Kind of like a cars final rites after an accident or something. Use this thread to give your car their final farewells and a place where they can live forever in the forums. Plus it will give members a place to find past cars without having to search through huge amounts of past posts.

I still miss you til this day. All the blood, sweat, and tears that I put into you was not wasted. Thank you for all the good times. I just knew that if you were going out like you did that you would take that stupid Jeep Cherokee down with you, too. Good job, 'Miss Elizabeth.' I'll see you on the flip side.

50,000 miles of fun driving
. . . Suspension/Wheels - Eibachs, Tibbie rear antisway, KORE front strut bar, camber bolts, Enkei Zoku 17-inch, Nitto 215/45/17, McGards (2 sets), EBC brakes.
. . . Body - Not one door ding, heavily waxed, glistening Obsidian black, Obsidian black grille, PIAA driving lights, mesh grille, OEM high spoiler, KDM clear corners, PIAA XtremeWhites/Raybrig bulbs, niteshades taillights, debadged except for GT on front fenders.
. . . Interior - SR gauges, RadioShack LEDs in dash, Alpine 9833, Infinity speakers, Infinity amp w/12-inch sub, B&M shifter, Tibbie pedals, Clifford Matrix alarm, GT mats, (not installed KDM chrome door handles).
. . . Engine - Blue powdercoat CAI with K&N RU3570, Blue powdercoat KORE front strut bar, engine cover sanded smooth painted Duplicolor MetalCast with matching blue caps for bolts, blue anodized oil and powersteering caps, Mobil 1 since infancy.
Dec 12, '04 11 AM Overcast, wet, v-e-r-y windy morning. Driving home from morning (Christmas) shopping, taking shortcut along winding country road. Unusually windy day (40+ mpg gusts). Lots of blowing debris, leaves, small branches. Suddenly windshield breaks - not crack, but break like a baseball bat hitting it - in the middle of the windshield right in front of the steering wheel. Loud POP as it hits . . . can't see out windshield . . . nerves shot . . . bowels empty . . . slam on brakes . . . right tires in gravel . . . car oversteers sideways . . . front end of car goes into 2-foot ditch (passenger right front hitting . . . airbag blows . . . remaining bowel contents empty . . . car spins around . . . head hits side window . . . hands break off both wiper and headlight stalks, car pops out of ditch, ending up on its wheels, facing the wrong direction on the road.
Eventually stumble out of car, chest and crotch hurt from seat belt, head has large 'knot' on it from side window . . . then slip and fall into ditch, roadrashing leg. Another car that was behind incident stops, said they saw a 10-ft branch from fir tree break off, just as car was going by.
Damage: hard hit on front right, hard enough to break motor mounts and crease firewall. Passenger door un-openable. Drivers front tire blown, damage to drivers side fender and door (scraping when 'exiting' ditch). Drivers air bag popped (not passenger side - 'smart' bags??), both stalks beside steering wheel broken off, windshield, drivers side mirror busted.
Towed (FREE) courtesy of Hyundai Roadside warranty
$10,200 damage.
Totaled.
Took everything non-stock that was 'removable' off the car . . . including most of the items listed above . . . non-coverage for these improvements due to insurance not notified (read - charge more in premiums) of additions.
After discussion, Insurance Company pays $8241 (Loss was $8491, minus $250 comprehensive deductible)
Replacement vehicle shopping begins . . .

Yep,
I was involved in a Hit and Run on Friday night (3/11). This woman in an 84 Ford Temple smack my front driver side fender and I had to drive my car into a ditch. The woman drove to a bar down the street and ditched the car. The cops where looking for her with their helicopters. My car was un-drivable.
She looks bad. The car is in the storage yard right now and it is being towed to a paint and body shop for some estimates. I hope that it is not totaled. It could be. I will try to take some pics of it and post them on here.
The car was towed to the autobody shop and the first estimate was $5500.00 and it still might get totaled. This sucks. We shall see what happens.
Here are some pictures of it:

Started as my dad's work car. Then I got it and my brother got the Altima. Brother killed the Altima Dec. '03. He got the Elantra, I got a GTP. Yesterday he did the exact same thing as last time. Followed too close, ran up under one, and pushed it into the one ahead.

