Since my last thread went to crap... I was driving behind my school today (one of the exits) to go home and I guess it was just paved or someone dumped rocks? there was fingernail size ones flying up at my car while im doing 5 mph and other people are passing going to opposite way needless to say, theres 4-5 maybe 6 big rock chips on driver door and maybe other places (2-3 of them are down to metal).

I need help on this, bodyshop would probably charge a ton, tell me everything I need and what I need todo thanks.

DO NOT WETSAND THE PAINT!!! This is only for experts in painting and body repairs. I would not even do it on our cars anyway. The paint is too thin to begin with. I know how to do it, but even I won't try it on our cars.

Get the paint from the dealer and dab it on the spots, let it dry then wax the areas.

i did that for a couple of small chips but more often than not the paint won't match even though it IS genuine hyundai touch up paint i got from a dealer. the difference becomes much more obvious when the chipped area is bigger than one tenth of a fingernail. so i don't know what do do about that. better than bare metal so i touched up all my chips but doesn't look that great.

The paint does match, but it is the surface is not what the same as when the paint was originally applied. The more coats you put on, the darker it will be, and with reds, which are transparent, you need to apply more for coverage anyway because the chip will show through easier.

When the car was painted, the surface was a light grey to white, and the color shot over that. If more color is added, it will appear darker.

I havea bunch of chips too, what I have done is get masking tape and tape around the chipped area. Touch up paint lightly. then rubbing compound to smooth it a little. Then more touch up paint. Continue till you get a layer filled in the chip to equal the rest of the car. I'm currently working on this and it looks fairly decent. Once finished I'll get a buffing machine and use rubbing compound on the chipped area and then wax the whole car. It should blend ok but never perfect, but it's not costing me several hundred dollars.

so in this order

1- wash car

2- 3M Masking Tape around chips (how close.. exact I imagine? thats gonna be a bit hard todo)

3- fill in chips with touch up paint lightly

4- use 3M Rubbing Compound (let dry and rub off)

5- use touh up paint again

6- use 3M rubbing again

7- wash car...

something like that? also question how much time do you let it sit before compounding the newly touched up area? wouldnt that take it right off?

You need to let the touchup dry at least 3 days before rubbing it, or it will rub off.

I believe the hyundai touch up pen is BASE/CLEARCOAT all in one, while say the pens from paintscratch.com come with base and then a seperate clearcoat.. which should I go with?

edit: just talked to my hyundia dealer its a straight red color in a finger nail bottle basicaly is what he said..

The paint is a acrylic single stage paint. It has the clear built into it.

if you dont know what wet sanding is, dont ever attempt it. very bad things happen when people wet sand and have no idea how to do it. i dont even wet sand, and ive been doing this kind of work for about 10 yrs now.

just like the others said. get some touch up paint either the pen or bottle type. only fill in the chip a little bit at a time. then wax the area.

Just a website with lots of detailing info link (http://www.web-cars.com/detail/touchup.php) and a source for genuine paint and other touch up suppliesPaintScratch (http://paintscratch.com/cgi-bin/log_affiliate.cgi?AFFIL=1049)
Make sure you let the touch up paint dry for a couple of days before sealing it in with wax.
