View Full Version : how tough are our engines?

i see people here with turbos, superchargers, nitrous, etc. on their cars, and it makes me cringe because we dont exactly have vtec's or anything...hyundai's have always struck me as the kind of car that someone in their mid-to late 20's would drive as a beater...and it always came across that they were built just like that...enlighten me please!!! i love my 05 GT to death but damnit i want nitrous and various other modifications to make me go vroom and i just think my engine is built like a pre-pubesent little girl...make me change my mind!

UM:

V-tec doesnt really have anything to do with how tough your engine is.

Our engines are nice and tough because of the materials they are made out of. They also have 10.0:1 compression, which takes mild boost/Nos really nicely.

Go, put nitrous on it, I think the most anybody has gotten for our engines with STOCK internals was 100hp shot without problems. 2lou2k2 runs 80 shot and wildfire runs 90 shot. Go for it. Wet kit.

What your saying depends on alot of things. Such as transmission type, how much money you have and are willing to spend, mileage on the engine, etc.
There have been I4 beta1 and beta2's that have seend over 200+ horsepower. 2loud2k2xd was running an 80 shot of nitrous on his auto hatchnback XD but didnt want to strain it because then stock tranny in the automatic for can only handle about 200whp to the wheels. On the other hand if you have a manual engine you can easily run 250+ whp. Other people will chime in on this that have more knowledge then I can ever. Hopefully FordFasterr and DMdicks will chime in for you.

Our engine is capable of around 664 whp if you go crazy enough...

Of course the more power you go for the more you have to upgrade. Building a 664 whp XD could easily be a $30K+ endeavor even if you have mad skills. But at least you know this little motor has potential.

i was just under the impression that vtec's are much more durable because many people say that they're "bullet-proof" and i've seen some with like 800 hp...but thats besides the point because i do not have a HONDA (experience that i've had with them is on the downside anyway, but it was a u-lev engine)...i stopped in a local performance shop and the guy told me i would be better off without nitrous, and that it would probably burn my o-rings to **** after a while of shooting...BTW my engine has like 7k on it and it's an 05 auto...i just think that people want to tell me bad **** because they dont think hyundai's deserve those kind of mod's...it sucks that biased people have to push personal opinions like that

your automatic can be built to handle 300 whp if you log on to www.levelten.com i have an auto and it would be a round 1500 to get mine beefed up..they might even be able to make it handle more than 300

i personally believe this little engine that we have can handle quite a good amount of power i mean i trust the engine and if you treat it nice and whatever mods you do to it are done properly it'll handle it just fine

For the record, the "v-tech" only deals with the cam timing and lift. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything below the valve. To be honest, the longest lasting Acura's I see are usually the older non-vtec integras and legends.

But as for our engines, they are tough and the rest of the car is just as tough. I used to see them well over 100k on the older beta's and ran like champs.

how long do you think our xd and xd2 engines will last? maybe 200k? i'm hoping that much...this is w/o mods of course...and how long with say nitrous hooked up at 75 shot?

it depends what you mean by ''last''. would you be replacing a piston if it warps? would you replace the head? would you replace the block?

un-modded, and lasting with replacing nothing major (like you listed), and with nitrous, without replacing anything you listed

I had a 1999 Elantra and bought it with 150,000 on it, I sold it to my Uncle who drives it everyday to work, it currently has 232,000 and it still runs like the day I bought it. I wouldnt doubt if our cars could go farther with maitanance kept up and car kept in good running order.

If I remember correctly, Hyundai built the Beta I and II engines to run 180K miles before they need a major repair / overhaul. That doesn't mean that you could get more or less milage depending on how you treat the engine.

Obviously you'll be straining the engine more by adding nitrous / turbo / supercharging and lessening the car's reliability.

The question is: Are you willing to spend $1 to $4K, give up some reliability and give up the 10/100 warranty for more power?

i use an 80 shot all the time, well going on my 3rd bottle. i went thru 2 bottles before. i now have 86,000 miles on the car and it still runs and pulls strong. i also installed a trans cooler to keep trans temps down (auto). i still get 26mpg city and over 31mpg hwy. and there is not a day that goes by that i dont get the rpm's over 5000. i also change oil at 3000 miles w/ mobile1 sysnthtic.

i would say go for the nitrous. its cheaper than installing the t/c or s/c. but the bottle refills do add up (3.50@lb). i love the extra power when someone rolls up and messes with me. they see the crooked H when i fly past them. :D

i also read somewhere (i dont remember where tho) about a betaII crate motor. race ready motor built up. i wish i remembered where i read it, i might have bought one (3-4000.00 for the motor tho).

dont go through a bottle a day... you dont have to shoot your n2o everywhere you go, save it to show off with your friends or, like 2loud2k2xd said, when you wanna show some ricer punks who have added only a cool air intake to the engine up.

if anythign i would say our motors are stronger than a honda. most mildly built hondas ive seen only last for about 20,000 miles. biggest thing being the blocks
we have an iron block that is pretty much solid, where as hondas have aluminum blocks with floating cylinders. ill get some pictures since i have both blocks sitting in my garage, incase that doesnt make sense.
i plan on running mine to 100,000 before i crack it open and do what i want to it
30,000 to go and hardly ever take it easy on my car
p.s.
f*ck vtec

**** vtec indeed. I quite frequently have to add the word torque to Hondy fanboi's dictionaries. They may make as much horsepower as us, but are generally 25 if not more ft/lbs below us on torque which gives us a definite advantage.

Having owned an Integra before my Avante, I would choose the Avante hands down, despite it being a heavier car. I thought I loved my Integra, but the crooked H really got me hooked with this car.

here are some of my dyno numbers from the other week.

On Beta II I would only throw 200-220 at it before I would replace certain things internally to reach a higher goal. I have been running a 90 shot for awhile I started out at 60.. And the only the car has been holding up fine so far.. Only thing I would recommend with a nitrous set up would me new plugs/Wires and Msd. I noticed a bit of differance before and after when I installed Msd. Seemed like the power was stronger coming out and pulled longer.. But yes I think the engine itself is really strong it will take a beating :0 to a certain point ;)
