thats because the springs are too soft and your car moves too much in corners and bumps...
whats the offset??? i wanted to put in 5 mm spacers with my 45 offset and 215/40 tires...should have plenty of clearence especially considering how stiff the teins are...
i remember trying to roll my accents fenders...and they spidered the clear coat in the rear....o well...you better off just cutting the lip off and then repainting it

I'm lowered with springtechs and my 205/40/17 had plenty of clearance, enough so that I also wanted to upgrade to 215/45. Ilan how much is the drop rating on the sprints as opposed to the springtechs? You did have springtechs at one point correct? Now I'm nervous and maybe I'll stick with what I have already.

^ it really depends on the offset of the wheels...if you are greater than 42...than you will probably rub
gtboyva...what is the offset of your rim??
ilanpro
03-10-2006, 11:10 PM
Offset is 42mm
only1db
03-10-2006, 11:20 PM
then it probably has to do with the car leaning too much...you have the 18mm bar right?? it may be too much lean for the amount of lowering you have...because when i am slammed i have plenty of room with 45mm offset and a 215/40...a 45 series would not affect the rub...but rather the offset. hence why 205 work just fine...not as wide of a tire to rub on the fender when cornering or really big bumps

I will cut up the inside lip of the fender and get it over with, I might step up to eibach springs, the car is a commuter and cannot have it rub

ive seen them roll fenders at the body shop we use at work. they always use a heat gun and a bat to roll the lip. the heat gun heats the metal as well as the paint. so the fenders wont (or shouldnt) chip the paint when your bending the lip.
i kinda need mine rolled also. but i just added another * of neg camber past speck and problem solved. no more rub. i have about a finger space between the fender lip and the sidewall. they are really tucked under there. and i just put the summer wheels on today. so i checked out the clearance.

I've heard so many horror stories when using 17 inch rims and tires that im goin to be getting some 16 inch rims.

Even though tires are labeled as a particular size, I think there's quite a bit of difference in actual shape/size between one tire model and another.
When I had the Yokohama AVS ES100 installed, I noticed right away after the first big dip that I had rubbing issues. The Falken Ziex 512 I just got are also 215/45/17 and I expected it to rub just like the Yoko's, but so far after more than 3 weeks, I've yet to rub, even with 3 people in the car.
What kind of tires do you have Ilan?

215 tires on a 7.5 inch rim are also going to be slightly wider on the tread, slightly taller & significanly wider on the section (widest part of the tire).
Also, 215/45/17 tires are going to have a lot of variation. 215 tires can be as wide as 225 and as narrow as 205.

I STRONGLY disagree...i am dropped like 3 inches with the coils...i have NO rubbing issues at all...with 45mm offset and 1.2 negative camber...i have plenty of room to go to a 225! or even put in wheel spacers

We are talking about issues with them when the car is lowered. But even at that, when I had 205/45/17 on my old rims I rubbed in the back when I went over bumps when I had ppl in the back.

Your right man, it does haveto do with offset because on my 01 gls I had 17 inch volts that came with 205/40/17 tires and my springs where stock.. NO RUBBING.. Then I bought 205/45/17 tires and I rubbed with ppl in the back when I went over bumps. Then I had another set of 17's on my car with 205/45/17 tires and my springs where stock and I didnt rub with 3 ppl in the back when I went over bumps. So in a way it is about offset but no matter what 215 or 225 tire is the WRONG size tire to use on our cars.

hwo do you figure??? 215/45 R17 is the closest to stock diameter you can get...its slightly over...but not as much as a difference than with 215/40...
you can also have a wheel offset be more if you have really stiff coils...like the TEINS...they wheels barely move..also negative camber also is a factor as well.
ilan when you saw it i had 215's...there was no rubbing....

ITS ABOUT TIRE DIAMETER!!!!
not how wide...they are 205/40 is too small 205/ 45 is the same as 215/40 diameter wise....and its slightly too small...so 215/45 is the better choice...unless you like the extra Oomph from the smaller tire... :D

Calm down man.. 215/40 or 215/45 is NOT the way to go if you have a rim with a offset that will make it rub... Look at Ericbeck's issue for a example.

For the record, if you're mounting 215/45-17's here's the optimal setup, IMO...
17x7" wheels @ 42mm offset
Front camber: -0.5 degrees
Rear camber: -1.2 degrees
With that setup you should be able to run Eibach's or H&R's just fine without rubbing. I was able to use Eibach's with the setup above, except with 40mm offset. And I experienced 0 rubbing problems even with the car fully loaded. But to be safe, the 42mm offset should actually give you 2mm more clearance than I had.

1.2 deg camber puts the top of the wheel ~6.5mm further away from the fender. From here on we need to promote +45 & +48 offset when running 215/45/17
