If I'm not mistaken, gear oil should be changed every 60k miles. However, you should consult your car manual, as it also outlines when your essential fluids should be changed.

I don't know all that much car talk, but that just doesn't sound right...too many for's or something. Maybe you meant to say 30k for old man transmission gear or something like that...it's too darn early.

No Buddy ..... my hyundai dealer told me 30K... So you go ahead and run with a tranny that will start grinding around 40-50k and then you change it.... by then you'll need to hit up this site....http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TRANSMISSION-HYUNDAI-ELANTRA-1999-2000-AT-60977_W0QQitemZ8018217859QQcategoryZ33727QQssPageN ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

Your dealer LIED!

The maintenance log specifies "inspection" every 30K miles. Replacement is NOT REQUIRED at all for normal driving. For "Severe Use", changes are only required every 96K miles. Change it more often if you like, but it's not going to gain you much, if anything.

That said, I changed mine at 10K, but only because I switched to Redline MT-90 synthetic. It's entirely possible that will be the only time it gets changed for the life of the car.

whew. it was early. my manual says to change gear OIL for man tranny 30k miles. i dont know why you wouldnt just spend 15$ and 30 min to change it to risk messing anything up

Man, I honestly can't tell if you're just being a troll or what. Bnystrom said it's written to inspect every 30k and that is exactly what my '04 manual tells me. If you want to blindly trust the dealer, that's cool with me, but don't insist that it's fact just because they told you so. For what it's worth, in the manual it defines "inspect" as, loosely, take it apart and check it out and make sure it's still good and if it isn't then replace. Maybe that's what your dealer was trying to tell you, if they aren't trying to mislead from HMA's original recommendations.

then again, my manual also says I've got cupholders in the back seat of my hatch, so yeah.

I thought that you had to do a transmission oil change every 30K or every 2 years.

Everytime I see this thread I keep expecting to see someone's sister's phone number being listed or something.

guys!

WTF.

Ok.

1- The book says to change it every 96k
2- Depending on your driving you might not even need to change it. EVER. If you're 86 years old. And if you're that old and driving a standard, well, I'll be the monkey's uncle.

MENALLYCHLGND:

The BEST oil to use, and I think I'm not the only one to say it, would be the Redline MT-90.

I am switching to it on sunday. I have driven an XD with it and WOW .

is there really that big a difference in driving with redline gearoil felix?

Well, versus the regular dino oil they use in our boxes, the full synthetic redline oil was REALLY nice. The shifts were crisp and there was no longer the feeling of dragging through mud and gravel in order to shift.

I definately recommend it to anyone out there.

I heard that Royal Purple makes some nice API GL-4 oil, but the only person on these boards that I know has that is XTRAWLD, and who knows if she'll see this thread...

I didn't notice that much of a difference, but I made the change before the winter hit last year. One thing I do notice compared to manual trannys I've driven with regular gear oil is that it doesn't stiffen up nearly as much in cold weather. In summer, there's not really any discernable difference in feel.

Granted maybe my oil is old and i have no NEW regular gear oil to compare to.
