Is is possible to reprogram the computer (or sweet talk a garage into doing it) for a different tire size so to elimate the error introduced by changing to non oem tire? I know it's possible to do with pickups and suvs, but not necessarily with the Elantra.

I wouldn't mind switching to 16", but it seems to be difficult to find a good selection of tires locally at the 205/50R16 size and will likely stick with the 15" anyway mostly due to cost of switching rim sizes too.

As long as you keep the outside diameter of the tire the "same" then the difference will be minimal.
you can +0 your 15s and go 205-55-15, but you can't go much wider on stock steelies, maybe 215-50-15 on GT alloys.
There are tons of tire size calculators e.g.
http://elantragtclub.tripod.com/elantra/id201.html
and if you calculate, most +0, +1 or +2 sizes are less that 2% different than OEM, and your speedo is off by more than that, easily...

The easy answer is NO. Noone in the US has the code cracked to reprogram Hyundai ECUs.

If you keep the outside diameter the same, there will be NO difference.

I had "same" in quotes cuz it's almost impossible to get the exact same outside diameter going +0, +1, +2 etc... but the difference is generally minimal. That's what I meant by "same".

I am running 215/40 17s and check my speedo before and after with my GPS unit. Dead on before and plus half a mph at speeds from 0-70 and plus 1mph over that. I think.. either way it was within factory specs (according to the service manual).