02 GLS, 35k miles, totalled it like a month ago 2/11/05. I have some pics but ill need to scan them. But now my mom bought a new 05 GLS at the same dealership so we got a nice price. Im currently stuck with 94 ford escort 108k miles, so I'll get something new after that dies and some savings, probably another xd since theyre really cheap now and i love the bodykits for them.

18 year old girls should not be driving sports cars. She had a Dodge Laser, modded. It was her brothers or something. Nice car tho...but she wrecked my XD, and all I could afford after the insurance settlement was the Jeep. (they payed my loan off tho) Which was nice of them...or not.

Sorry everyone about the picture size.
FFS? What does that mean?
Spent all of yesterday outside, working on it. We managed to bend everything back into shape, the damage wasn't as bad as it looked. Replaced the hood, headlight, bumper support, couldn't find a new front bumper so we had to rig up the old one.

Can you resize the pictures? Just resize them on your computer and upload them to the same location. I would suggest resizing by about 1/4 to 1/3.

wow, I saw that you had posted in this thread and really worried that something had happened. Too many posts in this section now, so maybe we should all keep it to the actual obituary eulogys now so that we don't have to sit anxiously waiting for the thread to show the newest post, wondering if in fact the last person to bring this thread up actually did wreck their car...

Well the important thing about this thread is that you have to be alive to post in it... so perhaps even if your elantra gets totalled, its always good to look back and know that you're alive.

It was 11:30am. I was driving home to surprise my fiancé and take her out to dinner. As I was turning off of 58-alt to get to rt. 81, this stupid (explitive deleted) stopped her truck for no reason and I had no where to go but into her. I was 3 car lenghts back, looking at a road sign for direction, and I just slid into her. I think my car is totalled. The radiator is pretty much bent in half on top of my engine. CAI is not a crimped piece of meta, I have no grille, headlights, or any lighting other than the side markers for that matter. Not to mention I can't even see over the hood from the driver's seat. And good luck trying to open the driver's side door (I had to climb out through the window) and the tranny... don't even think about it. I had to kick the shifter into park so I could get my keys back, and then, I couldn't shift out of park so the guy could tow it. I showed pics to a friend of mine that works the parts department at a local hyundai here at home and he damn near fainted, so I know it may be bad. On monday, I have to find a way to pull out everything that I can, including the lowering springs and keep it all in my room until I get another Elantra (I refuse to go anything other than Elantra, or Tiburon... but mainly I want another Elantra. 5-Door this time).
I will get pics up when I get back to school, but it looks bad.
I'm sorry for wasting your time with this meaningless piece of webspace, but I seriously think that a piece of me has died as of 11:30am yesterday morning.

okay, take the pics of your car, and reattach the bumper (as if nothing had happened to it) and push the hood further up and you have my car (only champagne and with stock steelies), that is what mine looked like. like i said in the first post, i had to climb out of the driver side window to get out, but there is no visible damage to that side of the car as far as where the door is.
what gets me is that the airbags didnt go off, my bumper was against her rear tires.

sorry to hear that vamp. your air bags didn't go off??
wow. i ran over a big *** construction brick or material or w/e on the freeway doing about 70 mph because the dumbass truck driver didn't tie it down right and it fell off his truck which was slightly ahead of me on my right side. the moment i ran over it, air bags popped up. the rad support was bent oh so slightly and my exhaust pipe was dented but EVERYTHING else was fine. insurance quoted about 1500, 800 of which was the air bag (couldn't find any on ebay or junkyard). i remember thinking how freaking sensitive these air bags are.
well. hopefully your car isn't totalled. best of wishes to you.

most cars and especially those that have been lowered will have airbag problems....most often when going up agains trucks and SUV's....
I ate galant bumper in my accident... the grille and top of the bumper taking most of the brunt of it....the airbag sensors are mounted lower on the bumper support areas I believe...

