View Full Version : Networking/IP Help
Ok guys, i've tried everything I can think of and cannot get this crap to work. I am trying to allow my computer to be a listen-server on Counter Strike (meaning i play while people join my server) and for some reason my friend cannot connect to me whatsoever. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.
CounterStrike needs these ports open/forwarded:
TCP : 27030-27039
UDP : 1200, 27000-27015
What I have:
Westell 6100 DSL Modem. I have altered the Service Configuration to allow the above ports to be forwarded to my router. Forwards to 192.168.1.47
My router:
Airlink101-AR410W. IP address while connected to the modem: 192.168.1.47
For local networking, I created a static IP. 192.168.2.1. To access the internet, me and my sister (2 dif comps) connect to 192.168.2.1, allowing us to get on. On my router, I have a DMZ set up enabled.
My computer's IP is 192.168.2.2. The DMZ host is 192.168.2.2
When it comes down to it, here's how it goes. Top to bottom.
Internet
Westell 6100 (192.168.1.1) Port forwarding enabled to 192.168.1.47
Airlink101-AR410W (192.168.1.47). Wireless server: 192.168.2.1. DMZ Host: 192.168.2.2
Me. 192.168.2.2
i honestly dont know what im doing wrong. and if it comes down to the fact that my friend has a firewall and thats why it wont let him connect, i will ***** slap him.
if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. i know theres some computer guys out there.. im normally one of them but for some reason i just cant seem to figure out what it is. and with my luck, it'll be something stupid.
Thanks

Firewalls?
I have the firewall on my Westell 6100 Disabled, and the DMZ set up on my Router automatically forwards any incoming ports.. so it shouldnt be a problem with firewalls
UPDATE: my friend said that now he can see my server online, but cannot join it. Error message: LAN servers are restricted to local clients (class C).
So now i need to find out how to make this pos an internet server

It could be your friends firewall is getting in the way, I often have to disable mine when I want to receive a file from a messenger window or play certain games. however just to let you know ip ranges of 192.168.x.x are unroutable to the internet as are 10.x.x.x and a third ip range which I can not recall at the moment, these ranges are reserved for private/internal networks and are hardcoded into tcp/ip to be unroutable with a direct connection to the internet, however since you are using a router it shouldent be a problem.
if you want to make it an internet server have your ports forwarded to your ip address for the game to your computer specifically and then tell your friend to connect to the ip address of the wan side of the router, which is a totally different address than the router has given your computer (ie the wan side of the router will NOT be 192.x.x.x).
my friend told me that he doesnt have a firewall enabled.. but he's on a high speed connection networked up.. so i know he's behind a firewall
the thing is.. he can go onto any other counter strike server and it works fine.. just cant connect to mine.
i found one setting that needed to be changed in the game.. sv_lan needed to be set to 0 for online play. but even after that.. he cant connect..
anyone play CS and know wtf to do? i want to throw my computer out the window
oh, and as far as connecting to the wan side.. i've been giving him that IP. 71.x.x.x.. just didnt wanna stick it on the boards so while my firewalls are down someone can PWN me lol

i used to have this problem all the time. it got to the point where i just gave up. what i think it is, is that since its two diff networks, the configs for his might have to be changed. i think thats how i got it to work for my friend a long time ago in the 1.5 days.
damn steam screwed everything up. along with the fact that i only have experience port forwarding off 1 firewall.. and now its two. i think what ill do to isolate the problem is hook my computer up directly to the DSL modem and see if he can connect. if he can, then i know its a setting w/ my wireless router. thanks for your help guys and any other input is appreciated!

well if you connect your computer directly to the router and he still has problems then it has to be a setting on your side, is windows firewall turned off and are you using a third party firewall such as zonealarm or is windows firewall turned on? Now the ip address you give him is that the one for your current session? most high speed isps use dhcp and you can get reassigned a new ip address usually every 3-7 days or whenever the computer has been idle/off for awhile (ie 1-6 hours) and has released the ip address in which case you get a new one when you (actually the router) reconnects. The ip address you gave him may no longer be the one your computer is using.

okay, for that problem, disable all possible firewalls, and that means more than just turning them off. one thing that i noticed with XP firewalls, in some cases, they will enable once a 3rd party is turned off, so look out for that. as far as the idle time, you have to go into the router prog itself (access the router through 127.0.0.1 <- i think thats it) and change the settings of that. ah the joys of 3 semesters of CCNA training

If your friend hosts a game, can you join on his server?
If your friend hosts a game, can you join on his server?
No i cant.. weird stuff. I have a strong feeling that its probably him because i've done everything right to my knowledge. If anyone plays CS 1.6 steam, AIM me please. It'll really help figuring out wtf is wrong.. ill make a server and see if you can join
Thanks guys

127.x.x.x is the loopback address range (used for testing) he won't be able to acess his router (or anthing external to his computer) through there, just his own computer, he can access the router through the ip address he assigned it which is 192.168.1.47 and change the idle time but thats only if the router supports idle time adjustment and if the router has http configuration, otherwise he will have to use an external configuration program and connect to that same address to configure it. Good catch on the firewall turning them off is not quite the same as disabling it, my bad for using the wrong word. Another more extreme measure I can suggest but not really recommend is upgrading the routers firmware, its relatively easy to do but does have its consequences if something goes wrong. I had computer technician training myself, 2 years worth (associates and 2 advanced certs) + 6 years of experiance before I had the formal training.
ok guys.. i've figured it out. While i was at the shop getting my car, i left my computer on as a listen-server for counter strike. I checked the console.. and people had connected.. played.. and left. the scoreboard said 39-6.. so yes people had joined and were playing. im gonna try and get my friend to connect to me again.. if it doesnt work.. ill kill him. Thanks for your help everyone! i really appreciate it!
