View Full Version : Fuel Tuner NA testing ....

I have been running my fuel tuner about 2 points leaner than stock at all rpms.

I did this with the purpose of experimenting with how the ecu "compensates" for lean conditions with NA driving.

Here is what I have found so far...

Total mileage tested so far, 150 miles.
Half a tank of regular low grade fuel.
Mostly 90% city driving.

#1. The exhaust has a little burble when decelerating in gear. (this is normal for lean running engines), and it does not make the burble when the fuel settings are in the stock positions.

#2. The throttle response is more " crisp " when on the leaner settings.

#3. mid-range and top end power seem un-affected (but last years dyno show that there is power to be had by running slightly leaner than the stock settings (at sea level for me).)

Anyway, thats it... Un-interesting but the only thing I can tell is that the ecu reverts to the lean settings when NOT under load such as when I let off the gas in gear ,, it makes the burbling sound which is really an exhaust system backfire due to running leaner than usual... ( I know this to be the case because i've read about it + when I had a clogged up carb on my old honda 2 cylinder cruiser it did the same thing ) ...

Ever since I upgraded my exhaust from stock, I have always gotten that "burble" sound once I let off the gas, and you would have to be deaf to not hear it when drop gears to decelerate. I have never messed around with fuel tuning in the elantra, so as far as I know my ecu has always been at normal stock conditions. Is this normal? Or should I technically not be hearing that burble? If anything, according to your initial findings, I have nothing to worry about.

I have a safc2 (sitting in a box) that I don't plan to install unless I do the whole turbo kit...

I just have the split second arc-1 fuel tuner in there like I've always had.

So let's say a car with my mods...which you have a good idea what they are since you are my mechanic...lol. Do you think I'd benefit at all using an SAFC?? Or is it just applicable with FI??

I think you can see that I picked up a little horsepower (check the time slip section) when I pulled out some fuel.

But you adjusted the SAFC as well as resetting the ECU.. Do you think that you had a faster time maybe just because you reset it or was the ECU reset on the 1st run as well??

Aren't those tuning figures off a V6 tibby though, last time I checked our cutoff point was just shy of 6500. Oh well, I will say that I am -5% at 1000 and it gradually goes up to -8% at 6000 for hi throttle settings. For low throttle I am -5% all the time.

I remember awhile back I was fooling around with msd box and my safc.. I ran -10 till about 4500 and -5 till 6500 and advanced the timing alittle I noticed a little more torque on the low end and alittle more power high end.. (auto) I gotta fool around with it more when I get back.
