I have a set of 17x7's on my car, and they came with 205-40's. I am just wondering what size most people are running to keep the speedo right.

I believe the correct tire size is 205/45-17. The 40s will alter your speedo by like 1 or 2 Mph.

yes, 205/45-17 is the most accurate w/ speedo

215/40-17 would also be very close. And 215/45-17 is not all bad. ;)

Here's a tire calculator for you...

215 45 might rub depending on wheel offset! I had trouble with that before. your safer staying at 205

True. It might rub. But not with 40 - 45mm offset on the sedans. Mine are 215/45-17 w/ 40mm offset wheels. No rubbing problems for 1 1/2 years now. You can also lower it with Eibach springs and actually decrease the chance of rubbing due to the added stiffness.

Since I was figuring this out on my own for my new 17" wheels... at 60mph
195/45 give you 1.25% smaller circumference, you're really going 59.25mph
205/45 give you 0.2% larger circumfence, so you'll really be going 60.12mph
215/45 give you 1.67% larger circumference, so it'll really be 61mph.
225/40 (wide!) gives you 0.52% smaller, so you'll really be going 59.69mph.

Can't say unless you know the offset. What wheels do you have? Have you tried contacting the company that sold them or the company that manufactures them? Most wheel companies for FWD applications will only make 1 or maybe 2 different offsets for a given wheel in a given size, with the exception of some of the high-end brands. Most likely, you should be able to figure out what the offset is just by asking them.

OK, well it probably will rub then over large bumps. But if you're determined to make it work you could probably correct for it by setting the negative camber in the rear to 1.2 degrees negative. Or by rolling your fenders.

Why do you want 215/45's? Why not go with 215/40's or 205/40's and not have to worry? Right now you can get Kumho Escta 711's in 205/40R17 size for $51 each from www.tirerack.com. With shipping to Pittsburgh, a set of four ran me $230. They're not the best tire you can get, but they look good, handle better than a High Performance All Season 15" tire, and you can't beat the price!
