Ask 2loud about alt upgrades, however it sounds like your alt is going bad, not because its not putting out enough juice.

i (heard) somewhere that hyundai is upgrading all older alts because they dont charge enough (recall). dont quote me on that tho. i still have to call the dealership and find out for sure. i have done some extensive searching on alts for our cars. the closest match ive found is a mitsubishi alt. for what year and car i dont know. i have a model # somewhere, but it will take me forever to dig it up on this site. its buried in a few h/o alt threads from a while ago. i know our alts are a mando unit with 80 amp charging. there are h/o alts but they are pricy (699.00 for a 160 amp). i would try a junk yard or call the dealership and say i read somewhere that there is a recall on our alts. and see what the svc writer says.

also, the alt will not really charge above 12.5v at idle, it charges more at a bit more higher rpm's. check all the power connections and grounds. or you could also have the alt tested and see if it truely is the alt.

I kinda killed the battery awhile back when some of my friends were rocking to a parking lot party, i always knew the battery would die. I have an Optima in the car now, its better but everything dims down when the car is at idle, even with all accessories turned off. And when I speed the rpms up, it charges back at 14+ volts..I believe my alternator is on the way out tho.

I did read about those 160amp alternators when I did a search on the forum but dont want to pay that crazy 699 price. I know the newer accents and elantras have the 90 amp one, so i want to upgrade, without paying brand new for an alternator.
I found some on ebay, but not sure if it will be worthwhile yet.
Its about minimum 60bucks to rebuilt mine....and also depending on what needs to be replaced, could be just the brushes ...or more....
