I did a search and didnt come up with anything. If this is in the wrong section please move it.What grade of fuel do you use..Does not matter if it was before or after the massive increase in the price of gas.I myself use 93 octane.

why do you use 93 octane?there no need for it... lately i've been using 89 but there is no reason to be using 93 unless you're running boost or something of that sort...

93 all the time. i love the nitrous :D

I've ran 93 in all my cars.I swear is says in the owners manual that the xd2 has 10-1 compression.Thats the main reason I run that grade.Hell,it might free up a horsepower or 2

actually, ive heard running a higher octane than needed will decrease mpg and performance.

I had a friend in Australia who was alternating 3 fillups of regular 89 with 1 fillup of 93, because some stations have "special cleaning additives" going on. Anwyay, I got into that, not actually looking up things...anyway, long story short, I said something to my father in law about it, and he in his all knowing, slightly condescending voice said there was no need. I now run 89 octane all of the time. Besides the fact that it's too darn expensive to fill up with anything else.

I know you said you searched, but try again. This has been THOUROUGLY discussed about 18 times. If I weren't so lazy, I'd search for you, but it's late.

I use regular, there is no performance increase or anything to be found in the XD's by using a higher octane.

My bad Hyunelan2...I guess I just used too many words in the search.Sorry bout that

HAHAA i murder my car.

I use 87 on it when I'm short on cash. I alternate with 91 every 3 fill-ups.

We used to have 94 here until Sunoco got bought out by BP,and during the warmer months thay had 100 octane racing gas. That was like 3 years ago though and it was 3.15 a gallon back then, imagine what it would be today

Octane is the resistance to detonation. If your car doesn't detonate (ping) on 87 octane, then that is all you need. If it does ping, then you have to move up. Higher octane does NOT yeild higher performance unless you are pinging. This is because if the knock sensor sees that you are detonating, it will retard the timing in order to attempt to save the engine. So when you use the higher octane, it won't ping, and the computer won't retard the timing. So unless you are detonating, save your money and buy regular.

In California, premium gas is 91 octane. The three most common octanes here are 87, 89, and 91. It's rare to see anything higher than that, unless you were purchasing race fuel, and even those aren't common, unless you're at the track or something.

ricer is right. and a station with additives should have it in all grades not just higer grades.

So higher octane increases gas milage and horsepower lolololool!!!oneoneone

Maybe I'll head down to the sunoco down the street and put 104 octane in my car!!! lolololol.

-----

Actually, the owners manual says put 87 octane in.
And thats what I do.
It gives me the best horsepower and best mileage.

Just like my girlfriends galant. Owners manual says 91/93 octane, so that's what I put in. I have actually calculated it, and even though "super" gas is more expensive FROM THE PUMP....the mileage she gets with it compared to when she puts regular in it, makes the "super" CHEAPER.

Never would have thought of that, huh?

(and yes, there is a gas station in my county that has 104 "race" octane)

95 regularly, and 91 and 98 occasionally.
Listen, I get much better mileage from using 95, compared to regular, so I'll stick with it! When you're getting 40mpg, you don't complain!

Ok listen everyone....DO NOT USE ANYTHING BESIDES REGULAR Our cars are not high performance vehicles. I used to be stupid and put the middle one thinking it would be better for my car and I was wrong If you have Turbo or a supercharger or Nitrous, or any time of high-performance upgrade, ie: Headwork, cams etc. Then you can use high octane fuel. Using premiumm on our cars can run the risk of hurting your engine...Please don't do it guys....Ford, help me out here...

High octane gas carbons up the engine. The ECU was programmed to use 87 octane gas and nothing else. You can use high test, but it is not necessary unless you have a need to use it.

87 all the time, no exceptions. I have a stock Elantra. Only way you would need 91-93 octane is if you have a performance computer chip tuned for it or a turbo/supercharger otherwise it's a complete waste of money & will yield no extra performance. Just cost 20 cents a gallon more.....

robs02elantra

Yeah. 87 all the way. I just re-read my last post in this thread, and realized I said 89. I was prescribing to the thought that I would be helping out my car putting in higher octane, but in that conversation that I already mentioned with my father in law, he did mention that it's doing damage to an engine that is only meant to take 87.