Theoretically speaking, the car i showed is exactly what Vamp wanted in his car. It has all the same features, plus 5sp and wheels with only 45K miles (meaning Powertran warranty until ?/06; maybe already up tho.)
Its gonna be super hard to find a 5Sp hatch, let alone a white one, in a $4700 budget. Unless your willing to get a monthly bill.

I know, sorry...I was just joking around. I personally like the GLS better anyway, no offence to all those GT guys (And girls) out there. Well, apart from the rear drums bit.
maybe we should continue this new discussion about vamp's situation in a different (and perhaps new) thread...so we don't clutter the obituary

its not a safety issue in the country itself, but they have more regulations for safety here if i remember right, the NHTSA or whatever it is has different standards here than the department that controls cars up in america's hat.

I guess i can add a post in here...not my car, but my brothers 01 XD just got totalled out a few days ago...he rear ended someone, pushed the headlights in, grill trashed, hood came up a little bit, bumper probably done....then someone rearended him, bumper trashed, pushed in so the trunk lid sits 3" behind where it usually goes down to, quarter panel bent on pass side...looks like theres 1300$ more in damage then what the car is worth
worst part? he bought it used and my dad didnt get gap insurance...now theyre going to try to go after the woman who hit him, since, if she didnt caus the damage then it wouldnt be totaled

1. There are no pics... but here is the story:
It was 3am last night and me and a buddy of mine were leaving a hookah bar over in Sterling, VA and decided to take some back roads back to Leesburg. We were doing the speedlimit of 35mph (which I know the road really well, so could of gone faster, thank god I didn't). We were coming around a turn, then I saw it. A huge male deer. I swerved to miss it and made the stupid mistake of over correcting. We slammed into a tree doing 35. The impact was so hard, that the bumper was lying next to the tree, along with the inside of my grille while the rest of the car spun around and faced the other direction.
It ripped off the side markers and fog lights from the wiring. Couldn't open the passenger door, Radiator and mounts were ****ed, car will turn over, but not start, the passenter headlight is smashed and missing (i have no clue where that went) and all the oil drained onto the road.
At this point, I never want to drive again. And I swear to God (if there is one), if you guys flame me in any way, you will be sorry (**** this personal attack ****, I'm not in the mood for it).

yeah, it looks a lot worse than my sedan.
no airbag deployment, and that kind of worries me. if i hit the tree hard enough to spin around, the bags should of gone off. the impact was just to the inside of the passenger headlight. the only injuries that i know of are me and my friend from the seat belts.

The Slvrsleeper has gone to the happy hunting grounds. Yesterday at about 4:45 AM I had an insulin reaction (Type 1 diabetic) and blacked out. Witness statements say that I drifted off the right side of the road, corrected, went back off the right side and finally hooked a tire and flipped over, coming to rest on the roof. I was revivied by EMTs about fifteen minutes later, hanging from my seatbelt. I came through without a scratch, but the same cannot be said for the car which was completely destroyed. Left rear strut assembly ripped free of the chassis and ended up under the car, every single body panel has damage. The worst is the roof, which is now square across the two front doors, neither of which will close because of the severe deformation of the roof. I have already salvaged what I want to keep off of her, the brakes and pads are going to the boneyard, along with the entire exhuast system, CAI and my brand new wheels, three of which are ruined. Every time I think about it I want to cry, I loved every thing about this car, spent a ton of time and money getting her right the way I wanted and now all that work is gone. I will probably get something cheap and used as a beater until the money is available for a new NF Sonata ( sometime next year) I will be around listening in on EXD from time to time to be sure, all you guys have been a huge help and comfort to me over the last three or four years of tinkering with my XD. Thats all for now, I'll post what I got to replace her sometime in the next few weeks.

