I've been to every known autoparts store in my area. (not the dealer yet).

NOBODY has GL-4 Gear oil !!!!!!!!!

The closest one that I could find was something from Pennzoil called " Synchromesh " gear oil and it did not specify ANY API rating !!!!!!!!! It mentioned that it is compatible with all gold colored transmission gear synchronizers or something to that effect ...

Anyway, I did not buy it because I am not convinced that it is safe to use.

Anyway, I need to find out what current manufacturer sells a GL-4 (or suitably compatible) gear oil that is not also GL-5 rated ... (backward compatible gear oils are NOT safe to use on the transmission based on the 3 + blown trannies from members on this board who blew them up by using those gear oils) ...

ok...

I don't want to use those fancy schmancy brands that other people have used... I want the regular oil based stuff ...

Any ideas ?

( updated: I found this: http://www.pennzoil.com/products/gear_oil/syn_gear7590.html looks good to me... now.. where can I buy it !! ??? ).

cypher, i know there are debates about that kind of oil that is compliant with both 4 and 5. i know 2004elantraGLS on here has that oil in for a while now, you should PM him and ask, but he didnt inform us about problems related to that so i will guess that everything is cool.

Got mine replaced under warranty when 2nd gear went out @ 52k. The transmission alone is over $1700 not including labor to install. You're talking $2500+ if it needs replaced out of warranty. :(

Also a big question mark on how long a used one will last, especially if it has very many miles on it. A rebuild out of warranty would make much more sense. A rebuild would be less expensive but still big $$$ considering how much an older Hyundai is worth.

I used Royal Purple for over 30K miles and haven't had a problem....knock on wood. Their's is rated for GL-4 and GL-5.

The dealer only sells gl4 & gl5 compatible trans fluids... if you want the TRUE gl4 fluid, you have to PAY to have the service tech actually change it for you. From what I was told, the dealer only stocks ture GL4 in the actual service gallon jugs and they ONLY use it when they do a trans fluid change...

so.... that means you can't buy the true GL4 directly from the dealer seperately.