Thanks for the warnings guys. It is so easy to follow along blindly to what the service stations say about taking their higher priced gas because it is better for your engine in every situation.

I have been taking the classes Hyundai offers the dealer service techs. This was discussed thoroughly in the engine class I took.

87 all the time, If you are dumb enough to use anything above you might as well get the www.powerchipgroup.com remapping (USD $390). It will give you about 12+ horsepower while using those higher grades. Don't waste your money and the supply of higher grade gas unless you are gonna put it to good use.

Cant use the power chip due to the fact that mostly what it does is advance the timing.Thats also why I have a cam sprocket sitting around too.All due to the cvvt

I use 87(regular) for the city drive. I put 91/93(whichever is the Premium) when I take the highway to Chicago from West Lafayette or the other way around.

Wouldn't it be better to use the high octance than regular on the highway?

ok... i didn't know there was page2 for this thread... lol
so forget about my post. I got the answer lol

I have to use 93 octane fuel because I have the Powerchip ECU. Lately I've been thinking about sending it back and having them take their chip out, cause I'm tired of these prices. not sure what I'll do yet.

I have a close friend that works on gas pumps around the Virginia Area....he as been through many training courses on fixing pumps, gas...etc. So I honestly asked him one day if there is a difference....he told me that mid grade is a mixture of 60% regular and like 100% super..something along those lines. He said it keeps your egine clean so u will not have to add fuel additives all the time. As far as super...he said thats for vets..high performance. But he also said if u do run low grade....put high grade in your car once a month for a cleaning.

He must have been working at a chevron station, they're the only gas station I know of that puts additives in their gasoline specifically to clean your engine no matter what grade you use.

The manual tells me to use 87 so I use Hyundai's recommendation. Screw paying more for gas than I have to. =)

i cant even believe this is going on...okay octane levels are based on the available oxygen the atmoshpere...around me (500 ft or so) we have 93 because there is more available oxygen to burn the fuel...octane rating also refers to the point inwhich it will dentonate...this being said....

unless you are high compression 11.0:1 or better...or turbo'd supercharged or use nitrous on every occasion you get...using 89 or better will only kill your gas mileage and give more money to big oil companies that already rule the world.

sh!t there are some places (in the mountians) 5000+ ft where you can get 85 octane and then that should be used...especially on the highway!

As I mentioned before, the Beta 2 engine carbons up real bad when you use high test. The ignition timing and ECU parameters are set for 87 octane gas. Using gas that has a higher octane won't make the engine run any better, unless you have the ECU programmed so it advances the ignition timing and the parameters for high test gas.

Conoco as well... same fuel additives, just different octane rating.

yes I saw that site already thats why I went with chevron for awhile, until gas prices rose, but will switch back now that everyone including chevron is $2.99/gallon.

You can also just use regular cheap 87 octane & once every couple months go get a $5 bottle of Chevron Techron from Wal-Mart. That's what I do. Just put it in before you re-fill your tank & run it close to empty again.

I also use Chevron's Techron cleaner. If you have a Costco nearby, you can get 4 bottles @ $9.99. They might have raised their prices since I haven't bought any in awhile, but it would still be cheaper than $5/bottle

I thought the 4 for $10 was a fuel system cleaner not the techron additive? the techron additive I always see is around $7 - $8 here.

I have used 87 exclusively since I bought my car...i put 94 in it once and all it did was get worse gas mileage and no extra performance. I also use Valvoline SynPower Fuel Injector Cleaner every 3k and Valvoline SynPower Complete Fuel System Cleaner every 12k. I have used the SynPower cleaners in every vehicle I have owned and it does a good job. It cleaned the dirty-*** injectors of my 1989 Daytona quite nicely!

Heh i'm using valvoline synpower synthetic oil in mine, but thats just to clean out the engine to get it ready for a real synthetic oil, royal purple specifically lol!
