i did it. it's a bulb like in HVAC. i replaced it with a red LED. can't remember exactly how to open the housing but i think the main part wraps around U shape style against the top. just pry it carefully with a small screwdriver. let's see if i can find a picture
EDIT:
no picture of the housing taken out but here's the end result

I replaced mine with Blue Leds. I just pulled out the factory bulb and soldered in a blue LED in its place. The housing is just 'clipped' togehter. Pry it apart carefully with a screwdriver, or your fingernail even. If you're doing the HVAC, be careful not to lose the little, tiny metal bar inside of it.

thing is everything is done, those are the only two buttons left.
so you're telling me i can use 194 LED bulbs? they fit right in?

no.
You need your standard 5mm LEDs. And you will need to cut the leads shorter, and solder them to the connectors.
The OEM bulb is not a 194. It's some uber-small bulb with a green difffuser.

^^^ oh yea. I sodered in the resistor in the wire supplying light-power to the switch.

it depends on the LED you use. here are some helpful links:

and from the same site

yeah i know about that lol i take electronic physics i solder all day :)
but i wanna know... for a nice intensity thats not too bright, nice for interior lights, what combo did you use? i will be using 5mm leds, good nuff? mcd and ohm info needed :)

I used 5mm blue. The light isn't too intense partly due to the material in the switch it's shining through. I think you could probably put the brightness of the sun behind it, and it wouldn't be too bright.
Partly because you have to mount the LED so the tip is facing up, instead of forward. Maybe you can get it to fit forward, but I could only get it to fit like the OEM incand. bulb did. As you know, LED is the brightest out the tip.

i bent mine to face forward and shaved the tip off to disperce the light. it still doesn't light up the whole thing evenly. but it's good enough. kewl, i can't remember what resistor i used. the closest recomended according to that calculator and i just used the 5mm regular LED they sell on that site.
how big of a bulb do we need for this?
