View Full Version : Laundrey List of Questions (Help!)
Hello everyone, name is Ugzz and im from Pittsburgh PA. Im super new to the forum, this is my first post actually. Im a member of a handfull of audio and related forums but am completely new to the elantra. I picked up my 06 sedan 5 speed just 4 days ago! I did some searched through the forums and still have a few questions, if yinz could take a peek and get back to me it would be appreciated, Thanks in advance!
Sorry if some of this stuff has already been covered
1. When cruizing at over 40mph do your vents leak alot of air? because mine sure do. when doing highway speeds its almost like i have the vents set to level 1
2. Is anyone elses passenger seat sensor for the air bags picky? If my g/f sits in the seat at an angle the weight isnt distributed right or something and the ait bag turns off... anyone else see anything like that?
3. Has anybody dealt with Circuit City or Best Buy for audio installs? the dealer told me if i did it myself and screwed something up it would blow my warranty, like if i screwed up a clip or a window or some elec item then they wouldnt cover it, but if CC or BB did it then i would have a receipt and i could call them on it and they would pay... so im interested ... i usually do installs myself though, and i already read the DIY on this site and put in my head unit, that wasnt too bad. but im more interested in having CC or BB do my amps, cause there is alot of wiring there and i dont want to break the clips on anything.. anybody?
4. Anyone else have the 5 speed sedan? what are your opinions on it in general? ive had mine for only a few days and so far.. im in love with it, so my first impressions are top notch!
5. does anyone else think the rear stock speakers suck? the fronts are ok for being factory but the rears have like no high mids-highs IMO, they do have some decent bass-mid though... at least imo that is. Im also giving the stock speakers 23w rms too, so im sure that affects them some
6. to anyone with the stick, can you just pull the stick into reverse without hitting the clutch? like, i thought it shoud lock and not let me do that, but instead it lets me, and its not a good thing.. ive only been driving stick for less then 6 months and still have amateaur questions and make amatear mistakes on the occasion :P...
hm, damn you know, i had like 10 questions but now that im on the forum i cant remember them! if i remember ill try and post them :^) Thanks again for the help!

The passanger air bag is a recall. You can take it to the factory and have them reprogram the ECU!!!!!!!!!!!

For your question #1 if you hit the recirc button on the hvac it will stop the draft you are feeling... mind you it will also limit the fresh air coming into the vehicle so if you were drinking beers and eating wings the night before you may not want to recirculate that air....
alienman, Thanks! i never even thought of that. I suppose that would close the outside vent door. Great tip!, normally its no prob, but sometimes id rather it be sealed so its not blowing air in my face. Esp when its set to defrost.
tx_boy. are you ****ting me? Is there anywhere else i can find out about this?
evan 938, thanks for the help man, and as for the clutch thing, i have no idea, i dont know if its suposed to do that, but i dont like that it does. I think it SHOULD lock heh. and personally I also am not a fan of the hatches, there isnt a hatchback out that i like, even the uber sporty brands :P
Also to those of you that DID do audio installs yourself, i looked at the DIY section and they look doable, but they still look like a real pain. Any thoughts on the install? Like did you have anything break or were clips shattered or anything like that? i did the headunit already and on the plastic piece that is below the hu, it has a screw and a small plastic nub that acts as a place holder and on one side the plastic nub and the whole piece that the screw goes into snapped right off, and i barely put any force on it at all. The screw was just in so tight that unscrewing it snapped it right off. So after that im worried that ill have repeats of that when doing the speakers and such.. anything to watch for?

well.. putting ****er into ANY gear w/o pushing in on the clutch is bad. and the only mistake i could see anybody try to make is while downshifting from 5th to 4th. but i say try cause the gate to reverse is locked unless you are going there from the neutral position. so you can't shift into reverse from 5th. other than that, i don't see why you'd mistake reverse for any other gear.
anyways, welcome to the site and glad to hear you like your car.
Thanks, and you answered my question perfectly in letting me know that it is locked when leaving fifth, but not from a neutral position. That is what i was looking for. Thanks - and yeah, honestly im rediculously happy with the car so far. I had like a few friends buy cobalts becasue they found a dealer getting rid of 05s for 9,999 and BOTH of them HATE their cars so far.. and their stuck with them for 3 years now ha... 2 bad for them!

Ya let me find the link. They actually just had the class action lawsuite against Hyundai about it. We won and I am actually waiting to get something in the mail that gives me different options on what I can do. Just got e-mail from the lawyer saying the letters will not get out till june or july.

i see that is for the 04-05, i have the 06 and im having an issue also! its like if you do not site perfectly strait it shuts off, so if you lean or redistribute your weight or something then no air bag.. is it possible that they never fixed the problem from the 04-06? especially if they were aware of it! Weird, well anyway, thanks for the link and ill contact the dealer to see if they know anything also.. tx

I wouldn't worry about the install. The only area where I've broken clips are on my rear hatch trim, and one push fastener under the hood. The dealer gave me a new push fastener for free, and the parts that broke off my hatch trim haven't resulted in rattles. Just go for it.
And for the air bag, talk to your dealer about it. Mine has behaved for the most part, but on a road trip this weekend my 18-year-old son was in the front seat and the airbag off light lit up a couple times. He was trying to sleep in the seat and was sitting kinda sideways. The rest of the time, it seems to work the way it should.
But if yours isn't, definitely talk to the dealer about it. If the reprogramming doesn't fix it, they can replace the whole sensor which involves removing the passenger seat for a period of time (they have to ship the whole seat bench to a repair center).

