whatsup guys, cars due for a tune-up im prolly gonna do it today (clean & oil the K&N, change oil, and SPARKPLUGS) heres the problem-
i have never changed a sparkplug before. SO.... how is this done? :D
after taking the wires off, what do i do? i need specifics, i know to get ngk coppers, i did some searching and in all the threads i read you guys already know what your doing so no-one covers the basics. i know this is supposed to be common knowlege but ive never done it before. its not like ill have any trouble i just dont know where to start, and this "gapping" you all speak of confuses me lol. ive seen the quarter shaped gapping tool but dont know how to use them.
so any DIY-ish info would be awesome.
gracias ;)

It's real basic.
You will need a spark plug removal tool, and it's the smaller one, not the big one. Lefty loosey, right tighty, same as ordinary bolts. They will feel kinda tight in there, but they will loosen up.
Do one cylinder at a time and then connect that wire back up.
As far as gap, they are supposed to be pregapped. A good way to make sure is to compare all four and insure they appear gapped the same. Then compare them to the old spark plug. It's cheating, you really should use that tool, but it works. You'll find the gap info in another thread.
When tightening them back in, make sure not to over tighten. Tighten the spark plug till you feel tension, then give it another quarter turn, and you'll be good to go.
As a novice, it might take you a little longer, but an average spark plug change will only take 15-20 minutes.
Good luck and I hope I gave you some idea of what to do...

^^ he just about covered everything. obviously you're going to need an extension to reach down there. if they chose to be a pain you might need a lil magnet to pull the plugs out. if it doesn't wanna stay in the sparkplug tool that is. turn the wires to the left then pull off. it wouldn't hurt to do wires while you're at it.

By spark plug removal tool, they mean a special socket with a rubber boot inside.

just try your best to keep oil and grease from getting on the rubber boot inside... I got some oil on mine by accident and it would slide right off the plugs and not take them out. Took me forever to clean out wiht some degreasers to get it to grab again. :(

sounds easy enough, thanks for the help guys. if anyone else has any info, its welcome. you guys rule. so its just like tightening and untightening a bolt.

All great advice... only thing I would add is to be *paranoid* about not cross-threading the new plugs in your expensive aluminum head... start them in by hand... I usually use just the plug extension without the ratchet. Don't force them in. You might even consider some anti-seize on the threads. Enjoy!
This PDF can help you read your engine by the spark plugs.

i got an elantra hanes manual today, its so cool, it has everything, i love it. one tip it had was to slip a piece of rubber hose over the top of the plug and use that to get it started.
but yeah i went to pep boys and autozone and neither had NGK coppers for an elantra so i guess i have to get the online, anyone know a good place other that ebay, or is that my best bet?
i cant even find them online...where do you guys get the ngk copper plugs?

any autoparts store in the USA should have them.
part #: NGK BKR5E-11
you do not have to re-gap them. just plug and play.

Keep those plugs stores in a dry place...
I just got some NGK platinum plugs from member: 2001gls because he just bought a new Sonata and had plugs he never used. Well, they are in the mail. I need to find some wires... I want good ones, but I don't want them blue or red.

Spark Plug DIY
Sometimes the actual pictures help a lot. I'd done plugs before, but never were they as easy as on the XD (91 taurus v6, plugs were awful to get at) Good luck
