Here's a good price for HIDs. Free shipping for this month, too.

I told my brother and he's now getting them for his 97 eclipse. I'm so tempted to get them for my 98 sentra but I'm trying not to blow money on the daily driver.

I've been wanting HID's for a really long time now. Everytime I surf HIDPlanet.com, they always talk smack about HID kits and always recommend a retro. I'm not sure why exactly they even have an HID kit forum when they always persuade you from it. A lot of them seem to know what they're talking about and seem to speak from experience, usually starting off with HID kits, and later regretting they didn't do a retro in the first place.

I also hate doing a mod twice. How hard do you guys think it would be to do a retro yourself?

What's a retro?

an HID retrofit is when you install projectors into your headlight housing in order to use an actual OEM HID bulb such as D2S bulb with OEM ballasts.

Because our cars did not come from the factory with HID, when you install an HID kit like the one being discussed here, the beam pattern gets all screwed up and you have light bouncing everywhere, which causes glare for other drivers, and also causes your HID system to not be as effective as it should be.

Also, a lot of people don't realize that the higher in Kelvins you go, the less light output you'll get. OEM systems use between 4100-4300K. One of the reasons why people love the look of HID's is for that blue/purplish look or that twinkle that you see when you see a beamer/audi. etc. People think they can reproduce that color and twinkle by buying 8000K, 10000K, even 12000K HID kits but what they don't realize is that it's not the color of the bulb that produces that effect, it's the optics in the projectors.

I only know of one person so far that has an HID retro on his Elantra. I think his screen name was something like DJHellfire

Lol but everyone wanted to spend there money on other things instead of spending 275 or what ever I spent to convert my lights was more money then what anyone wanted to spend on just lights when they could get a cat back or springs. I did a group buy thing if you do a search for great kits great ebayer pretty easy install just don’t do fog lights it’s not worth the hassle.

I did low beams and fog lights 12k(purple lights you can make them out in my sig pic they are very very bright I normally don’t turn the fog lights on also you can’t turn them on and off and on and off so no quick running around at night or the bulbs won’t come on or only one will. They need time to cool down or something haven’t bothered with checking into it. I do have an aftermarket radio in 2 amps head unit and all new speakers and wires and I do hear a slight pop in the radio when I turn them on but nothing after that. For the low beam install basic hand tools and a auger/hole saw bit and a tube of silicone and your done an hour tops you get to keep all your factory wiring so going back to stock is easy and the only part you have to replace is the little black caps that cover the back of the headlights. There is no for off-road use only printed on it yes installing them is against the law so if you have strict car inspections in your area you may fail or have to revert back to stock to get it to pass. With the purple and blue lights when they first turn on are real blue and purple so you have to use common sense and try and turn them on when no cops or stuff are around even if they don’t car if there off-road use only they could be a jerk if you have other work done to your car saying that the lights are illegal and give you a fix it ticket for them that’s the only time I have been pulled over for it and I believe elantra2.001 also got pulled over for the same thing.

Another thing is that you have to bump from a 35amp fuse to a 45 I don’t think there would be much of a problem with the factory wiring handling this but haven’t had one as of yet but it will eat up the stock 35’s like mine did at the meet if I drive for over a few hours with them 2+ it will eat a 35amp fuse.

http://stores.ebay.com/timerivers is who I used you just want the universal kit if you need more info pm or hit me on IM.

Why would you want to bump up the fuse size? The wire has to hold the amperage rating, too. That could pose a fire hazard. I don't have any of the problems you listed. Maybe it's the brand you have?

It could be the kit wouldn’t be the first time. Most of the time I don’t have problems with the kit but if I don’t give it 10-15 min sometimes all the lights won’t come on. I have 2 hid kits on my car low beams and fog lights. The reason I got for the bigger fuse I checked it’s only 40 not 45 so 5 amps more hardly would do anything to the wiring… but was because it requires a bit of extra juice to fire them off I ran with a 35amp fuse for a while and notice I had almost no problems with lights not coming on after being turned on and off after I bumped up.

I did the test on my dads benz turning them on for a while turning them off for a min and cutting them back on and it did the same thing my kit did only one of the headlights came on after turning them off for about 10 min they both came right back on. Maybe it has something to do with the hardware quite a few companies make kits.

I don’t know what else you have on your electrical system as well but I have 2 pretty big amps one not on a cap the other on one plus some inside cathodes so I drain my electrical system pretty hard at night when they are on.

Yes, and I moved it for you. You should be set, provided it was approved by SuperGLS.

SO, from what I gather if I wanted to do Hi's and Low's I would need two sets or a set of blues from Ebay?

BlackElantraGT

If you wanted to change both your hi's and low's in your elantra, then yes you would need 2 sets of HID to accomplish that in the XD.

Some cars have hi's/low's built into one bulb. Since our cars uses H7 for low and H1 for High, if you were to install only an HID kit for your main low's, you would still have your high's.

It's pointless to install HID's in your high's because you can't drive with them constantly on. And the few times that you'll actually use your high beams, the stock H1 bulb with your new HID low's would be more than sufficient.

I am seriously thinking about this buy. My buddy installed a set of 8000k into his Mazda MP5-T and it looked fawkin awesome, even if the housing wasnt designed for it. Actually if I just aimed my headlights for my drop I might be ok, but im also sick of blowing bulbs.

Get an HID kit. You won't regret it. Also, if you blow a bulb (which I doubt) with an HID kit, you at least have a warranty that will get it replaced for free.