1. When cruizing at over 40mph do your vents leak alot of air? because mine sure do. when doing highway speeds its almost like i have the vents set to level 1
Answer: Yep. But it can usually be cured with an adjustment of the cables that control the flaps to adjust the distribution of air to the dash, feet and defogger.
2. Is anyone elses passenger seat sensor for the air bags picky? If my g/f sits in the seat at an angle the weight isnt distributed right or something and the ait bag turns off... anyone else see anything like that?
Answer: First an explanation of the Occupant Classification Sensor (in general, not just Hyundai specific as this style of sensor is used in other makes as well). The OCS sensor is designed to determine the optimum seating position for airbag firing. If a passenger is leaning back at an angle, turned to the side, slightly off center in the seat, typically the OCS will disable the airbag. If your passenger is sitting in the seat, feet on the floor, and mostly upright, and the light goes out, the system is operating normally. There is however a TSB on www.hmaservice.com that addresses the issue. Your dealer can be of assistance with this. There are two campaigns on the airbag system in the 04-05 Elantra, but they DO NOT address this particular concern.
3. Has anybody dealt with Circuit City or Best Buy for audio installs? the dealer told me if i did it myself and screwed something up it would blow my warranty, like if i screwed up a clip or a window or some elec item then they wouldnt cover it, but if CC or BB did it then i would have a receipt and i could call them on it and they would pay... so im interested ... i usually do installs myself though, and i already read the DIY on this site and put in my head unit, that wasnt too bad. but im more interested in having CC or BB do my amps, cause there is alot of wiring there and i dont want to break the clips on anything.. anybody?
Answer: Would you let someone who worked at Pizza Hut yesterday install an audio system in your car. I have seen countless "hackjobs" performed at the hands of Best Buy and Circuit City. I'd suggest you stay away. Find a local audio shop with a long history (and proof of their work with a photo album) and you should be fine.
4. Anyone else have the 5 speed sedan? what are your opinions on it in general? ive had mine for only a few days and so far.. im in love with it, so my first impressions are top notch!
Answer: 2002 5 speed Ela GT here. The 5 speed isn't the most silky shifting vehicle in the world, but it is far from the worst. Install a short shifter if you want quicker more precise shifts after time.
5. does anyone else think the rear stock speakers suck? the fronts are ok for being factory but the rears have like no high mids-highs IMO, they do have some decent bass-mid though... at least imo that is. Im also giving the stock speakers 23w rms too, so im sure that affects them some
Answer: Come on man...they are factory speakers...
6. to anyone with the stick, can you just pull the stick into reverse without hitting the clutch? like, i thought it shoud lock and not let me do that, but instead it lets me, and its not a good thing.. ive only been driving stick for less then 6 months and still have amateaur questions and make amatear mistakes on the occasion :P...
Answer: Never tried it. So I don't have any info on this, but, I'd make sure I didn't do it anymore. I'll never forget seeing a 5.0L Mustang nuke a trans cause he hit reverse by mistake.

have you looked into a dealership? maybe the shift interlock mechanism (i'm pretty sure its what its called, a little widget with a spring for reverse lockout) spring is on correctly, apparently it's very easy to do. if the car's spring is messed up, it might do that??

to the guy 2 posts up talking about the shifting not being smooth...are you serious? this car shifts smooth as glass. i was talking to a guy once while i was delivering pizza and he said he had driven one and never felt anything shift smoother. anyone who has driven my car (who doesnt have an xd) has said the same thing. nothing but smooth

Welcome to the site Ugzz! Looks like the welcome crew has helped out with most of the questions.
And like they said, the audio install shouldn't be a problem at all.
Check out the DIY section and don't forget to run some searches for quick answers.
Thanks to everyone for the help and info. Much appreciated! I am going to be in contact with the dealer this afternoon and will bring up the air bag and the reverse issues and see what he thinks.. As for the shifts, as i said iveo nly been on stick for like 6 months, but out of the s10 i drove, the neon, the cobalt, and a ****ty toyota sport something or other, i think the elantra tops them all with smoothness, Also i think the elantra is the easiest of the bunch to get the friction zone just right. So starting even on heavy slopes isnt much of a problem at all.. i love it!
As for the DIY section, it is AWESOME. Ive already used it for my hu install, and ill prolly use it for the firewall drilling also. Not sure if i saw a rear speaker install on it, but ill be checking that out also.
I saw a link for wiring through hyundai, but it looks like you have to make some sort of account? i guess ill fight that bridge when i get there...
JUST spoke with my dealer a min ago. (he called WHILE i was writing this, lol) Turns out the air bag will shut off if anyone does not sit face forward feet on the floor as a safety feature in the 06. If you are sideways and the bag blows you may be injured so it shuts off for anyone not sitting perfectly strait. Apparently it has 6 sensors to detect when peopel are Not sitting strait so that it can purposely shut off, so thats that on that issue,
As for the reverse he had no idea, id have to talk to a tech, which i will not get to do until next tuesday when i take my elantra in for my bumper to get repainted. When i picked it up there were some scratches on it and they are going to repant it reclean it and give me a rental for 2 days... ill miss my car :( hehe
Also i see the site mods actually post and get involved, that is good stuff, so far i freakin love this site, you guys rawk
