View Full Version : Well it finally happened....

I've been driving for more than two years in Korea and managed to keep clear of all the nuts. Aside from all the times they hit the car while it was parked.Today my winnng streak came to an end.

A stupid Korean man driving a Galloper (Oversized, underpowered POS SUV) decides to cut across the road right in front of me, despite me being on the horn the second he entered the roadway.

(They completely ignore the horn here. It's only used as a way to absolve yourself of responsibility for stupid acts. IE you honk your horn before you go through a red light and that means you're not responsible if anyone hits you. "Well ****, I honked how can it be my fault?")

I thought he was just making the "no look pullout" manuever, BUT NO, he was going right across the road. I hit the brakes and yanked the wheel to the left but the stupid *** kept coming. I was short by a mere 2cm (less than an inch for the Yankees). However almost ain't good enough. That two centimeters amounted to a light scratch on his already beat to **** front left bumper but a mighty gash and dent halfway down the right side of my car.

Had I not bought fancy tires, strut bar, and sway bar, it would have been a much mightier impact. All afternoon I've been thinking ("**** I should have bought new struts and springs too, that might have been enough")

Regardless, it was his fault and I have fancy *** Korean insurance anyway so I took it to the shop today to get checked out. Looks like the rear right door, rear right quarter panel, if thats what its called and maybe the rear bumper. I'll post pics once I have them developed. The panel behind the rear door is huge and I imagine expensive, so it'll take 5 days or so to fix it.

In the mean time I have a Kia Cerrato Premium Gold Hatchback as a rental (no charge). I'll post some pics. It has all the amenities that my Avante does, only its smaller and not red. :( Also Engine is a 1.5 liter. All you who think the Elantra is a slow car, come to Korea. I put my foot to the floor in this thing and though to myself "**** (I say that a lot), my Avante is a muscle car." Since Kia and Hyundai share a lot of parts a lot of the controls were exactly like my Avante. Only Auto. :( Ugh.

Stupid, stupid, stupid Korean men and their SUVs. You have to be dumb to buy one here to start off with, but I am still amazed when they seek to demonstrate just how stupid they are through their driving. Especially when it comes at my expense. I would like to add that he was shocked when I told my wife to demand his phone and call the cops (After I finished swearing at him). He actually though he was going to **** up my ride and walk away with an I'm sorry. Dumbass I hope his insurance company gouges the crap out of him.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that! I am glad, however, that your insurance is taking care of you so well and that you had the sense to get some good insurance in the first place. I hope you get that muscle car back soon!

I am really sorry about what happened
I lived in Korea for 9 years and know how insane some drivers are...
However, there's no need to generalize all koreans and make racial comments like "stupid, stupid, stupid korean men"
It's not just in Korea where there are crazy drivers and it certainly isn't just in Korea where people shouldn't be driving an SUV
I am sure we can all agree that there will always be bad drivers and stupid people who decide to drive SUV despite the shortage of gasoline
On a side note, I am glad you will be reimbursed for all parts/labor
Its very unfortuante that you have to go through this kind of incident

FYI:In the mean time I have a Kia Cerrato Premium Gold Hatchback as a rental (no charge). I'll post some pics. It has all the amenities that my Avante does, only its smaller and not red.Kia Cerrato Hatch = Kia Spectra5 in the U.S. (assuming 2004 1/2 or later). Same platform as the Elantra/Avante; body reminiscent of the current Mazda3 Wagon (same chief designer). It may be just a tad bit shorter due to the stub-backed hatch, but otherwise should be very nearly the same size as the Elantra/Avante.

I looked seriously at both the Elantra hatch and Spectra5 before settling on the Elantra.

If the XD is a muscle car there, imagine taking an old charger or something there. Now that would be insane! haha

Ummm I never said all Korean men are stupid. Only that there are indeed stupid korean men, and they do indeed drive SUVs. Not to say they all do. Many stupid Korean men also drive big black cars, wear track suits, carry a purse, talk on their cellphones while smoking with their other hand while they drive. All of which they do while drunk.

Nor did I imply there are only bad drivers in Korea. I had a woman do almost the exact same thing to me in my Integra while I was living in Cananda. She was from Argentina. I'm guessing they have driver education comparable to Korea's. That is to say, next to none. :)

I stand behind my coment about needing to be stupid to drive an SUV in this country. The roads are small, narrow, crowded, parking spaces are small even if you can find one and gas is stupidly expensive. By far most Koreans live in cities. You don't need an SUV in this country, or most countries for that matter. Never mind that the engines they come with can't tow a tent, forget about a boat or trailer. Korean men buy them, and their big black cars for one main reason. They have small man complex in a bad way.

I was in no way shape or form making any global coments about all Korean people. I have lived and worked here for 5 years. I work with Koreans, I live with Koreans, I eat with Koreans and my wife is Korean. I see what goes on here. There are inumerable comercials on TV for miracle hair growth and dye treatments and magic sexual stamina gadgets and potions for a reason. Korean men are by and large insecure. Once again not all of them, but the mammoth industry that caters to them is in business for a reason. There is money to be made there.

If it makes you feel better I will say that a lot of Canadians are fat, lazy and don't know what hard work is, especially when compared to Koreans. :) Just don't call me racist. It's not just Koreans, I could have said "Stupid stupid stupid men and their SUVs" but what about all the poor stupid people in China (or elsewhere) still riding bicycles? My way is much more accurate. Though I must admit I do have a problem with any culture that says peeing in the street is okay. I don't throw coments like that out lightly and I can point to all sorts of things to back up what I said.

Oh, and while I'm at it, had I been driving the same vehicle (or some other POS) SUV as that jackass, he'd likely be dead, or crippled and I'd be shoping for a new car. SUVs are bad, hatchbacks are good. Ahhh for the days when soccer moms drove station wagons again..... :)
