Just because of my recent switch to OS X Tiger, I thought I'd see if people are using what I think they are using.

I bet it's mostly Windows, a good size group of Mac OS X, and some unix/linux guys.

What operating system are you using?

I use XP Pro, with SP1.
Just had a recent record of 3 weeks, 4 days uptime. It's pretty stable for me.

i just switched from a lindows to XP Pro because the college here only recognizes 2000 (not ME) and up or OS X (nothing lower)

if there were a way to get OS X to run on my PC i would love that, but then again. i need the windows compatability, which i hear that OS X has something for that. I really don't if thats possible or not. I know it was a rumor when OS X came out and the screen savers (the best nerd show ever!) covered it a looooooooong time ago

You need to pay more attention :P

When you turn it on, the boot screen says "Windows 98" or "Windows XP Home/Pro" :)

at home i run OS X Tiger on both me and the wife's mac laptops; at work i have a windows laptop with XP pro which was just updated with SP2 (i think?). since the update to SP2 it has been slow as hell, it was decent before the update. it may also be all the "big brother" net monitoring and reporting software that my company dumps on all the workstations to monitor us and keep our OS's clean and updated.

Still using XP Pro with SP1, with no updates.
Works perfect for me, but I'm trying to empty up one of my hard drives and get Vista going, I've seen it in action, but I'm pretty sceptical at this point.
I used to use Mandrake (don't know if it's still around), but it was too confusing...
I've been using Windows since version 3.1.
Please don't pity my soul.

WinXP Pro at work, WinXP Home on the desktop and laptop. To redeem myself, I just installed Ubuntu Linux on a 850Mhz Duron at home last weekend. The file system is...different, but it's not bad; it went online with no problem and the usual basic applications are there... just figured out how to switch from Xfce to Gnome yesterday... still playing around.

I've never touched a Linux system in my life, maybe I should though. I've come across more Linux systems as an MCP than I did beforehand...which is odd, I usually deal with microsoft only.

Do what I did. I found this 850Mhz Duron at a thrift store for $20 (minus the hard drive, but I had a spare) and I'm using it to try out Linux. I don't dare mess up my desktop or laptop quite yet, but it's going well, so... someday.

If everything works correctly, I think it's pretty easy and you don't need to know much about the underpinnings. It's when something doesn't go right that you'll be glad you have a perfectly good computer in the next room to look up the solution on.

I though the idiot protection was bad with XP's SP2! Vista asks you 3-4 times everytime you run a program if you are sure you want to run it! more if it connects to the internet.
That is on top of the 6 hours that it took me to figure out that i had to go into my BIOS and disable booting with anything but an onboard vid card!
My PC is left on for weeks at a time (64 bit no heat, no reason to shut if off) Vista froze everyother day, and it would lag after about 12 hours of use.... then again it is a NEW version of windows, it should be running almost perfect by the time the next version is out.

Try a 1.2 gb HD, AMD 266 Processor, 256 ram.
I had tried XP on it, and it did install, but took almost every bit of drive space to do it, so I went back to 98SE. Works great for my kids room. It was mine till about 3 months ago.

I'll probably be getting a copy in the mail eventually. I have an MS express upgrade from a computer I bought at work, but I'm not even concsidering Vista for my work systems until AT LEAST SP1 is released. So, guess where that copy will end up? haha. Cost to me = $10.04. Totally worth the 10 bux for a valid license.

What version of Vista did you get? I qualify for "business" but could cheat the system and get home Premium, but I'm just leaning towards business. I like the backup and security options I've read about.

Is it true that you cannot do a "clean install" with the "upgrade version" of the software? I heard that unlike previous upgrade versions (where you insert your valid older version cd during the install), you have to have a valid windows install on your hard drive to use the Vista Upgrade?

Actually, I read a lot last night on the upgrade versions. If you have a "retail box" upgrade version, you will be able to do a clean install.

However, the "express upgrade" versions from manufacturers (such as Dell, Gateway, HP, etc) will need to have an OS installed, activated, and running the windows genuine advantage tool. The Express Upgrade CD is not bootable, and must be run from a currently-installed OS.

Or so I've read.

I hear that the hackers are already hacking into the system using the voice recognation that is built into Vista. Essentially sending an audio file via email (or over a website) that says "Delete x folder, empty recycling bin" or stuff like that. And since because the voice recognition is activated on boot up (default) a lot of people that don't know about it might be at risk.

Go Windows!

On the note of upgrade vs clean. As for this moment in time and this release. you can actually install some of the upgrades (i think the enterprise edition) clean, but it wont let you register your key and will shut you down in a few days.. but if you do the clean install, THEN pop the same disc back in and *upgrade*... then you can use your upgrade key and have no issues. you just upgrade from vista to vista.. haha, its a bit of a bug, but simple enough to exploit!

i read the article on digg somewhere, they have way more info about which versions this does and doesnt work with.. cant remember at the moment
