View Full Version : New members and Searching!

It has come to my attention that over the last couple weeks there has been a lot of problems regarding new members and perhaps their lack of appreciation for the SEARCH function.

For new members, please read this announcement that can be found at the top of every section:

If you are new to EXD, welcome! Please take a while to browse the forums and look around. If you have any questions try using the SEARCH function to find information. If you don't find anything on the first search try a couple different things and see what you come up with. This will make you comfortable with the sights and sounds of EXD and you'll find your information with much less confusion and much less being told to search repeatedly. The moderators of EXD will close topics that show a blatant disregard to this message.

For old/regular members, please do not post in threads started by new members telling them to SEARCH! Like the annoucement notes, the moderators will be closing threads that we feel need to be closed. If you post in these threads and disregard this post and what I am saying, then we will ban you if needed (keep in mind we don't want to do this, and also, it would not be a permanent ban or anything extreme).

Thanks... discuss... nicely...

Thanks Super for addressing the "issue" I'll stop harassing them/wasting internet space but my sig shall remain!

(BTW) By the Way: My sig also has 2 links to my site where I've compiled ALOT of aftermarket modifications all together, so read through them next time you ask for example: ("Hmmmm, are there any lowering springs out there for my Elantra???") In many cases you can replace "lowering springs" with most other modifications that come to your mind.

Also when you DO have a question that has NOT been answered in those threads that you have found/SEARCHED for and FULLY read, Simply REVIVE the old thread instead of starting a new one. It will help keep everything on that issue linked together.

You could have saved alot of time and just PM'ed evan this message :)

it was a jk

^^^ IF the problem was one member - a PM would have fixed it. There were many people that were being harsh to new members - which is why it was dealt with in this manner.

This was the first thing I thought of, but I didn't post it because I didn't want to get flamed by a mod who couldn't take a joke.

^^^ I'm not 'flaming someone' because I couldn't take a joke. I don't want the entire forum thinking all of 'this' was one member's fault - because it wasn't.

I guess I would just like to take this opportunity to say sorry to Evan for the recent posts I've made with reference to him. He was being a bit harsh, but that was no reason to make him the centre of all the jokes on here. I don't particularly think that it is smart to single someone out like that, who has been a member for as long as evan has. We don't want to push someone else away like we did to sed.

i would like to fess up, im not joking at all... i am guilty of this "issue" on more than one occasion and this is my formal apology on that matter

I'm sorry.

Is it just me, or does the second rule seem like a more common issue than the first? Newbs will be newbs. When the only thing you can say is Search, "stupid noob," etc, to the point where you contribute nothing whatsoever, I think that's wrong. Some ppl need to remember this is a public community, not a private membership.

And on a side note, while Im ranting (LOL), its wrong to personally attack someone's mods. Daillestwun's body kit comes to mind where in his thread people were constantly calling it ricey, ugly, etc etc.

"If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all."

There are ways to disagree with someone's mod choice, or inform noobs, without being rude and immature. EXD is here to build the elantra community, not turn them away (which EXD has a rep of doing).

(This post was not addressed toward anyone in particular.)

Everyone needs to watch this. :abovelol: :abovelol: Although it applies to Steam/Valve its VERY relevant to this issue.

I just pm'd evan about his signature and thought this was very cool. I did not want to start any crap and be the bad boy on the block.

I think this is a problem on most forums and probably not just Hyundai's. All though sometimes I think it could be that a newbie is so excited that they found an incredible site that shows them options they never thought they had when they bought their Hyundai. That's how I was when I first posted on Hyundaiperformance.com forums back in 2001 when I bought my Accent brand new. But, I will say one thing, the first time some torn into my *** and told me to search and that this was already discussed... guess what I did? I searched for a little bit before I made a post or renewed an old thread.

Thanks for the update for newbs SuperGLS, hopefully this will make them feel more at home.

Question: Why doesn't a new member make their first post about them and their car, like an introduction of them so we as members can know who they are.
ex: Hey, my name is jason and I own a 2004 Elantra hatch, I like electronic....etc.

Just wondered. It seems like your update might cure some of this though SuperGLS.

Cheers,
J-son :)

Thanks for doing the bump. I missed the second parts of Super's first post about the older people shutting up and not suggesting the Search function. I guess I'm done e-thugging for a while. Time to be a nice guy.

I'd missed this announcement as well.

I do try to offer suggestions for posts from Newbies, but I also try to remind them of the search feature because some of the Newbies don't even open the stickies at the top of the sections they post their questions to... I will refrain from doing so in the future.

2 years ago this was started. . . I'd say this "fix" isn't working so well

Maybe time for something a little more . . . effective?

Munky
08-23-2007, 08:40 AM
Well, I'm sure James would agree there's nothing wrong with reminds newbies about the search feature as long as you're nice about it. After all, he does the same thing.

There's a big difference between this:

"Welcome to the site, here's the info you asked for, but next time please search the site, it makes it easier on all of us, yada yada yada...."

and this:

"Use the search button you ****ing newb."

Good call Munky.

Be nice about it, suggest a few threads, and say welcome. People will get it.

If they repeatedly don't and I don't notice send me a PM and I'll talk to the person. People listen to me.

But the second approach is much more effective! :abovelol:

It'll also prove effective in you being banned. Happy 24th of August.

I'm with my mentor, Bob, on this one. However, I don't like Super's suggestion of being banned, even if it's for one minute. EXD is well, kinda like my life, sort of.

But I promise to behave from time to time. But look out though, someone snaps at me, it'll be all over. You can kiss the thread good bye after that.

I had a laugh when I read back over this thread.

I think we've come a long way with our "touchy-feely" ways in the last two years since this thread was started. But once in a while its nice to make a public example of someone!
