View Full Version : Cabin Air Filter

Lots of people discuss putting the cabin air filter into the slot in the heating/cooling duct located in front of the glove box. They say you can buy the filter from Hyundai and it fits, no mods, etc., etc. Plus some people talk about how to fashion a cheaper model from furnace filters or foam or whatever.
While I was putting in my new head unit, I decided to check out the cabin air filter slot and what it would take to get one in and lo and behold! The car already has the filter! So my question is this: How many people got the air filter already installed on their Elantra?
(Mine, by the way, is an electric red GLS hatchback with AT and gray "sport" interior, if that makes any difference.)

Now, correct me if I am wrong, but I am thinking that the cabin air filter is something that is standard on all cars (well, all recent cars). I don't think that it's a modification to the car, just a maintenance thing, like changing the stock air intake filter...but for the air in the cabin of the car.
Anyway, like I said, correct me if I'm wrong. The reason this is on the site is because people who might change this for you, rip your right arm off and wipe it on the dash when they are done as a blood offering to the god of overpriced car maintenance. My workplace (a group home for disabled people with a work van, 03 Montana) was charged $100 for the cabin air filters to be changed on it the other week. I was not impressed when the invoice came through my inbox about that, because if I'd have done it, we could have saved $70.
Cheers.

nope not standard on mine a 2001 gls..i asked the guy at the dealer for one and he said my model does not use it...
It is a option on most models.I think it only comes standard in the xg.The filters range in price from 25 40 bucks depending on what model.
I have one in mine

You are the same one with the different seats, that makes sense. I bet all the newer cars with "Limited" like features have one standard too.
2002 GLS - definitely not one stock.

Wow, I stand corrected. I've got one on my standard 02 GLS. Maybe the workers at Hyundai just threw them in randomly...add a little spice to the production process.

Bringing an old topic up from the grave...I did a search for seats and came across this lol.... anyway I read on a WRX forum about them placing dryer sheets on top of the air filter, lightly sprayed with their favorite scent. Seems like a good idea, has anyone tried this in our car?

lol last time i heard about dryer sheets in the air vents it was b/c people were using illegal drugs in the car. I hear all kinds of stories from retired police officers and stuff where i work about kids they would pull over with dryer sheets all over in there car trying to cover the smell up .

Haha, it kind of makes sense. But dryer sheets don't last that long. Seems like you'd be replacing them every week.

I have the cabin air filter, and I've noticed that I occasionally get that "sweat sock/wet dog" smell when using the A/C. I think it's a result of water that gets caught in the ductwork and doesn't drain properly. I've only had that smell once or twice, and it seems I don't get it if I drive the last mile or two with no A/C before parking.

Hmmm...I got curious and went looking in there...there's a hole with a clip on cover...when you take the cover off there is the blower, but no filter...looks like I could just slide a filter in though, is this so?
Or should there have always been a filter in there? Any idea how much they cost?
Filter is $30+ shipping here (https://www.hyundaipartsonline.com/product_info.php/cPath/27_114_56/products_id/342), probably over $40 at the dealer. I think '05 and newer have filter from factory, not sure though. I haven't checked mine.

You can get the cabin air filter at most autoparts stores. I was an asst. manager at a local lube place and we def. carried them. I do NOT recommend spraying any type of air freshener on your filter. That is how dust and debree build up at a more rapid speed and will limit the air flow.

I don't think the filter helps out with smell. Even with a filter, I still get that moldy a/c smell if I haven't turned the AC on for awhile. To help out with the smell and your A/C system, it's best that you at least run it for a little bit once a week.
The filter will prevent dirt and debris from blowing into your car, but it's not hypo-allergenic, so don't expect it to stop your allergies.

Unplug ur cabin fillter it will turn off ur AC and will cause the power u lose from it being constantly on to go to ur engine ull gain power. I tried it the other day i swear i noticed a little extra power especially on the response timeing. Give it a try.

I know there is a Purolater filter that works for the Elantra cabin air filter. Let me search a bit and see if I can't find that number.
And yeah, I've gotten "the smell" and my car came with a cabin air filter. Searching through old threads (http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12848&highlight=cabin+air+filter), found someone who says the Purolator C45384 works for the Elantra.

I found one at Shucks Auto Supply for 29 bucks. I'll go with that. I think the guy above you was cracked...there's no way that removing the cabin air filter is going to effect the power of the car or the operation of the AC...if you want the AC off turn it off, it's that simple lol...you don't need to remove the filter.
I'm hoping that putting a filter in will help me keep some of the famous Palouse dust out of my car...it's crazy this time of year, so dry...and the farmers kickng the **** up doesn't help any lol.

Ummmmmmmm....the AC isn't constanly on unless you're driving around with the defrost on all the time, or the ac on all the time...you have the ability to turn your A/C off you know. Removing the filter won't affect how the A/C works at all.

I had trouble understanding what he was trying to say also, but maybe what he's trying to say is that he feels like more air is blowing in without the filter, which to a certain extent would be true because there's nothing blocking airflow, but the extra cfm of air won't make too much of a difference to me compared to the benefits of having the filter in place.

i mean unplug it dont do anything with the filter. You know where the plug goes into the filter thngy at the bottom that makes the fan filter spin around and clean the cabin air....unplug it youll gain throttle response power. Ive tried it numerous times

Ummmm...dude...you unplug the blower, you lose the ability to circulate cooled air in the cabin...meaning you have no a/c....now, I don't know about where you live...but this time of year it gets pretty damn hot around where I live...you go ahead and have no a/c if you want...I'll stick with the a/c for now, thanks.
As for throttle response...hahahahahahahahahaha. All you're doing is unplugging a FAN...you want more power here's how you do it...you see that little button above your HVAC controls that says "A/C" on it and has a little green light? PUSH IT and the little green light turns off and BAM! More power because you're not running the a/c anymore. push it again and BAM! you've got nice cool air on those 100 degree summer days. Alternately....don't leave your hvac controls on either defroster setting or you WILL be running the AC all the time even if you're blowing hot air.
Soooo...now that we've established that you're nuts...I'm going back to The Simpsons.

ya disconnect the ac/ Cabin filter from the Battery completely which can be done by disconnecting the clip (with the wires) at the bottom of the cabin filter. Under the glove box. ( you may have to remove the glove box to do it just for a moment then put it back on.
See the concept is even though you dont have the a/c on or anything the filter is still working while u drive cleaning the air. So infact its using power still and since the A/C & the cabin filter are the main source of power lose besides your various electrical things (lights gauges etc.) disconnecting it completely from the batter will give back all the lost power to the engine. Resulting in a increase in throttle response.
Its like the oppsoite off when u turn the AC on. You notice the loss in power. But when u completely disable the cabin filter from doing its normal spinning and filtering the unknown lose of power will be given back to the engine.

You're completely cracked. That fan isn't doing anything to rob you of power. If your "theory" is correct, I should also disconect my radiator fans, headlights, radio, taillights, cabin lights, and anything else that creates any kind of electrical draw...haha, thanks for the laugh though.

its funny cause i thought exactly what u thought before i tried it. BUt until u try it u cant sit here and tell me what is right and wrong.
just so u know if u disconnect it it stops everything A/c and cabin filter so the whole turn the light off so the A/c isnt taking the cold are or w/e u said none of that will be in effect. If u unplug that little fan. It does more then just stop a fan.

DUDE, if you turn the a/c off...it does just that...TURNS THE A/C OFF. Why in the hell would you tell anyone to disconnect their ac when they can simply turn it off...especially in the SUMMER. Do you live at the north pole? do you not need a/c this time of year? Need the number of a good shrink?
