To shift it to Neutral, rev the engine to 4000 rpms, then quickly let off the gas and shift to drive and floor it for a better launch?
destroys your transmission

well, since you want to **** up your engine (obviously), why let off the gas and throw it into gear...just put it in neutral, rev it to about 5k, and when its there, drop it into drive. youll get mad tire smoke yo!

wow and his/her car is an 05 brand new.. parents bought it!!!!!!!!!!!1

Dropping from nuetral to drive in an automatic will destroy your transmission. Good luck on getting Hyundai to replace it if you do destroy it.

The second you drop it in drive, you tear up all forward gears because the tranny is designed to grab the next higher gear while in the lower gear.

Only for MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS! Right now seems appropriate the words of Carlos Mencia: "DEE DEE DEE"

You might see it done on top fuel dragsters or whatever (or maybe not) but I saw a show where they said they rebuild the transmission after every run, so to them, who cares, as long as it gets them to the line the fastest.
For everyone else, if you have the $$ to rebuild your transmission every week, do what the heck you want. I hope mine outlasts the car.

If you're drag racing at the track in an automatic, you'd be better off powerbraking. To do that, you'd keep your left foot on the brake and rev the engine to 3 or 4K in while the car's in drive. You'll be holding the car still with the brakes applied, but the tranny will be slipping and ready to 'light up' the tires (you wouldn't want to hold it too long or you could do some damage). Then let off the brake & floor it. This can be pretty effective for a quicker start. It can cause some wear & tear as well... but it's not nearly as bad on the transmission as dumping it into drive from neutral.

i was being HIGHLY sarcastic. i remember some idiots in high school who ruined cars in the parking lot by doing it.

We did that in the used cars at my old dealership. We'd spray the asphalt down with some water and nuetral drop them to an inch of their life!
Of course this was after their 100 point inspection that made sure the cars were in great shape :)
Brad
pull the e-brake all the way and gun it, way todo a real nice burn out then let off the ebrake and there you go good launch.. you wont have brakes after awhile though Iv only done it 1 time because I dont want to break it

actually, the " right " way to do a neutral drop is to rev the engine until you hear the rev limiter slow it down (a little pop pop sound) and keep the gas pedal down ALL the way and THEN slam the shifter into "D" !!
VOILA !!! Magic !!!!

Neutral drops, I think we've all been there and done that but perhaps he hasn't yet, but I think that everyone really expressed that it's bad. I did a neutral drop in my old old car when it had the gearing on the steering wheel...oh that's more fun! lol Yes it'll really screw up your tranny...think of the alternate suggestions that have been expressed instead.

Some guys who I just started to watch race their stocks did that, figured I would ask before I tried. Thanks!

Follow the advice of those who say "Don't do it!" Neutral drops have a tendency to snap the shaft of the torque converter and spread bits and pieces of metal throughout your tranny. A rebuild is not an option after a few neutral drops, you might not even get a "core" deposit out a tranny in that condition.

I actually did this on my '95 before I did the tranny swap. Granted the car was 9 years old at the time and in pretty bad shape, but after about 15 neutral drops the tranny gave up and when I opened it, burnt fluid and metal shavings filled the landscape.
So, YES it is very bad indeed and if you do it again my evil monkey will be in the back seat every time you drive your elantra.

I had a freind with a 91 civic wagon. We did ... 100? Drops on it and it was ok. It only had like 50hp.... so that might have saved it from damage. That and ****ty tires.

Neutral drops are dumb. Powerbraking is where it's at.

If sombody sells a tranny brake for this car that would work best for what you want to do or you know a local shop that can figure it out on a extra Trannsmission. A Tranny brake is a modifed valve body that allow you to put the transmission in drive and reverse at the same time. that will not hurt it as much as a neutral drop. People do it all the time at the strip with turbo 350 and 400s and powerglides.

The tranny brake also requires the tranny to have upgraded clutch packs and a shift kit as well. The driveshafts also take a beating when you do this.

I've an '04 Auto (my wifes). When I've taken it to the track, I've tried two approaches:
1) Press the brake with the left foot and rev to 3200 rpm approx. I noticed though that there was a hesitation after releasing the brake and mashing the gas.
2) Hold the brake with the left foot, while hovering your right foot over the gas, but not touching it. When that last yellow light lights up, lift your left foot and mash the gas with your right. This method really works, no hesitation, and even squealing your tires a little. I've done this, though practice has made perfect for timing, effectively lowering reaction times to less than a .050 tenth away from the .500 mark.
Approach # 2 will not hurt your vehicle, but like in a Manual where the clutch goes bad, you will eventually wear away the torque converter, requiring replacement.
If you change the transmission fluid out with some Redline stuff, and do a drain/fill on it once a year, you really shouldn't have any problems.
FordFaster might be right with the whole Rev it all the way up till you hear a pop then drop, BUT I WOULDN"T DO IT!!!!!