Weird, and disturbing thing is that I had done everything right to avoid having a low sugar reaction. My doctor has thrown his hands in the air and referred me to a specialist to try and sort out what might have caused the problem. Nothing has been said to me by the insurance company or the police about my diabetes and the accident and I certainly hope it stays that way. I guess I can add my beloved Elantra to the list of things that diabetes has cost me over the last twenty years.

Here is a little story about how my Elantra died...
Today was the first day of school. It was raining, dark, and there were a bunch of inexperienced drivers on the road going to school. I picked up my friend and made our way to school. At the stop light right before the school my life turned to hell. An asian kid that didn't speak much English decided that he should slam on his brakes in his Acura RSX, causing the Toyota infront of me to slam on her brakes. I saw her basically hydroplaning and sliding around. I had decided that I was going to drive under the speed limit today, and it was a good thing I did. I was able to safely stop behind her, with her car inches away from the Acura. Everything was fine.
.....
Until the SUV behind me decided to not pay attention and slam into the back of my car, causing me to fly into the Toyta infront of me, causing the Toyota to hit the Acura. The Acura only has two scratches on it from where the Toyota's license plate screws scratched it. THE KID DECIDED TO CRY ABOUT IT. He got out and weeped and moaned about his precious Acura that his daddy bought him. I told him to shut the **** up because my car is TOTALLED. My car did a bit of damage to the back of the Toyota. The kid in the SUV said he slammed on his brakes and tried to swerve and not hit me, but he hit me pretty damn hard. He only had a bent bumper and a few scratches on it. Steel bumpers must be nice!
The rear window shattered, and basically the whole rear is gone. The front is bad, but not nearly as bad as the back.
Pictures will be up as soon as I feel like connecting my phone and uploading them. It's dead.
Three accidents in one year. All not my fault. Two of them on the way to school...the exact same way.

This lady decided to turn in front of my car and it was an angled head on collision. As I was carted away in the ambulance, the police officer told me that the other lady was at fault.

Sorry to hear that about your car, like everyone said glad to see you are for the most part ok. Make sure you check a few car lots and autotrader for '01 or '02 Elantras with about the same mileage as yours had in about the same condition. This way you know about what your car would be worth. Insurance companies don't like to give up money so at least this way you can haggle with them when they (and they will) low ball your settlement. Once you take their check it is a done deal.

(rant deleted) don't want this to turn uglier than it already is!!!
I was driving home from work a couple Fridays ago and a lady ran a red light right in front of me. (She also left the scne but walked back as the towtruck was loading me up) She was un-insured, unlicensed and my insurance guy said "We can't verify her citizenship status", something about an "expired student visa" so I'm basically out a car unless someone can squeeze some cash out of the lady (who can't be found now). Dammit. I'm fine, the airbags didn't even go off. The upside to all this is I won't be asking you guys dumb J2 questions anymore.
Oh yeah the insurance buyback was going to be over $1000 so I can't get it back to fix/part out. She was driving a new-ish Taurus and it drove away fine, I never saw where she went after the crash.

Wow that sucks. Looks like the rest of the car is in great shape.
I was really pissed because I had just stuck a bunch of $ into it, snow tires, plugs/wires,etc and it ran perfectly. THe rest was so nice I really wanted to buy it back and fix it myself but we just couldn't afford it. My wife bought this car, and drove it almost 100K with absolutely no problems, all she ever did was routine maintenance. THe only part she ever had to buy for it was a battery (that cracked and leaked the electrolite out in the accident). Grrr.

Do you have uninsured driver insurance? It would cover a case like that I bet.
My insurance guy is going after the girl, the police got her name etc and they FWD'ed the police report to my ins. guy. IT's a bad sign when the first thing out of the other person's mouth after the accident is "Don't call the police! Don't call anybody about this!" The important thing here is that I'm uninjured, the car can be replaced but I can't.

