Eventually you'll get used to it. :)
I barely notice mine anymore, but get comments regarding how loud it is occasionally.

hah. loudness is something you will have to get used to if you wanna squeeze some power outta your xd. wait until you get headers and exhaust on (if you plan on getting them, that is)... then you can say it's pretty loud. lol.

How much improvement does headers give?
can they be put on with the stock piping after that?
I have a magnaflow on it now

if your complaining about a CAI your gonna hate headers, the car will be SOO loud. I dont think you will be able to deal if a CAI pisses you off.
headers will give you a solid 7 whp or so depending on brand and what youve done to the car.
yes you can use stock piping after the header.

From what I hear Turbo-chargers work pretty well as mufflers.

You may be able to "tune" the intake a bit by shortening the intake pipe, if you've got room. I did that on mine and now, except for the hissing-vacuum sound when I first start it up and the WOT/high RPM noise, it's not bad.
Of course, mine's in the engine compartment next to the battery, so it sounds quieter.
