2000 Hyundai Elantra GLS

How long have you owned your Elantra?

My first automobile was a 1995 Toyota truck, it was good for what it was, until the timing belt went on the truck. I was looking for a decent car with good gas mileage, and came across the Elantra. My limit was 5,000 on a decent car, I originally paid $3,000 dollars for it. It had alittle over 56,500 miles on it when I got her.

Is there anything special, unique, or different concerning the history of your Elantra?

The special thing I find differing about my Elantra is the history, which is a bit horendous. The pervious owner was in 2 accidents with it. The first one was being rear ended by an Accord, and the second was when a dear hit the driverside front quarter panel. After I took over ownership of the car, the only accident I had other then Evan being a tool and throwing a pop bottle on my hood was this past New Years Eve. Evan, my girlfriend Brenna, and myself were at an intersection and were rearended by a F150. I was the second car to get hit, the first being the rental Focus two guys were driving. I was suprised at how little damage was done for the impact. The car can withstand some beatings.

The other special thing I love about my car is I am one of a few with the J2 on a dominated XD board. And soon to come with the turbo, I will really be seperated from the rest of the crowd. Most peoeple look at the Elantra, especially the J2, and think it's a grandma's car, but that changed as soon as I found EXD. And let's be honest, how many turbocharged J2's do we see these days?

Honestly, what was your intention when you bought your Elantra?

When I bought my Elantra, I was looking for something that was strictly a good, reliable car. I was not looking for looks or speed, just something that would last me until the end of college. To this day, it has exceeded my expecations with everyhting, except the gas milage.

What was your intention after discovering EXD (or other Hyundai forums)?

After I did a search one day while I was bored at work. I found HP.com, Elantraclub.com, ElantraXD.com, my world opened up. I never thought there would of been such a vast knowledge of wealth from so many walks of life on a specific imported car. After a few weeks, I did my first mod, rims, and the rest has been a joyride ever since.

In one word describe the style of your Elantra.

Unique. I don't see many J2 Elantras in Pittsburgh. So when I will be rolling down the street in summer of 2006 with the turbo, I know I will be one of a few with something special. The Hyundai tuner aftermarket is a special thing, we don't have the huge following the Civic or other import cars have, so we have to use our creative minds to set ourselves apart. I think that is the most unique thing about any Elantra, including my own.

Who helped modify your Elantra?

Mostly all the handywork is done by myself when I have time away from school, work, and Brenna. My father has helped me a few times. But mostly it has been Evan and my mechanic that steer me in the right direction. Big props to them.

What do you like most about your Elantra?

I love the looks of it. Sure, its five years old and has close to 90,000 miles on it. But I still enjoy every single minute of it. When I have the time to give her a good detail and make her shine, it shows. Driving down the highway, and the look I get from people makes me know even though it is a Hyundai, I can still turn heads.

What do you like least about your Elantra?

The gas mileage. The car and I have been fighting this for almost a year now. The Elantra likes to do what it wants in this category. Sometimes I will get 28mpg around city and on highway, other times it will be 20mpg. It has been getting to me, but I hope to resolve the situation when I do the turbo install.

What modification is next for your Elantra?

Initially, my turbo will be next. Most members of EXD know what is going into it. After that will be my bodykit and rear disc swap from a junked RD Tiburon.

On a scale from 0-10, how would you rate your Elantra?

7. I rate myself alittle to harsh sometimes. But I feel it is a honest rating. I is a high milage car, has some dings and shows her age on occasion. But this year a good detail and buffing out will hopefully raise the score.

Most commonly, what do people say about your Elantra?

"Why do you spend so much money on an Elantra?". Mostly my respone includes why do you by ricer products, or why do you spend so much money on this or that. I think most people don't realize a car is the reflection of the driver.

Who is allowed to drive your Elantra?

Only myself since I am the only insured person on the car.

What is the most outrageous thing you have wanted to do to your car that you have not been able to do?

Manual transmission swap. If I had the funds and the sources to do the swap. It would of already been done.

What kind of car did you own (or drive) before your Elantra?

1995 Toyota Truck withb 210,000 miles before it died.

Realistically, what kind of car is next?

Another Hyundai, after graduation in July of 2006 I'm going to keep my eye out for a Accent with a blown motor to do a Beta II swap.
