Hi All,

I have a 2002 Elantra GLS. My son drives it, mostly. What was a once-in-a-while occurance now happens every time. Very frustrating. When you go to start the car and turn the key to the momentary position (where the starter engages), nothing happens. That is to say you can see the dash lights dim, like its drawing current, and you can hear the fuel pump, but nothing from the starter. If you sit there turning the key on and off lots and lots of times, it will finally engage and start.

Before I run down to the dealer, I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this problem.

Thanks,

Bill

how old is it? do a search for 'clutch interlock switch' and you should be able to find something...assuming this is a 5speed too..lol

on a different car, yes, check your connections to make sure that none are loose going to the starter, and if all are tight, smack it a couple times with a rubber mallet or a cluth wrapped breaker bar...it might be a loose brush in the motor

Yup. It's a 5 speed. I'll see what I can find under clutch interlock switch.

sometimes this happens to me, but then i realize that im not putting the clutch to the floor all the way, and just have to press down a little bit more and then it will start

Yep. Clutch in all the way. Still does it.

if you get battery going, but it doesnt sound like its turning over AT ALL, im about 95% sure its the clutch interlock switch. you can turn the key, nothing will happen. wont sound like its trying to start, nothing. then you can try turning it again and it fires right up

take it to the dealership, tell them to look at the clutch interlock switch. from what they told me, its a fairly common issue, and it only takes them a few hours to fix. day at the most if they're lazy and not getting to it til later

just reading over the 1st post again, and seeing its a XD and not an XD2, im more than 95% sure its the switch

Either bad contact at the clutch switch, starter solenoid points and or wire conection at one of the above. I`d go to the dealer for a diagnosis..
