What is it? Is there a group of manics out there whose job it is, is to ding your car when it's brand new? Is it envy, blinded by the cleanmachine hypmotizement, or just plain stupidity? Like moths to a flame.

During one month of ownership, my '05 has been dinged twice. One, a door ding on the rear driver's side quarter panel, leaving evidence of a white paint vehicle, and Two, a shopping cart forcefully pushed leaving a deeper dimple on the passenger side front bumper. ****!! I just cleaned and waxed it yesterday. What it is? Of course, nobody was hittin' n the '94 Sentra cuz it looked like ****.

this is why I kee peoples car if they ding mine. i work in a retail shop with horibble parking, but i drive around for about 10 minutes if i have to looking for an end spot. if you go in at an angle, with the rear further out than the front, people wont pull in as close. or just park far away.

Well, they usually don't hang around if they've dinged me. What if you're keying an innocent person's car? Karma, dude.

Yea, keying is never justified. After having my car keyed for no reason ($1200 damage, less than 1 year old) if I ever see anyone keying any car, for any reason - I'm gonna stuff them up their tailpipe.

Moved to flame section as this does not really have anything to do with keeping the appearance of the vehicle up.

if you don't want your car dinged, park in the far end of the lot, or don't dive it..... 'cause people are stupid, and unfortunatly it's against the law to kill people for just being idiots....

if I see someone taking up 2 spaces close to the store, business, etc, I try to park really close to the ASSHOLE... just to piss them off..... I HATE people that do that!

I noticed a new ding in my driver's side rear door yesterday. It's funny, because I have never in my life dinged or scratched anyone elses car. And yet my car has at least a couple dings in it obviously caused by someone's car door. It must either be that they're clumsy AND irresponsible (for not leaving a note for insurance), or they did it on purpose. That's just not cool.

Not to defend assholes, because I hate door dings too, but I don't know if the thought of leaving an insurance note would ever cross my mind. Not that I'm an arrogant a-hole, but I don't really think that's something insurance companies would even cover.

That's like expecting my car insurance to pay for damage from me hitting a foul-ball into the parking lot at the park. Sure, it's my liability, but my car insurance company has nothing to do with it. If their car wasn't in motion, I don't think the insuance company will say it has anything to do with them, just because the door was opened into something.

dude, that is so uncool. that is majorly wrong. if i see someone taking up two spots, they're going to get a very unpleasant surprise when they come back to their car...

I don't know, I'd tend to think that they would cover it...

Hmm... there should be at least 1 person here in the insurance industry, or at least someone who knows.

It would be interesting to find out.

Yea, and taking up 2 spaces = me being a jerk to you... and if I were in one of my old cars, I would park over the line 6" away from you.

If someone has keyed your door, you can file it with your insurance as a comprehensive claim, because it's an act of vandalism. If the damage done in that case is under a certain dollar threshold (depends on the insurance company) it usually won't affect your insurance premium.

If the door or fender has been dinged, even if standing still, it's considered an accident, which makes it a collision claim. If the person who dinged you left a note, they're doing you a favor because you can file it as a not at fault accident, and in many cases, it won't affect your insurance premium.

No-Fault accidents are only applicable in 12 states (& DC) though:
DC, FL, HI, KS, KY, Mass, MI, MN, NJ, NY, ND, PA, UT.

For the rest of us, someone has to be at fault for something to happen. right?

I think you're thinking of what is often called "no fault" insurance. All that means is that in those states, you go to your own insurance company first to have them pay for your troubles. But, in those cases we're talking about your injuries, not the damage to your car...except for MI where no matter who's at fault, your own car insurance pays for damage to your vehicle (if you have that kind of coverage of course, ie:comp & collision). And even in those no fault states, there's a dollar limit (except for MI) on what your insurance will pay for your injuries, and after that limit is reached, if it's not enough, you can sue the at fault party.

In any accident, there has to be fault assigned, by definition. Sometimes it's all one parties fault, sometimes the liability is split between several people. Like when you're both backing out of your parking spots in a parking lot and lock bumpers. That's usually 50/50 at fault.
