Hey!

Name is SoftSD. Or SSD or Soft or Softskydestruction.

I am getting ready to begin modding my Hyundai for one of two reasons.

1. I like doing things that are not commonly done.

2. My friends bet me that I wouldn't. (They didn't know about reason 1 :))

When my Dad gets his new car I will take possesion of the Hyundai.

It is a 2001 Hyundai Elantra.
I can't decide on whether to make it a sleeper for a while or work outside in. When I do add a lip/body kit on it will be the M&S Carart Bodykit. It is gorgeous.

Any Suggestions?

XD is the model code Hyundai used for the 2001-2003 Elantra.
XD2 was the 2004-2006.
HD is the desgnation for the new 2007 Elantra.

Being a used 2001, you probably aren't as concerned with warranty as some others. I started on the 'outside' to not have any warranty conflicts by modifying the powertrain. As the cars get older and warranties expire, modifying the engine has less impact on that aspect.

if you're just asking for opinions, i suggest you go for a sleeper first. curiously fast cars rock.

Welcome to the site! Good to see some new used new Elantra owners with used XD's. That's confusing and I'm not sure it even makes sense.

Hope you are able to find all the info you need and hopefully you can add a little bit of info yourself.

Ya, I didn't understand that first one.

I will hopefully add some info later.

I would go with a sleeper...bodykit and all that stuff adds alot of weight....which in turn will make your car even slower than it already is

KeWLKaT

a lot of weight... i mean that's questionable... its fiberglass so since you're changing out your bumper covers it should only be like 20 lbs extra with the sideskirts on top of that

Your first "sleeper" mod should be to put on a Hyundai Tiburon rear anti-sway bar. Search the forums and you'll find plenty of discussion. It makes the back end of the car much less prone to roll in turns.

And a little clarification: All Elantras from 2001 to 2006 are officially XDs. There was a refresh in 2004 which included some styling changes, especially in the front end, and also included introduction of the Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) version of the 2.0 Beta engine. Because of these changes, Elantras from 2004 to 2006 are commonly referred to as XD2s.

Here's my car (a 2005 XD2)

and here is Paki's car (a pre-2004 XD)

Notice the differences in the grill.

Do the mods to enhance corner-carving abilities first. Those bring the most satisfaction with this car, IMO. ;)

your absolutely right kewlkat....but still 20lbs is a difference concidering(sp?) how slow our cars already are

How much($) am I looking at to making a fairly good car (sleeper), against tuners like Honda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, etc?

KeWLKaT

LOL that statement is funny.

Mitsu: To go against boosted DSMs... A lot of money
Subaru: To go against WRXs... A lot more money.
Honda: You are already faster, stock, than a civic with intake and exhaust. ZERO DOLLARS :D:D:D:D

My goal is to beat WRX's at the 1/4' track.
My cost estimate at this stage is around the 7000 mark.

i'd go with sleeper and show a bit, I myself would put money into suspension first. I wish I would have done that before anything else in hindsight, but it is whatever your budget can allow.
First mod should be the debadge though.

I would love to see a elantra beat a wrx in the 1/4 mile, but would it be cheaper to just buy a wrx?

robs02elantra

WRX - 24,995 before delivery and all the taxes
XDGT - 15,215 + 5400ish for whatever Seinster is going to do...

=20,615. 4,000 left over for some fun.
