How many gallons does my tank hold?
I swear its 14.5 but tonight I put 14.1 gallons in it. I dont believe it could get that empty.

its 14.5.. the other day i went to a gas station to fill up. the meter read 15.3 gallons. So i got ripped off by about $2.50

EDIT: unless theres some kind of "emergency" gas tank thing. you know.. like a spare resevoir just in case you must go farther

For a long time my all time high was 14.7 gallons (tank plus the tube running to the tank). The other day I hit 15.1. I do run my car to E almost everytime (although some people say it's a bad idea) and if I don't fill up more than 13.5 gallons I'm upset with myself, haha. I would say if you were able to fill up 15.3 or more than the pumps at the gas station could be off. There was a station shut down in my area because they weren't accurate.

I used to work for a fuel tank manufacturer. The advertised capacity is generally a minimum capacity and there is some overage built into it. An extra gallon or so is not uncommon.

I've filled my tank to 15.1 and to 14.9 gallons before. I can generally get 410-430 miles on a full tank, although my mileage has gone down with the cold weather.

isnt milage supposed to be better in cold weather?

^^^Not necessarily. Cold weather acts like having a CAI... colder air = more dense, which means more fuel can be mixed with it.

yeah... well, doesn't denser air burn fuel more "efficiently"?

Since our cars run rich already, it brings up the a/f ratio, thus producing more "power" with the same volume of air... So, your car functions better and is more economic, no?

like... a cai does help with consumption...

im confused... i guess i have n00bed out, just came back from a disgusting biology exam

I also run the defroster almost all the time and the strain from the ac compressor running hurts the mileage too.

True true....

Although I try not to use the A/C in the winter.

(in Canada we can defrost without the A/C, haha, take that America LOL)

Whereas a CAI does usually improve milage, this is more due to an unrestricted intake than just colder air. The fuel input is not constant, it is variable with the temperature of the air being taken in (hence why those scam Air Intake Temperature sensor over-rides are on Ebay). Those in theory are made to make the computer think the air is colder, so it dumps in more fuel.

As far as the A/C and defrost - running air through the A/C improves the defrost function. It is not a 'mistake' or 'accident' that the A/C runs on defrost mode - here's why:

Air can hold less moisture when it is cold. So the AC runs to cool the air, thus drying the air. Then it is heated before being blown onto the window. In this way the air is 'dryer' and can absorb more moisture - taking any condensation off of the window.

Gas in winter time has more additive in it and the energy content is lower. This should be the reason cold air doesn't help with the mileage.
