I have seen numerous reviews and specs that say the Elantra comes with a horsepower of: 138, 140 or 142 I have also heard that it comes with a HP of only: 102, 104 or 108 which is it?

.....

depends where youre measuring from

the crank - 138

the wheels - about 118-120

could be a little lower if you have an auto tranny as well

You should search for this, but, at the wheels, a stock elantra has approx 120hp for a manual trans and 108hp for a automatic trans (ballpark est.)

EDIT: damn you evan, got to post before me, haha

^ I could not agree more, though it would be dangerous for some to have more HP than it already has (i.e. old men driving the elantras).

The book that came with mine says 143, and in Korea they don't provide a figure for torque. I drove my mom's when I was in Canada the last time and it definitely feels more... tepid. :)

Ok, so I just verified what was written above on cars.com by researching the 2003 Elantra GLS with the Beta II engine and it does have 135HP!

Also on cars.com the specs for the 2003 Honda Civics are this
Available Engines:
115-hp, 1.7-liter I-4
117-hp, 1.7-liter I-4
127-hp, 1.7-liter I-4
160-hp, 2.0-liter I-4
85-hp, 1.3-liter I-4 (gasoline hybrid)

Available Styles
Choose a style to load Equipment & Specs data
Original MSRP
2dr Coupe DX $12,810
2dr Coupe HX $13,710
2dr Coupe LX $15,010
2dr Coupe EX $16,810
2dr Hatchback Si $19,000
4dr Sedan DX $13,010
4dr Sedan LX $15,210
4dr Sedan EX $17,060
4dr Sedan Hybrid $19,550

So that means my Elantra that I paid only $10,000 for brand new off the lot has a better warranty and more HP than most Honda Civics haha this just keeps getting better and better. :D

In Germany/Europe the Elantra comes with three engines:

1.6 with 107 horsepower
2.0 diesel with 113 horsepower
2.0 with 139 horsepower (2000-2003; since 2004 it has 143 hp)

In Europe, horsepower is alway measured from crank...

I think the 2.0-liter engine has enough power for normal riding. But for me, it also could have much more... Thinking about supercharger... :D

The only issue with that with Hyundai is that in 5 yrs, that Honda could have twice the mileage, and still be worth more than the Hyundai.

AND youre not taking into consideration that 2.0 vs 2.0 the honda has 160 to the elantra 135. comparing a 1.7l honda to a 2.0l elantra doesnt make sense. and like stated, in 5 years that honda will be worth more than an xd brand new in 2003

Hyundai resale has gotten better over the years. And Honda... getting more expensive every year. If Hyundai stays on target, I think it could over take Honda in sales in.. 5-8 yrs.

Back on topic:
When I started this thread I was more about comparing the values as a car one of them being how much HP for your money not comparing engines or what people think they're worth. For what I paid for my Elantra I couldn't have bought a Civic and if I bought their least expensive Civic it still has less HP than my Elantra and less of a warranty. In my opinion the Elantra is a better value.

Yes for $9000 more I could have bougt a Honda Civic Si with a 2.0 I4 that has 20 or so more HP than my Elantra.

What I was thinking when I chose the Elantra over the Civic Si was what can I buy with $9000? The warranty was far better and of course the price was as well.

So what if Hyundai had/has a bad rep. a lot of that bad rep. came from when people bought the excell and it was so cheap that they didn't care about having routine maintenence done or couldn't afford to have it done.

I also chose the GLS over the GT because I don't like the way hatchbacks look although my mom has a GT and it is way more functional. Another factor for my buying the GLS over the GT was that many of the options that I would have to pay more for I planned to replace with better aftermarket parts ie. the rims, the seats, the suspension etc..

i think youre a bit mistaken here. you want to know what you will get with the civic si you wont ever see on an elantra?

197hp n/a
LSD
18" wheels (i believe)
6 speed transmission
aftermarket support

Actually the 2003 Civic Si has 160HP (cars.com) and most everything that the civic has can be bought for my Elantra for the up to $9000 difference I saved.

I rather have my slow hyundai with a 10 year warranty. **** honda

known reliability > warranty

everyone knows a honda will last 200, 250, 300k miles with regular maintenence (sp?) i like my car, but if i had the money, i wouldve bought a honda just for the fact that i know it will not die before i get sick of it and will hold its value

your elantra will run for 200k+ miles as well with regular maintenance. Leviathant is doing well, 4mynikka is trying to get high mileage as well...it's not hard.

There was a link on here about the Indian man in Mississagua who had his 95 accent up to a million kms. It's not hard to do, just take care of your car.

F-yeah I'd rather have my Hyundai Elantra over a Honda Civic any day.

I could have afforded a Civic but I'm with you guys F*ck Honda Civics.

A Civic modded, come on who hasn't seen that before they're a dime a dozen but my modded Elantra turns heads.
People tell me it's nice to see something different and hardly anyone recognizes my car as an Elantra due to my many mods.
When I tell them it's an Elantra they are suprised to say the least.

In my opinion the Elantra is way undervalued.

I love my Elantra.

I'm absolutely with you, SLVR2003!

In germany, the Elantra is very rare, I guess way more rare than in the US, and because of that, my car turns heads although it's nearly stock...
Modified Civics or VW Golfs (in germany) you see everywhere, but an Elantra...

I love my Elantra!

The only reason you guys are hating on honda is because we all drive hyundais and it seems people with hooked up hondas look down on hooked up hyundais, I know its bull*hit but it doesnt bother me because my hyundai is a great car with a great warrenty. When it comes down to it hondas are great cars also that have very few problems in the 200,000 plus miles they will last.

My car: 2002 Elantra GT (used @ 34K mi. price paid: $6,450)
Wife's car: 2002 Civic EX (price paid: $15,600)

Gotta love Hyundai resale values if you buy them used.

My car is faster but her car gets better gas mileage. For '02 Civic models Honda put overly firm struts for an econobox. The car though stays nice and flat when driven hard. Besides that her car is SLOWWW except for the rare occasion when VTEC kicks in.

Actually my main reason for disliking the Modded Honda Civics is that they're way too common, not so much that I'm bitter because people don't understand what a great car Hyundai makes at a great price.

I almost hope people don't discover what a value the Elantra is because then we might have to start paying what they're actually worth.

I think I'll actually be taking advantage of the low resale value myself soon. I'm going to buy a used Tiburon and give the Elantra to the wife. By the time I do give it to her I will have put around $4000-$5000 into it! Needless to say it'll be tough letting go of it.
