Hello my fellow hyundai brothern. I would just like to toss in some audio suggestions. By now I'm sure you all have had it with takin the entire dash out just to get to the headunit. i brain-stormed and came up with this solution.

http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=3371&stc=1

You cant really see but along the top of the front cover there are two horizontal crevices on the left and right side. what i did was cut the that line with a jigsaw so i would be able to access my headunit without having to put the whole dman thing out.

and there you go, you can access the headunit without too much of the hassel.

The rears were a *****. you have to remove the side paneling of the back seats, so basiclly remove the entire back seat its just so much easier with it in the way. didnt take pictures of the dismantleing of the rear, was too frustrated. and to reach the back panel coverin your rear speakers you have to release the wool squares from the hooks they are so ingeniusly put on. dont be afraid to pull with some effort. its also glued on. but after you put the back cover, its not goin to feel the same. what i did (or still tryin to do) get about half an inch thick ply wood and cut the shape of the cover and use that instead. it'll help the rattle you'll get after you put in your nice speakers.
hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips SuspiciousJ,
I've tried to take out my rears to change them two times already and just haven't been able to remove the rear deck.
This tip really should help though, I've not heard of it before:
you have to release the wool squares from the hooks
If you can provide some more detail on this I'd appreciate it.

Nice job on the head unit install too!

dude, you cut your dash fascia? what's the big deal with just removing it? i've removed mine about 10 times... 4 screws and that's it. is it really worth seeing cut lines on your dash fascia? no offense to you, but i can't imagine that to look good at all. do you have more pics of it in place (closeups)?

It is criticism like this that makes people leave EXD. A simple "I wouldn't want to cut mine, but thanks for the tips" would have sufficed.

I wouldn't want to cut mine, but thanks for the tips.

As far as the rear deck is concerned there is no easy way to get to those speakers. I have a friend that is a professional car audio installer and he said you "might" be able to reverse the screws from the 6X9 from the bottom then tilt them out. You of course would have to then mount the new speakers from the bottom and fab some kind of bracket to hold them. I tried this method and couldn’t get it to work. I just removed the entire rear of the car to change the speakers out. It’s a good two hour job.

The biggest problem after removing the rear seats and molding is to find the four clips from the bottom of the rear deck that hold it in place and release them. There are four clips total. Two on each side (I think) near the trunk hinge and two next to the break light assembly. They all need to be released to pull the rear deck out. The problem is once you get them released and start pulling they want to re-attach themselves.

If you pull hard the rear deck will come out but you might loose a few plastic clips. They can easily be re-attached with some glue.

The instructions on the Hyundai site for removing the rear speakers are alright but they leave some details out.

So SPB doesn't seem alone out there, I completely agree with him. How often do you actually have to get behind the headunit anyway? It doesn't seem like it would have enough of an advantage to cut apart the dash fascia.

And I'm not being a jerk, just trying to put some perspective behind this before a bunch of new Elantra owners see the post and start cutting up their cars without knowing why.

^^Agreed.

I know it is somewhat of a pain to get behind the dash but in comparison to other vehicles that I have had it’s not really that hard.
I have read others that have complained about how hard the Elantra is to work on but all-in-all with the few mods that I have done it’s been very simple.
I have a few little marks on my steering column and my glove compartment that were accidentally made and I hate to see them. I can’t imagine what two cut marks in the dash fascia would look like.

i didn't mean to come off as being unconstructively critical, but like hyunelan said, i wonder if the advantage of quick and easy access to the HU outweighs the disadvantage of always seeing cut marks.

i'm wondering if another alternative would be to mount the HU in such a way so that it can slide out of its chassis? i'm thinking of the old removable HU's from the 90s before detachable plates became the method of choice to avert theft.

Some head units do come with keys that can be slid in each side to release the headunit from its mouting bracket.

If anyone wants to get to their deck so easily just get a tib. I can get to mine in 10 seconds. Wife's Elantra, different story. Takes maybe 30 seconds so I agree with all of those who say don't cut your dash to save 20 seconds. It's ony 4 screws for god's sake.

true, i was very reluctent with cutting it at first, but i was going at it with my headunit back and forth. redoing the wires, and just whatever to help improve the sound of my stereo. the cut isnt as bad as it sounds. i took my time with the jigsaw and the cut was fine and even. as for the rears. no easy way or short cut around it. the cushion on the rear seats got to be removed. there is a screw (i believe size 10 on a ratchet) that if used with an extension will be easy(ier) to reach without having to look but with the human sense of touch. after those cushions come off, you'll notice the rear panel on each end bein held down by more screws. after that just a lil bit of pullin and showin your car who makes the car payments that rear panel should come off. again the wooly material is hooked to a set of metal squares. if n e one would like pictures of all this. i would be more than happy to put them up. cuz we have got to take this honda/toyota/mazada made world and show them who really takes the wheel on the road. haha.
