Sooooooo me and my friends from lincoln tech decided to go to E-town the other day. Originally we were going to have all sorts of cars there but everyone chickened out except me (05 Auto Elantra GLS) and my friend mike (90-something 5spd Civic Si Sedan).

We get down there, we pay, stage, line up and race against each other twice. Then I ran against a camaro for my third run

for all 3 of these slips,

Temp F. 58
Absolute Barometer 29.91
My Car Weight 3106 (with driver, weighing 220lbs)
His Car Weight 2900 (with driver, weighing 200lbs)
Now, here is run #1

Si Elantra

R/T ... .090 .320
60' ... 3.323 2.568
330 ... 7.673 7.367
1/8 ... 11.112 11.348
MPH ... 71.39 63.01
1000... 14.055 14.720
1/4 ... 16.547 17.573
MPH ... 90.00 78.14

this run was with the shifter in Drive, and me power braking from ~2200rpm. He found out later that he has a bad motor mount, because it popped out of first gear. Notice how I got off the like alot faster than he did? Boy was I happy until the second run.

Si Elantra

R/T ... .031 .329
60' ... 2.496 2.557
330 ... 6.722 7.308
1/8 ... 10.128 11.262
MPH ... 72.05 63.38
1000... 13.048 14.616
1/4 ... 15.519 17.456
MPH ... 90.75 78.57

This is with him not giving a crap about his synchro by holding the shift lever in 1st :D I power braked at 1500rpm this time, and this run was right after the first so my IM was much hotter.

Camaro Elantra

R/T ... .151 -.020
60' ... 2.017 2.514
330 ... 5.570 7.197
1/8 ... 8.479 11.105
MPH ... 84.31 64.12
1000... 11.020 14.426
1/4 ... 13.199 17.250
MPH ... 103.08 79.13

This run surprised me. I had about an hour of cooldown time, and I don't have an IM spacer, PLUS a warm air intake. But somehow I was able to balance the engine being warm and the IM being not-burning-hot-to-the-touch-like-the-other-runs. I power braked at 1500rpm for this run too. BUT WHAT I DID DIFFERENT.....I left the shifter in LOW! I don't know if it's because of the new TCU in the 05+ or what, but by leaving it in low, I was able to get an extra 200-400rpm out of the motor on shifts. It would redline in 1st without bouncing off the limiter, and the TCU would be like "OHH #$!!@ he doesn't want me to shift, but I can't redline, so I'll give him the middle finger and shift anyway"....into second....then into third...and remember the shift level is still in L, I never touched it. I could actually hear the motor shift higher and HARDER...a bigger torque KICK when it went into the next gear. Definatly something to look into. Oh, and I redlighted. B*stards.

All in all, I am very disappointed. My 01, which was spitting oil, and a bad transmission, could run a 17.1, but my 05, 34k on the motor, with a warm air intake AND a catback could only run 17.2 right after cooldown? Bullsh!t. So I went home and ordered a CAI and it's on it's way.

Questions, comments? Feel free.

not to mention that was the first time I had ever ran the car or raced in my entire life. I was so damn nervous. LOL I might have to try that racing in L gear. stuff

I thought reece ran a 17.2

either way, im glad you said this
All in all, I am very disappointed
because if you didnt, i was going to

and jim is right. manual > auto. you have a feat ahead of you if youre still shooting for that 14.whatever time you were talking about the other day. boosted or not, 2.5 seconds is a lot of time to take off in a 1/4 mile

When I had my 01 and I tried the L gear this it would bounce off the rev limiter in 1st. I don't know what year they changed it in.

i at least want to get up to 90 when i do a 1/4, i dont care about times... i just want to be able to get closer to the trip. digits on runs... so much modding needed for that :(

I just found my stock time slips from my 05, last year at Atco w/ ilan and everything.

