: How does the K&N filter fit
HyundaiDude 03-15-2006, 11:36 PM Hello:
I had a very hard time putting in the K&N filter. In fact, I put the OEM Hyundai filter back in. I started to think that you have to put the filter into the box of the box and hold it in, and then move everything down into the box.
Does anyone have any special tips, because it isn't going in smoothly like the OEM filter.
This is a 2006 GLS.
Thank you VERY MUCH! :-)
Just give me anything you can

I had a K&N in my 01 GLS and it fit nice and snug then I sold the 01 and tried to put the same K&N in my 03 and it didnt fit right.. Are you sure its the right part number?
beeman 03-15-2006, 11:53 PM I think maybe you got the wrong model or something. It fits in quite well (heard from a friend who has it in his 2005 gls).
acarzt 03-16-2006, 01:47 AM is it a cone filter by chance?

Nah im pretty sure he has the panel filter to put in the OEM intake box.
fgummett 03-16-2006, 05:15 AM When I used a K&N Panel filter in the stock intake box for my '05 GT it was a very snug fit especially for the top of the box. As I recall it worked best when I put it in the top first and then lowered that whole assembly onto the bottom of the box. You shouldn't have to force the intake box clips
exsailor 03-16-2006, 07:32 AM I had to play around to get mine in on 04GT. It was a very snug fit getting the 2 rear tabs in. Took me about 10 mins to do it. :)
hyunelan2 03-16-2006, 08:20 AM I know with the XD the filter sits in there just like it was OEM - someone here who has both an XD and XD2 should compare the two filters for us.
fgummett 03-16-2006, 08:34 AM I think that because the K&N is built better (to last the life of the car) compared to the cheaper OE filter it is just a snug fit. Like I said with mine, if you put it first into the bottom of the intake box it would not just slip into the top of the air box when you tried to close it... instead I had to fit it into the top half first then slip that into the bottom half.. no biggie :)
HyundaiDude 03-16-2006, 10:03 AM Thank you:
I am going to go outside and try it, it just seems that if you install it from the top first that there is no way of confirming that the filter didn't bend in or basically go in wrong.
However, if it did go in wrong, the check engine light would probably go on.
thanks

thanks
I doubt it... unless you mess up the MAF somehow...
fgummett 03-16-2006, 11:42 AM However, if it did go in wrong, the check engine light would probably go on. ^^yup... I think what's more likely is that if it doesn't go in properly the box won't clip together easily, if at all.
menallychllngd 03-16-2006, 11:47 AM yeah even on other vehicles ive had it was always a snug fit. it fit but sometimes putting the box back together was a little tricky.
HyundaiDude 03-17-2006, 08:11 PM I can't get the filter in properly. I will try again. Damn K&N
fgummett 03-18-2006, 07:28 AM OK... perhaps you have the wrong part? Were did you buy it, any chance you can take it back to them to check?
One other thing just occurs to me... [I am not currently using the stock airbox with K&N as I have a custom SRI but] as I recall I also had to disconnect the intake tubing from the airbox top before putting it back on the airbox bottom... this gives you more freedom of movement rather than working against the flex of the tubing. Once the top is seated and clipped correctly you can work the tubing back on... you may have to loosen the clips/tubing all the way to the TB while not neccesarily taking it all off. This is easier when it is is warm.
HyundaiDude 03-25-2006, 09:15 PM My good friend just installed the K&N, twice, without putting it into the top of the air box first. He installed it in the same normal way the OEM filter fits. If you give it a little chutzpah, it seems to go in no problem.
Vampyrate 03-25-2006, 09:40 PM ^that is the first time that i have read yiddish here on any board that i am/have been a part of... that is awesome! i would love to learn yiddish and know a few words.
HyundaiDude 03-25-2006, 10:16 PM Be that as it may, I am now choosing not to respond to that responce.
YBKewl 03-29-2006, 03:56 PM I know with the XD the filter sits in there just like it was OEM - someone here who has both an XD and XD2 should compare the two filters for us.
I bout the filter in 2003 for my 2002 GT, before I traded my 2002 for a 2006, I took out the filter and it is now in my 2006. Same filter, no problem.
metalfetish 03-30-2006, 01:45 AM honestly I say take out the airbox and put a cone filter on the elbow, mount a bracket somehow and tada SRI. slightly ghetto-rigged, but it does the job for much cheaper.
