I want to change the lights in my interior to blue. What type of bulbs does the headunit have? I know Jupman took his apart but he replaced them with LEDs i dont want to go that route. So anyone know what type of bulbs they are?

The factory 2001-2003 HU used LED soldered onto the face panel circuit board -- they weren't bulbs.

I'd recommend getting ahold of one of the Kenwood / Hyundai CD HU -- you can choose any color you want then from the "colorshock" display.

what stock headunit exactly??? if this is the one http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2013 then i'm pretty sure you're wrong. i took mine apart as well a while back to attempt this conversion and saw only 1 LED for eject button. the rest were small bulbs the same size as the one for the ashtray and ignition ring i think.

Huh... maybe there was more than one model of HU, or perhaps I'm confused... :(

well either way you'd have to take it apart to do whatever you're planning on doing. so you might as well to it now. i can't remember if the stock bulbs were painted green or had green condoms (defusers) on them. if that's the case you can try buying blue ones. also i can't remember if all the buttons had green tint stuck to them from behind. either way. this is a lot like the HVAC conversion. the easy way is to replace/repaint/recover the stock bulbs but that also will give you the worst results. if you want true bright blue colors you have to go with LEDs and this one is harder to do than HVAC IMHO. so if you aren't too comfortable working with electronics it's a relatively cheap and easier solution to just get a new headunit that matches your color scheme. plus stock units aren't all that good anyway and the laser has been known to go bad rather fast.
