View Full Version : Should I remove window tape?

I was looking at the door frame and saw a chip in the tape on the d/s tape.It only affected the tape and not the paint under it.
Should I replace the tape or remove it from all doors completely?
Yay or Nay

You can remove the tape HOWEVER there might not be a good finish on the paint under it, let aloner a clear coat. Really depends if your car was a friday car or not LOL

Thats the only thing im concerned about.I'll attempt to replace the tape and if there is a good finish i'll take em all off.I really can't afford downtime of my car to get 4 little pieces painted up

Well painting is the best "long" term solution since the new tape will eventually fall off like the first.

i took mine off, and it looked like **** underneath. having a dark(er) color car, yours might too. take a look at ALL of the doors at the very bottom where the weather stripping meets the window tape. find the SMALLEST amount of rippling in that window tape on all four doors, take it to the dealer, and theyll replace it. mine did it @ like 55k or so, but they didnt do the drivers side, took it back a couple days later, and they tried to give me a bunch of **** saying they shouldnt have and its only covered under the 30k paint warranty. after about 2 weeks, me letting the manager of the dealership know that the district manager better be calling me immediately, he called back and claimed that the DM said to go ahead and fix it. do a search for window tape and someone posted a pic that trim and emblems fall under the 60k warranty, so dont let them dick you around

My local dealer wont replace the tape.... they send them to the paint shop.

mine didnt replace the tape either. they removed the passenger side and painted it. when i went back, they tried to say it was under the paint warranty. i asked them why since its not a paint issue, its tape. they said because they fix it with paint, thats why it goes to that warranty. i told them how much BS that is, and its not my fault how they fix it. hell, i wouldnt have cared if they put new tape down as long as it wasnt coming up anymore, and they still refused to do anything. thats when i started calling the DM and HC

mine got off while I was taking the Sun Visors off
huge chunks of tapes came out on both Passenger and Driver's side (only front for some reason) and the paint underneath it got scratched, real bad
but since my Elantra is back, its hard to see it
I called my dealer and they said bring in the car so that they can replace the tape or something
I'm just waiting for about 2,000KM more gas milege so that I can do it when I'm getting my 2nd service

i just got done removing all of the window tape, and the paint is beautiful underneath!, and i have a midnight gray(purple) color. i love the look it has now! i really easy trick i did was use a a handheld butane torch to heat up the tape, then it just comes right off! a little more heat on the glue residue, and bam!, gone! it looks sooooo much better now!!

Mine on the front windows is bad, this is something I've been thinking about for a while. I don't know what to do. The last two times I went to the dealer I meant to have them fix it but I have forgotten (I even have the TSB printed out in my car). And I only go to the dealer about every three months, so it'll be a while until I get back again.

I don't know what to do.

I have the same issue and was going to attempt this as well, but my only concern is the rubber on the little rear window surround, that may look like poo! I have this chipping all over the place and its an eye sore. Anyone got pics of the end state of tape removal?

Well I think tomorrow we shall see what it looks like.I got a heatgun in my tool box.Whats the worst that can happen,i'll have to either replace the tape or have it painted

i ran out to get some picks even though its getting dark. as for the litttle window in back, just pop the inside of the door off, theirs a 10mm siaed bolt, and a philips screw under the seal on top, and pull the channel out, and the window comes right out! id pull down all the weatherstrip from around the frame, as it is only pressed in place. AND USE SOME HEAT, LIKE A HEAT GUN OR A SMALL HAND HELD BUTANE TORCH! the tape will just fall right off, and you wont hurt the paint, either.

So it's all clearcoated? How many miles does your car have?
I have 18000 so fade really shouldn't be an issue.
Looks nice though

maybe thats why mine turned out so ****ty. i had to replace 2 doors from a wreck about 2 months after i got it all fixed, and now im out of warranty. looks like ill be trying this on the drivers side soon. i figure if it doesnt turn out good, rattlecans will be my friend for the day

Wish I would have saw this because I successfully took mine off over 2 years ago. I even made a thread for it. But yeah, there is 100% factory fresh paint under the tape just as the rest of the car looked on the show room floor. You just have to use a heat gun or hair dryer so that the stickiness comes off easier. It also helps if you do it on a hot sunny summer day.

For the TSB, just sign up for www.hmaservice.com (if you don't get a verification email use the Forgot Your Password link). Then you should be able to navigate through there and find the TSB. If not, look at the DIY in the DIY forum (not section) and it should give you some help!

Good luck.

Ok heres some pics.Be warned they are not too pretty. When I removed the tape I found out that Hyundai is now scuffing up the paint to make it stick better. Now I have to take the car to our bodyshop to have the doors wetsanded where the tape was.Just a small minor set back but oh well.I think it will look good when it is 100% finished

When mine was peeling for like the 3rd time and I was getting fed up of going to hyuindai and having them put new tape on so they decided they where gonna send my car to a auto body shop and have the tape in this area http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=4564 removed and they painted it flat black, it came out great and you cant even tell the difference between the remaining tape around the doors and the painted area.

Ok,my car is goin into the bodyshop tomorrow to have the door frames wet sanded and buffed out. They said it should be ok but they are worried about the frame being so small that the paint might get burnt by the buffer.I pray that they can do this right without having to paint anything.

Well, the older xd's had a problem with the tape coming off.I don't know if it was because they didn't prep it correctly or what.I tried to buff it out with no avail.I had it wetsanded and buffed today.I dunno, some people on here with xd's have had some problems with appearance while others have had a perfect finish. You will only know when you start to take it off

The paint under the tape was OK it was kinda scratched and there was alot of glue on it but since my buddy offered to paint it for free I figured what the hell.
