I think the short little antenna looks out of place in the antenna location on the elantra. The short one would look ok on the roof, but that's a lot of work. If you're gonna go through the PITA of changing it to a power antenna, that'd be cool. I think it's more work than it's worth though.

Metra power antenna PW4422 is the answer. You can get it in silver or black mast. Audiooutfitter.com is the place to get it. I had Ultimate Electronics here in Vegas install it for me, and it works like a charm.

Mike,

Mine isn't like the little stubby one... Its about 1.8 ft tall and black rubber. It looks badass in my opinion since i mounted it at the same angle of the stock antenna....

I'll take pics when i get home from "work"

Man I don't even know where to start with that, but any car that comes with a bong can't be bad.

The Metra power antenna is the way to go. I got the same and with a little modification it fit perfect using the stock base. You can also find them at Circuit City.

From the Jay....when he was selling. It's OEM so there are no fitment problems. I think you can find them somewhere else, though. Not sure where....someone will probably provide a link.

yep spoilerdepot is awesome. That's where mine came from. You can find lower prices if you look at spoilerdepot's ebay auctions though. That's how I ordered mine. It was about $190 painted & shipped.

Is the wiring already in place or did you have to run it? Any adapters or anything else needed?

Yes and on the metra power antenna, how much does it run + install? :)

And does it just come up when you turn on the car? Or do you get to hit a switch? :)...personally id rather have a switch, had a retractable one on my 88 lncoln marK VII

Ultimate Electronics here in Vegas did mine when they installed my Pioneer deck. They charged me $50 to do it, and they had the deck and antenna installed in an hour, so it can't be that hard.. The antenna does not go up unless I have the radio on.

brian, i think the wiring is in place, but i'm not 100% certain on this one. the factory head unit's antenna switch-on lead is wired into the harness, so there's a wire that leads somewhere for certain. whether it terminates in the rear near the antenna or somewhere short of there i do not know. my gut instinct is that it's there. there is also 12V for the antenna motor that you can tap into from the hatch area light. so the only question really is whether the switch-on lead is present near the antenna.

Yes you can get power from any 12V source as long as the circuit can handle the amperage. Most aftermarket radios have a switched antenna source that you would have to run to the antenna. Cost for the antenna is about $60, installation is free.....do it yourself and save the $$$.

the hatch light circuit can handle the addition of a power antenna.

the switched antenna source from the head unit is just a trigger for the antenna. it can not handle any load. the antenna motor will get its power from the light circuit (or whatever circuit you tap into).

i think the main issue is, is the switched antenna source wire already run from the head unit to the trunk?

How are these motorized antennas? Some of them can get pretty loud. Are these brand pretty quiet?

I guess I'll have to take a look to see if the harness is there. I'll report what i find.

The wiring comes with the antenna. The car isnt wired for power antenna.

Here is a thread I pulled out of the archives on this. http://www.elantraxd.com/yabbse/index.php?board=8;action=display;threadid=5528 (http://)

I don't think there is a switched antenna wire factory wired to the trunk. I ran my own. So now it raises when the radio (FM/AM) is on and lowers when any other source is on (CD/XM) or when the HU is turned off.

2bit (or anybody else that has the same power antenna)-the antenna comes with the actual antenna lead that plugs into the head unit too, or is that a separate purchase?

I got rid of mine! I like the top roof mounted style on mercedes and audis and even VW. I will either go for a fish tail look or just a flat one and place it near the rear brake light. I just didnt like any antennas.

I'm trying to do the power ant install now on my 03 sedan. One pitfall of note so far is the screw that secures the antenna inside the trunk is really tough to get to. I'm drilling a hole there to allow my screwdriver to acess it. I'll keep you posted as far as progress/success/failures. Maybe even some pics.

Can I get a DUH?!? I guess I like to make things a bit harder than necessary...
Just noticed that the anchor bolt is an easily accessible removal about 4 inches lower than I was looking. The antenna is off, now comes the fun part of fishing wires.
