Blow-off Valves are not exclusive to turbocharged applications!
I just want to clear this up for all those self-proclaimed forced induction gurus out there. These past months I've seen this happen very often:
Let me give you a scenario:
User1(n00b): Hello, I am wondering if I should go for a turbo or S/C.
User2(Self-Proclaimed FI Guru): DUDE! Definately go for a TURBO man, think about the BOV DUDE, BOVs are cool and make SOUND
User3(Friend of the Self-Proclaimed FI Guru): Yeah! PSsssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhh pshhhhhhhh pshhhhhhhhhh pshpshpshpshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhtpshphshppthhppsp spspshhhhh :D
I just want to send a message out there. BEFORE POSTING SOMETHING, think about it. By saying things like these, you are giving out false information that can be read by third party members and lead them to bad decisions.
Blow-off Valves are not exclusive to turbos!
WHAT IS A BOV?
Well, a blow-off valve is essentially a device that is placed before the TB and starts expelling air out to the atmosphere, or through a by-pass tube that goes back into the IM, in order to get rid of excess boost after letting out on the throttle.
That also means that a BOV can be used with a S/C, so basically, you can use a BOV with any FI.
Just wanted to clear that up.

What?
Look, I had to make this thread because today I saw that again on a thread. It was just too much. I am tired of the false information going around in this forum.

So I can use a BOV on my NON TURBO automatic? hahahahahah

i was wondering that too ?? lol

hell, if thats the case, ill buy a BOV and slap it into my CAI and be happy with that a lil longer and wont have to rush to get the turbo lol.

WTF LOL do you guys even read?
basically, you can use a BOV with any FI
FI = Forced induction
N/A < Forced induction
Therefore, N/A is not FI and you cannot use a BOV with N/A engines.... Comon... LOL
I mean that BOVs can be used with superchargers also, it seems that people are ignoring that here.
I was thinking fuel injection when you said FI lol.

Even electric S/C? Ha, had to throw that in.I never thought about having a BOV on a S/C engine. Thanks for the info, although i'll probably never hav a F/I engine

Yeah, even an electric S/C, lol :)
Though a bov would not work with an eaton S/C since the boost is built up after the TB plate.
Centrifuge S/C's do give you the ability to blow it off :)

im going to bo out and buy one of thos cheapy BOVs off of ebay and put it on my stock engine....thats going to be funny.....im going to get so much **** for that too. but it will be worth it.

Why the hell would you do that?
It wont make a sound.
Can you people read?
I said BOV valves work with any FORCED INDUCTION, just that it's not only exclusive to turbos.
Damn.... :)

I dont know of any FI guru who would say something like that, but good on you for swatting down their ignorance.

a centrifugal supercharger is pretty much a belt driven turbo right?

oo if i do the BOV this it is purely for comedy. im going to go up to the shop here and show it off. i plan on buying one of thos cheap universal SRIs from auto zone (just a bent piece of aluminum) cut a hole. put the cheapy BOV on there and put it on my car. might even try to make like a scoop in the BOV to try and the get sound altho it will kill my intake. what would be cool is if i could get it to make the sound. then i could sell if on ebay. im sure some 16 year old that know nothing at all aout there cars will buy them....lol. now time to look for parts...this is gunna be great.

BOVs won't make a sound unless there is pressure, and when there is suction rather than forced induction, there is no pressure, more of a lack thereof. I really wish the belt were in the front of the car or somewhere to better accomodate a centrifugal s/c.

i have a knak for making the pointless work...but for some reason i can never get anything usful to work. ill figure it out somehow. even if i have to make a ram air intake or something. ill find some way of getting the sound.

BOV = Bypass valve.
The Alpine S/C Kit that I had included a bypass valve.
It was machined into the body of the manifold s/c housing and it worked awesome, however it did not make any "psshhhh" sounds ...

I think what makes it funny is the total riceiness of the idea. Kind of like stickers which add 30WHP. Just be careful you don't hurt your car!

IT wont hurt his car.. it wont do anything...
the valve expells air from the charge pipes, so if you dont have boost it wont work :)

I'm getting a kick outta this... you're not gonna get enough pressure even if you're "ramming" air in at 100 mph into a 100 mph headwind to open up some sort of BOV and make any sort of hissing noise.
What you need to do is buy one of those electric superchargers and hook up a cheap low pressure BOV directly to the end of it and connect the on switch to your throttle.
Yeah, do that, and get a dyno before and after.....
BTW- for the idiot that PMd me with name calling and other BS, if you can't read into the sarcasm of this post, then you're a retard... you know who you are.

yea the electric supercharder ideas just ran threw my head. if i do get it i was thinking of just taking a pipe closing one end off. putting the E-S/C and putting the bov on the pipe cause i got a PM from evan and i was startting to think. this could save me time and probobly be cheaper in the end. then of course ill hook the E-S/C up to the car to try it out one day.but i do alot of high evne driveing and well yea i think that thing will cause me to lose power at highend.

Actually if you really wanted to have a bov sound on your n/a car it is possible. If you use the hks ssqv bov (which i have on my accent) it is a twin-piston bov. It does not operate like a normal bov, instead it operates off of pressure variation. Im not 100 percent sure it would work but I know I have it on my car and it releases vacuum , its actually kinda loud for only being vacuum as well. Just wanted to throw this in for the sake of the conversation ;-)