WTF
I ran 17.2 stock!?!?
Ok, that's it. I can't wait for the CAI to come in. Something is wrong with my car too. I think there is something clogged in the magnaflow causing excessive backpressure (it's a dual tip but it only comes out one side....cover that side and it still doesn't come out the other). And the injector pulse width is WAAAYYY too rich. God%@#@! now I need to do some research.

actually keyan, after I finish this exhaust, and get my lightweight wheels, I wanna go to level10 in NJ and get my torque converter redone. I think 2 guys on here have them, but theyve never raced them at the track. But say that it a huge difference. No added hp, but the auto shifts at high torque points like a manual.

i wouldnt mind running against reece and jimbo... though i know i would get my arse kicked against jimbo since im still a 5spd n00b

ArunSenior04
04-03-2006, 09:10 PM
Yea I was amazed at that 17.2 stock. But to be quite honest, Im pretty damn sure I could hit a 17.0/1 before I started this exhaust. I ran with my bald kumhos and 3/4 tank of gas. Evan also gave me a few tips to help me out. If I go again this 21st, Ill make sure to rotate my tires, 1/4 tank of gas, and get all my junk out of my car.

You do know weather/track conditions can throw your times off by,.. alot. My accent was everywhere from 16.8-17.3 depending on the night I raced. Same 60ft times and all....

evan938
04-03-2006, 09:17 PM
good luck. the evo does the 1/4 mile in 13.9-14.2 (14.2 was from car and driver) at 98-103mph traps (again, 98 from car and driver)

and i wouldnt mind a race against jimbo and ford either :D:D:D:D

the evan vs. jimbo battle will be settled in june

im planning on a catback, CAI, and a few tranny upgrades... but most likely exhaust first since it will be less than clutch and flywheel combined... that and i would need help installing the clutch.

evan938
04-03-2006, 09:31 PM
unless you know someone that knows what they are doing, take your clutch to a shop. its too easy to mess up

Cypher
04-03-2006, 09:33 PM
despite my stupid little mistake with the clutch install it wasn't that difficult.. just takes time... i'm pretty sure i could do it again this time being the one leading it.

well, looks like i may be asking around when i get it in... might even hit up jimbo sometime this summer :)

Flat side toward the flywheel

Ok guys, back on topic please.

Even though the tracks were different, the barometer and temperature were about the same. What do you guys think is wrong with my car? :( lol

i dont know if its the car so much as its you...lol. you bought an automatic elantra (knowing how slow they are from your last one) and tried to drag race it. you have 2 options. spend 10k building the motor and transmission or trade it in for a 5 speed

ArunSenior04

well, its a stretch, but since you are cursed with an auto... remap the ecu or reset the battery to get a little more out of the engine

evan938
04-03-2006, 09:44 PM
accents arent that slow. trust me. my buddy has an 03 1.6l accent, we raced, i bogged a little, he outjumped me by a car, and the whole time i had my front bumper at his rear. those things are so light, itll hold up with an xd. all i had at the time was SRI and exhaust and GT wheels

lol asshole... like i'm going to put the pressure plate on backwards!!! umm its an auto... maybe try launching at higher rpms when powerbraking... lightweight rims and sticky tires...

^ that seems similar to why so many people modify the CRX with the newer honda 4 cyl. the car is so light that even with the slightest mod, you can reach impossible gains when compared to our elantras.

Yea,I know how quick they can be.I wanted to get a Accent at one point but didn't.They weigh like 200 or so lbs lighter than the Xd's

evan938

and he meant the clutch flat side down. not the pressure plate. its hard to figure out...we had to look like 4x when trying to install mine

When I was at school, a teacher took a temperature sensor to my IM and filter to show how hot the air is that the engine is taking in. 120*F. with the hood open !!! With a cold air I'll be pulling in 60 or 70*F. That's why I'm switiching and it'll help me there.

oh and evan. Shove it :D

bah. the clutch disk itself isn't hard to figure out the oreintation. i assumed he was trying to call me dumb or something about putting the pressure on the wrong way. but then again i doubt anyone could really do that unless they were really stupid since then the TO bearing wouldn't snap onto it at all hahaha.

OdessitPashka
04-09-2006, 11:58 PM
What's the altitude of the track? You got your stock times at Capitol, which is almost at the sea level.

Evan, to your comment about evos trapping 100mph, they are AWD cars and will always trap lower than FWD and RWD car on street tires.
