View Full Version : The PCV and TB bypasses
Hi!
Please take a look at my oil cath can ( for PCV line ) after
~ 6,000 km in cold russian winter ( ~ -30 degrees Celsius).
BTW I am driving with TB bypass in this winter without any problems.

I have the same kind of "mayonnaise" in mine... I am experimenting with 2 PCV catch cans : blue one between valve cover and Intake tubing, red one between valve cover and Intake Manifold... (BTW I have shortened the catch can tubing since this picture)

... the "mayonnaise" is only collecting in the red catch can (engine to IM) and I am also seeing some on my oil filler cap. The blue catch can is empty.. just a little brown colour in the filter.
I recently changed jobs and don't have to drive so far... the engine is only just warmed up by the time I arrive each morning. It is also Winter here in Nova Scotia Canada... with recent weeks/months in negatve celsius mostly.
If the car was older ('05) and I wasn't just doing short trips I might have seen this as a sign of a leaking cylinder head gasket... coolant mixing with oil... but in this case I'm pretty sure it is moisture/condensation mixing with the oil and not having a chance to burn off due to the short trips. I try getting out on the weekends so the car can stretch its legs.
TB bypass mod also without problem :)

all you need now for that engine bay are some nice blue wires for the plugs to really set the contrast in there!

check my thread on ESR Performance, there is a link to his store... the plugs/wires for the tib should work if there arent any for the XD2

I had the can set up between the intake and the crankcase breather (the blue setup), no catch at all. I just changed it to run from the PCV to the intake manifold (the red setup). Hopefully I'll catch something now.

I think i spent about $15 for each of my 2 catch cans, and i just empty the cans with every oil change. I cut out the filters and dont seem to have a problem. I think the filter was there to catch some of the bigger stuff that wouldn't be able to pass through the quick drain at the bottom of the can. BUt I just unscrew the can completely to drain it. Good luck!

yup, at Home Depot, and then a spool of 50 ft of hose was like $25, but I needed the hose for more than just this project

The Home Depot versions are designed as Air Dryers for compressed air systems. They have a filter for that reason. All you do is take it apart and unscrew the filter.
I've only done the Crankcase to Intake pipe, and I'm amazed at how much oil actually travels in that direction. I'm glad I did it.
