I bought an OEM rear spoiler for my 05 GLS Hatch. The price of the item seemed reasonable (@ $ 151 and change painted in the car's color) but their shipping charges are unfair. They claimed the item weighed 45 lbs and charged me $ 32.98 for UPS ground from Seattle to Florida.
When I tracked the package in the UPS system, UPS correctly stated it only weighs 8 lbs, which is only slightly more than the actual weight.

I complained with an e-mail to Hyundai parts Online about the exorbitant shipping charges, and all they had to offer as an excuse was that the package was oversized.
Hogwash!! Do you call a box measuring 48" X 8"X8" and weighing about 6 lbs oversized?

I agree... shipping companies use what's known as minimum density method... so for oversized items, there's a minimum weight they charge... so you could ship a sock in a 4'x1'x1' box and they'll charge you for a 20lb item or whatever. $33 for a spoiler cross country is pretty cheap, considering my wife shipped some craft stamps in a 8.5x11 padded envelope and it cost $10 to go cross country.

well considering I shipped a 50 Pound, 19" CRT monitor for 55 dollars and the box was 25"x25" I say you might have got the shaft.

Less than $200 for a painted OEM spoiler is a deal.

It just sucks because you didn't know about it. Did you have them give you a shipping estimate first?

i dont think its bad...if they used UPS/FedEX, or DHL, i can see that. ive shipped 60ln coilovers for 45$ and 27lb clutch kit for <20 thru USPS

It is oversized and they have great prices there. Shipping is generally 10% of the purchase price.

My springs that i ordered weighed like 26-27 and i was charged almost 30 bucks for ups ground,it depends on the sizes of the boxes and not just on the weight alone

I did not request an estimate on shipping, since I expected the package to weigh 45 lbs as they stated in the online order process.

What irked me was that UPS correctly declared only 8lbs weight. And what kind of handling charges you would have if the box had already been packaged in Korea with the Hyundai colors on it? All they did was to cover the original label with another with my address on it.

Finally, for $33 I would have expected at least 2d day air delivery, not shipping on a slow boat from China. Sorry, I still think I will file a complaint to the Better Business Bureau.

sportiva, before you go making a fool of yourself to the BBB, you should do a little research on shipping.

A spoiler gets oversize charges. There is no way around that. Go to the UPS store with the box and try and mail it to me at zip code 17110. See what price they charge you.

I could see if the shipping label said $8 and you got charged $33, as that kind of crap happens on eBay all the time. But if UPS charged them that much to ship, there's nothing they can do about that.

File your charges against that company, and you'll get laughed at for complaining about Hyundai Parts Online when the problem was shipping.

File your charges against UPS, and you'll be laughed at when they see what it was you were trying to get shipped.

I drove 240 miles round trip to pick up a part for my car to save on shipping & it cost me about $ 40.00 in gas in the car I drove, It still would have been $ 27.00 in the Elantra & that does not include food, nor wear & tear on the car.

i really think youre making a mountain out of a mole hill. just like someone said, you got an OEM PAINTED spoiler for 180$. my spoiler was 80 shipped, and i got a ****ty shop (which rhymes with "maaco" [dont go there]) to paint it for 50$. i could have spent 100$+ to get it painted at the dealer and would still think i got a hell of a deal

hmmm, most companies like "cubing" packages: UPS does that. That's why I don't like them that much. FedEx doesn't do it yet. Canpar does. Yes, your package, cubed, is worth that much. You can also say it is "oversized", shich has a relation with that. Companies have to make profit somehow. And, if UPS had 8lbs written on their papers, well, it means that hyundaiparts lied to you, gave you a wrong weight, but wrote the right one down for the ups numbers.

Still, it would cost WAY more to ship a 45$ box. So, you got maybe 1/8th owned, but not totally :)

And, like someone pointed out, handling is part of the shipping charges. I mean, the person who handles your product is paid to do so, you shouldn't forget that. Negative equity doesn't exist in business talk.

I work in shipping, so I know what I am talking about.

that price for shipping is good.. seeing as how a cold air intake is about 1/4 of the weight and costs $25 to ship from ebay. and like evan said.. its prepainted for you.. you've got a pretty good paint job on there that should last at least 5 yrs or so compared to maaco's 8 months

The USPS has an over size threshold of 70'in girth (LXHXW). In my case the girth would be 64", so it would not be oversize by the USPS; so, why would it be for UPS?
The reality here, as you all know, is that extra handling charges are being disguised as shipping, and customer is not to know that.
In my book that is considered an unfair business practice.
So the answer is: Let the customers know what the shipping and handling charges are, separately, and let them decide whether or not it's worth buying.
I have often declined a purchase online simply because these charges were clearly disproportionate to the value and weight of the item.
Case in point: I own two classic Italian motorcycles, and sometimes I have to wait for my annual trip to Italy to buy some parts at a reasonable prices.

I would advise caution in using USPS rules on a UPS shipment. UPS overzise rules may be found here:

http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/prepare/oversize.html

for your 48x8x8 package:

Your length = 48"
Your Girth = 32" (8* + 8" + 8" + 8")

Your combined length and girth = 80". If there is a very minor measureing error, or miscalculation, it will put your package over the 84" threshold for OS1 oversized shipment.

LoL I know, hey, ya gotta make $ to mod your car :D

Oh, and, now that I think of it, box could not be oversize, I was thinking about international shipping at UPS... Then again we use Canpar here for national delivery so, sorry, I am not aware of the procedures that UPS uses. We recently just switched to FedEx for international delivery also... They offer incredible prices, and charge by the skid, not the box, which makes the package sizes useless, therefore we can ship anything, anyway we want to :)

Moral of the story: FedEx ***> UPS.

Also, UPS seems to charge 50% more on border charges than FedEx...

Blah. /offtopic

Basically there isn't a lot you can do about it, they will most probably refuse to give some of your money back because:

They know you will not be a return customer, so, if you're not satisfied anyways, they are better off with more of your money than less. That's why, in terms of business logistics, they will give you a credit on your next purchase so you won't have a choice but to go back there yo make your purchase...

I have had a few conversations with Bob, the new parts manager of HyundaiPartsonline. This guy so far has been on the up and up. He really wants to do the right thing and make this site work well. There is no question that the prices paid for the items themselves are better than you can get anywhere (unless you have some sort of IN with a dealership) I have ordered twice from them and have been very satisfied both times. My shipping charges have been exactly as they said.

Please support this site with orders. I'm sure Bob charged you based on what he was charged.