Yeah... like she has any say in the matter! I had someone rear end me a couple years ago under similar circumstances. As it turned out there was no damage to my car (an old Escort that my son had already totaled anyway), so I let her go, but I know where you're coming from.

I was leaving school to go back home. The road I use bends through the city. i was coming around the bend when i saw this car trying to make a left turn. i stomped on my brakes and slid (20ft or so) downhill into her. My fault. She tried to leave the scene and didnt have any insurance info on her.

2002 Elantra GT...
Purchased- 12-15-05 if I recall, 12,XXX miles on it.
Departed- 6-13-08 with 48,XXX miles.
Rear ended by a newer Dodge Neon, 4 blocks from home, so close!
Great car, she will be missed!

They can be cut out fairly easily. I've replaced strut towers on several cars before.

Yeah, but it's an elantra, it's probably totalled, even if that thing had 10 miles on it, with that kinda damage it'd probably be a write off for the insurance company. You know how these things drop in value as soon as you look at them *that is, unless you want to buy one, than it's almost as much as new for some reason lol.

taking the fender off, then straightening the frame < (no that's not a backyard job) would give a better picture of how much hard labor damage there is to fix, looks like the firewall was crushed a little, and suspension damage. You defiantly got frame damage, and the best way to tell is your driver fender's gaps are messed up.
honestly looks like it is fixable, but I think it will cost more money than its worth, if you truly love that car and want it back, get another, and move your stuff to it. (i'd rather tackle fixing big_rob's rear end collision, that that side one)

The strut tower is only sheet metal welded to the firewall and inner front clip. Cutting the entire front clip off at the firewall and replacing that is not that hard if you have your measurements right. Sometimes you can get it closer to square than it was.
You defiantly got frame damage, and the best way to tell is your driver fender's gaps are messed up.
The frame is at the bottom of the car, not the top. Most of the damage is the sheetmetal, which is above the subframe.

rob, Wow, thats something, not one window broke out, or even the tail lights, they held up well, even the side light in the back bumper still is there.

I know where the frame is. body panels are mounted directly to the uni-body frame of the car, if those body panels are flawless I.E. (Driver fender & Driver Door) meaning no dents... That means there is frame damage if those gaps are altered.
Frame shifts directly move the mount points of body panels, which throws off gaps.
Kinda like if you look at the human body if someones leg is 5 inches longer than one side, their shoulder will be 5 inches taller than the other side.
Basically I'm saying the top of anything is directly effected by its foundation.

looks like a write off to me. whole front end is tweaked to the left.
just look at the last picture on the previous page, gap at the drivers door is messed up. wouldnt surprise me if the a-pillar on the passanger door is tweaked too.
its a shame, but probably not worth it to fix it.

I read through this tread remembering my XD.
It's gone too (as for this topic suggest ;)
I got it new from the lot in 2001, put 160K miles on it until a really bad hail storm "destroyed" it (according to insurance company) along with about a couple hundred others in my office's parking lot. It was a very sad picture!
Too damaged to repair (some ice projectiles were the size of a tennis ball) so it was totalled. I guess it had a mind of its own since the car was getting erratic since that day: engine missfire, doors no longer unlocking-opening, etc. It almost looked scary.
The happy ending to this story is the $5300 paid by insurance for a car that wasn't worth more than it's weight in steel.
So farewell guys, it has been nice getting to know your cars and i'll sure remember these pages whenever i pass by an XD.
Now lets see, what kind of wheels will i get next...

RIP 2006 Hyundai Elantra. You died young; only 26,000 miles.
You served us with honor by constantly transporting 5 people in the car through New York City hellish driving condition. Besides a faulty passenger airbag malfunction , you performed flawlessly. You never complained when we put the cheapest off-brand gas in your tank throughout your life; yet you got awesome gas mileage.
Even when all of the Japanese car owners made fun of you, your morale never let down and you got the job done every time.
We will miss you forever. Please help other Elantra's on the road perform smoothly.
