I just bought a performance air filter to put inplace of my stock airbox. I just attached it to my stock air tubing. It looks great and I havent started my car to hear and feel the difference. Um.... one problem, I forgot to unhook my battery. Is it absolutely important to unhook the battery or is it ok?

It won't hurt anything, but disconnecting the battery to reset the ECU is the optimum thing to do.

Sooner the better. All you need is a 10 mm box wrench or deep well socket. Takes not even five minute to pop the terminal, pump the brakesa couple times to drain the system, replace the terminal.
Might as well do it now.

Why do people keep suggesting that you should disconnect the negative terminal? All you need to do is take out the underhood fuse for a couple seconds then pop it back in. That way you don't have to reprogram your radio presets and clock...

Wait a second... were talking about an air filter like K n N why would you need to reset the ecu there really no hp gain Is there? When i first bought my car i put a k n N air filter in made no difference. Am i wrong?

In some cases, the ECU needs to adapt to the changes. If you reset the ECU, it does it from scratch. If you just drive the car, it adapts over time. If you've been driving yours for a while, there's not much point in resetting the ECU.

No i have a CAI now and i did reset the ecu but a thought a K n N type filter does nothing for hp gains just last longer ,cleaner air.

it is proven that the k&n not only last longer and gives cleaner air but it alson flows way better then stock that is where you can see gains it all depends on the intake system. i have seen people do a simple k&n and get just as much power as a short ram with out the k&n. it really depends on the car

No sorry your wrong. You wanna reset the ECU the right way by disconnecting the negative terminal and pumping the brake 5 times then connecting it again.
This whole ECU thing has been talked about since I was a member at the old XD.com. Do a search and you will find out PLENTY about it.

The K&N does allow more air flow (maybe 1hp) but cleaner air, come on. It allows more and much larger particles to pass thru than oem type paper filters. I took mine out because I felt no gains and 1hp is not worry dirtying up the engine oil. Look at this independent test:

I had a Mickey Mouse intake for about a year before I reset the ECU on my car. I felt a difference the first time I drove it after the resetting, but it could have just been my butt dyno.

You're funny. Do you have any proof to back this up? I do. I did a dyno where I just pulled the fuses for a second and guess what? The ECU did reset and I showed gains on the dyno!
