so i called the dealership last week about getting the timing belt changed. they said that it would take 4.5 hours, and they would change the accessory belts as well since they have to come off to do the timing belt. said that it would be 405 after parts/labor/tax. ok cool. well, drop the car off last night, guy calls this morning, make sure of whats getting done, told him timing/drive belts. said itll take 4-5 hours, and would be around 490 after everything...WTF? i told him the other guy told me 405 for everything, hes like "well, the timing belt service is 369, around 400 after tax, and the drive belts are another 60$. im like screw that. told him id buy the belts and put em on myself. im just pissed that i thought i would have this all done at once, and now have to go out and spend more money than i thought i was. ugh
but they did call me @ noon and told me that was done, and theyre taking it to the body shop to have the tape peeled off and painted, and i *might* have it back tonight, but if not, first thing in the morning. w00t!

well, the belt alone is like 50-60$ if i remember right, and 4 hours labor is about the standard from where i called around. shops usually 70-80$/hr, so 280-320 labor, tax (6%) etc. is about right. im not complaining, i knew it was coming and its about the same at the places i called, but theyre also doing the window tape, so its all done @ once. im gonna buy the belts and i know jeff (jeffv1970) knows how to change them, so maybe i can buy him some beer and pizza to come over and help me out.

I have 85,000 miles on my car and the timing belt still looks new. There is no play or anything, should I still look into getting it done?

YES YES YES!!!!! Yamaha, those belts were never intended to last past 60k. If it breaks, bye bye valves. I'll be changing mine at around 55k. But I tend to be early on a lo of things.

I just had my car at the dealer Tuesday for a fuel issue. There was a big sign up that said (paraphrasing) "attention Hyundai owners, the service manual is misprinted to say Replace Timing belt at 60,000. When in fact it should read inspect timing belt at 60,000 replace as needed."
This was at D'Arcy Hyundai on Jefferson St. in Joliet.

Just a thought. If they have everything apart to inspect the timing belt, would it wise to change it anyway at that time? You would be paying for the labor to inspect it. :)

^^^ Yea, I'll have them replace the belt at 60K... I just find it strage. We've had the notion that the belt is only good for 60K beat into us for almost 5 years now... then they suddenly change their mind and say 'inspect' instead of 'replace'? It just doesn't sound right?

the mechanics i've talked to said you don't need to change it at 60k... you can wait a little bit past there. my mechanic said i could wait til 70k. luckily my mechanic also does my stuff for free usually with the exception of the parts ;). so it'll cost me like $60 bucks for the timing belt and he'll do it at his house. hehe.

im doing it so there are no future issues if something happens to my engine. my buddy had a DSM, albeit old, but he jumped timing and bent his valves. not something i want to have to deal with.

I hate timing belts. On my 96 accord the timing belt snapped after 65k miles. Engine/trans had to be replaced (cost $2k used with labor) and I traded in the car (dealer never knew). I will definitely change the xd2 belt at the 60k service. I love the fact that nissan/infiniti uses chains on all their models.

The only problem with chains is the plastic guides give out.I've seen that quite a few times. But back to the topic, the dealership I work at,we do the xd belts for a 3 hr job.Labor is 72 bucks an hour and I have no clue what we charge for the belts themselves

i had mine done at 57k. i felt safer knowing it was done then instead of breaking on the road and bending some internals.

thats why i miss driving my good ol safari, it had gears instead of a timing belt or chain...my dealer replaced the timing belt and all the other belts for 300..didnt charge me for labor on the accesory belts

ok...little update. got the car back friday, next day notice they only fixed the pass side window tape. heated, i call, they tell me drop it off. i tell them im gonna need a rental since i dont have a ride to work since this should have been done last week. guy said he doesnt have one, try back wednesday. call wednesday, they have a rental, i get it, drop off the car, go home. today, around noon, i get a call from the dealership. they fixed my windshield washer nozzles (last thing i needed done, forgot abotu last week...werent spraying, line was clogged...back to story) so they call me and tell me they fixed that, and the body shop called down and told them that they made a mistake last week, shouldnt have fixed the tape, THEN he proceeds to tell me that the reason they shouldnt have fixed it is because its only covered to 36k miles under the paint warranty. i tell him thats bull**** (not in those words, but he knew i was pissed) and that i know its covered under 60 because he and the body shop guy (2 buildings seperating them) both told me 60k, and i told him i knew sed and how he works down @ rick case, who told me the same thing. he tells me again, covered under paint warranty. i ask him how he figures that, since its not paint, and its a common problem. he says "it just is". i proceed to ask him for the number to hyundai corporate and the name for the regional district manager. he said he doesnt have the number, but i could talk to his boss. talk to this guy, tells me the same thing, so i tell him i need the number to corporate. he gives me a number, says he will call hyundai corporate and see what they say and call the body shop and call me back. well. i call the number he gave me to check with them...its a bogus number. rings disconnected. so i call sed, get the right number, figure ill call corporate in the morning if he doesnt call me. ive got their rental car so i have transportation, but it pisses me off. he said i would have my car back today by around 5, and waits till noon to call me they're not gonna do it? f- that

little update. been waiting for district manager to call me since last friday (11th) and nothing. called on the 18th and asked why he hasnt called me back..."well, i cant make him call you"...i let him know its in his best interest to do whatever he can to make him call me...today (tues) morning, i get a call from the guy @ the dealership..."i just wanted to let you know, i talked to 'my guy' and he said he is going to cover it". first, im thinking, of course he is. second, im wondering why he said 'my guy' instead of "the DM". oh well. i think he realized how serious i was, talked to the head guy @ the dealership, and they basically slapped him in the back of the head and let him know how much of a f-up he just made. car is going in on monday to get the other side taken care of
