I got them today, and I think they are going to work just fine. It's not dark yet, so I don't know fully, but I can already tell that I am going to have some hot-spots. I don't think it will be nearly as bad as the other ones, but we'll see tonight. I'll post pics later.
Edit: Here are the pics. There are still some small hot-spots, but nothing to horrible. I think that Superlumination.com is fixing to be really busy!
Enjoy!

would you be able to take an even more close-up picture?
Also, how many of each bulb (are other bulb types needed?) is needed to do the complete color change?
THANKS AGAIN....carpeting pics to come in a week

It took a total of 7 bulbs. 4 of the 194's and 3 of the 73's total. I will try a closer pic tonight, my digi cam doesn't like no light pics. I'll try.

Where did you get those bulbs? I heard those bulbs are available at any auto store...is this true? I am interested in purple.

Very nice. One question though, do you think that the 194 Wedge LED's would fit in the 3 spots on the HVAC? Could you try it and let us know? If so then it'll be easier then the LED conversion that was created a while back.

What did you have to do to get those in? Did you have to solder anything, or is it just pull out/snap in?
I want!

No, the HVAC's are not 194's
Keyan, all I had to do was pull the old bulbs out and put these in. It's as easy as that. No soldering, no cutting, no nothing. Just make sure you put them in with the correct polarity.

hmmmm...i really dont want to have hot spots...I might just go for blue replacement bulbs....
any advice on opening the cluster to change out the bulbs?

07-10-2004, 01:38 AM
Trust me, I have tried the whole colored bulb thing. It doesn't work for crap. The only problem is, you can't see a damn thing. It is really easy to change the bulbs, just remove the cluster, and twist the bulb out of the back. Took me a total of 15 minutes to change everything. And the bright spots are not that bad at all, as you can see from the pics.

That's what i'm hoping for - Plus i'm also going to do the needle mod so they are also blue
Just not too sure on how to do it though - waiting for carbon to PM me with some details

That might be tough with our cars. There is really no way to get a bulb back there to light just the needle. You would have to do like others have done and remove the needles and scrape the orange paint off of the back. I don't know how well I like that idea though. I kinda like having the contrast on my gauges though. (helps when you are trying to push the car at night)

07-18-2004, 01:50 AM
Hehe next time remember to put fuel (gas you call it isn't it) in your car and you won't have to push it :D
j/k i know what you mean
You have point about the contrast maybe i might be better leaving that way
Have bit of time to think about it anyway as BROS guages will be here in prob around 2 weeks (need to wait till i have more $$$ in paypal)

What type of bulbs are under the needles in the cluster?
I think I have to replace those too :(
hyunelan2
07-18-2004, 11:20 AM
There aren't any specifically dedicated to the needles. They share the same lighting as the rest of the cluster. 194 and 74 bulbs are needed for the cluster. It won't change the color of the needle, however, since it is the reflection off the red/orange paint on the needle itself. To change the needle color you actually hve to remove the needle, scrape the paint off the back of it, and repaint what color you would like it to be (paint only the back of the needle, not the whole thing)

07-18-2004, 11:43 AM
Ok, good. :) I'm not looking to change the color of the needles, just that when I burnt out my cluster, the needles went out too... and they gotta work to read the gauges, ya know :)
EDIT:---for the type 74, are you people buying the LED or incadensent? we want LED, right?

Ok, I have an 01GLS and I only found that I need 3 194's, and TWO 74s. There were only 2 74's covered in green plastic, so I only replaced those. And my cluster still DOESNT work so I'll be posting in the Help! forum in a moment...

Did you put the LEDs in backwards perhaps? They only work one way, unlike 'normal' light bulbs.

I just wanted to verify the number of bulbs i needed before ordering anything.... also, I was wondering if anyone had pictures of this done on a 01-03 GLS...
I also had another idea.... do you think i could just take the green "condoms" off the bulbs and put a blue gell on the back of the guages.... i've never taken the cluster apart and not sure what it's like... also wondering if something like this would work for the hvac too.... it would be alot cheaper than getting the bulbs, and avoid the hotspots the led 194's have...
and nobody answered my question about how many bulbs are in the cluster of a 01-03 gls...

4 194's in the 01-03 GLS and 2 74's. I used the 100 degree LEDs and the suck. I'm going to buy Polarg no-fade reds and I'll let you know how those work. They should give good bright even color since they are not leds. For the 74's I'll be using bulb condoms. Bulb condoms on the HVAC work okay for the top three lights, but the two dials end up an orange color. It's because the icons have a greenish tint to them.
Also, if you want to get rid of that green gear light on the autos on the gauge cluster, you'll have to pry out a small strip of colored transparency that overlays them behind the clear part of the gauge cluster assembly.

I guess that's why everybody is going to the trouble of using LEDs on the HVAC..... That's exactly what I wanted to know... Thanks!

Do a search... they are all over the place. Cheapest place I've found is lightlens.com. They are called "no fade" bulbs on that site.
