i have 2001 elantra. I want to buy alpine turbo or supercharger kit. What works better with an automatic transmission? Which will get me better 1/4 mile time? If i get the turbo it would be stock compression, intercooled, about 7~8 PSI.

For an automatic, I would get the supercharger just for the fact that the automatic's don't really have that much torque.

supercharger if you don't plan on making it faster, turbo if it just's the beginning of your mods.

id say the entry level turbo kit, thats what im asving up for, i LOVE the whine of a turbo!!!:) even though a mean growling s/c engine sounds nice too!

hrm, ive compiled a list of things that i want to do to my car to make it "complete" the only performance thing other than suspension would be a FI setup. I have an automatic and pretty much just want to get up to about 200whp, would a SC do the job or a TC?
I am looking not much for a whine but a growl, but i do sorta get off on the turbo's BOV

Go with a Turbo. You will have more gains. You can run up to 200WHP on our Tranny and 225whp with a tranny oil cooler. Anything more than that you will have to upgrade your Tranny. I would go to 200 and see what happens then. If you want more then I would consider the upgrade to the tranny.

DMdicks has provided on other forums and this one as well that the automatic tranny can withstand 250whp. With that being said, a low spooling T25 or T28 would be perfect. They spool at around 1,900-2,100rpm, and can hold upto 300whp on a GOOD tune. Everything really come's down to tuning the engine. Alpine has the Unichip for that. Either way, I would say go turbo, its more fun and you can keep those engine temp's down unless you go with Alpine's stageI supercharger.

Well also remember, DmDicks has a lot more knowledge in tuning these cars to run good than most of us do. That is why I say go up to 200whp to be safe.

Alot of people have knowledge on these engines. It all comes down to who is going to tune your car.

supercharges kill your gas mileage, you might as well be driving a 6.0L gto..i remeber someone asking ford "so hows the gas mileage" ford said "it drinks gas" and he had some pretty sad #'s with the alpine sc...a slow gas guzzling 4 banger...not my cup o tea..but that jus me dawg..shark racing or alpine bolt on turbo kit

now i wouldn't call it slow... hehe... although my gas mileage is sucking it mostly because i like to hear the s/c whine... i have yet to turn on my stereo since getting my s/c properly installed with new belt... also got remote start so that is sucking up my gas too... and lowering my mpg...
too bad its been a frozen tundra here the last 2 days...can't see how fast the accel is...
funny how a stock non FI owner is calling a FI pioneering XD SLOW... gimme a break man....later this year i might look into twin charging/alcohol/water injection or switch to turbo but S/C is what i have now...
either way FI will only kill gas mileage if you are in boost a lot...otherwise you should be doing better if not the same... just stay out of the boost... but what FUN is that....

I have to point out that Ford WAS NOT using the Alpine setup the way it was supposed to be used. The Unichip is a big part of the setup and under most conditions timing is added to help with power and gas milage. Ford was using a different Fuel Tuner than the Unichip and he had no real timing controls in place.
Also any performance option can lower your MPG if you use it for what it was intended to do, which in most cases is create more power. With that said tests have shown that if driven normally the Supercharger kit in conjuction with the Unichip can slightly improve your MPG rating.

It's not so much that it was slow. I loved riding around in Fords super-charged ride. He just wasn't impressed by the amount of WHP for the money.

funny... when my cousin let me drive my car right after he first installed the s/c he said..."don't worry about putting your foot down... its the only way you are going to feel the performance you paid for... now FLOOR IT!!!" after that it was a nice 2 hours of double speed limit driving on the local highways...which reminds me.. I have to cut a hole in my expensive A$$ weathertechs to get the pedal back to full travel... he complained about not being able to floor it fully b/c of that lol....
i dunno about reality but I feel that i get better acceleration even before I am in the boost...prob because i'm at boost vac equilibruim at about 1/4 throttle... hehe
now all I have to do is custom ductwork from lower grille to behind battery for cold air...

ok for a hyundai it was fast, but im sure it would not keep up with stock cobalt ss's or srt4's...has anyone seen dyno #'s on a properly tuned alpine sc kit..if its at the very least 185 then i guess thats not bad...but i have to admit i love the whine of a blower...much like this one....

yeah... i agree it will not keep up... but i did not want to keep up with the racer crowd...the car i got is a heavier more subdued car than a srt4 or cobalt SS....and to add the blower was just to counteract the a/c and add some power....which it did... sure turbo is cool and I might go that way later but s/c is serving its purpose right now sleeper style...
I want to disagree with your reasoning on this one. A supercharger drinks gas, but if you don’t use it, you don’t lose it. I had a GTP with a boosted 3.8 v-6, that would get 32-33 on the highway, usually better GM than the non SC GT. That shows to be better than a lot of Elantras here. She would make full boost by 2700 rpms, but would sip gas on the highway, because it was geared around the SC. Cruising RPM was around 1800-2000 rpms. Get the pedal past half, and the boost gauge start moving.
Stay out of boost, and you got no worries, better yet, gear your car for what you need it for, and then definitely don’t worry about it.

yeah but that is a stock sc car, alittle more r&d goes into that for emissions, longevity etc..im not saying the sc sucks balls. im just saying that the only kit out there for the xd's could be better..like maybe figure out a way to intercool it, and work around the fitment issues ford had, unless that has already been done..if it had that option i would buy it...regardless of fuel economy

sorry, no intercooling, the eaton supercharger replaces the IM....

fitment issues are a pain yes... but as i have the kit now and it works on my car but fitment is different on my car from his car... different cars have different issues inherent in the variety of configurations... ex... he needed a spacer kit for his fitment but the same kit did not require a spacer kit on my car...my car required a shorter belt than even that of fordfasterr's car.....
you want intercooling then put in a water/alcohol injection...
fitment issues I had:
1. cruise control rendered useless with stock cable...
fix: rip out cruise control...didn't use it anyways.... cruise put me to sleep
2. no bracket for my throttle cable bracket....
Fix: rig one up from a Honda Civic bracket
3. brake booster hose in way of manifold...
Fix... bend brake booster outlet so it is less vertical and out of way of manifold...newer kits should have a shorter throttle body mount block on the blower to eliminate this problem....
4. Unichip wiring instructions WRONG!!!
Fix: use some ingenuity and a voltmeter and other readily avaliable analysis tools any mechanic should have...
5: Drive Belt too long (used belt)
Fix: new shorter drive belt cut to 4 rib configuration.....
again yes it was annoying but rarely will you have full bolt in kit without issues...
if you can't deal with these issues... only way to go FI is a stock FI car...
