View Full Version : Tiburon and Elantra - Related?

Guess this is a noob question, but I was wondering if the Tiburon is in fact based on the Elantra, particularly because I've read of people using Tiburon parts in their Elantras and other such things.

Or if it's not on the same XD platform, is there still a close relationship?

they share the same engine, but the tiburon is on a different platform than the elantra.

so..... the fact that many of the suspension parts being the same or very similar is just luck or chance?

I don't think so....

my understanding has always been that the Elantra and the Tiburon DO share the same platform....

being that the tiburon has a 99.6" wheel base and the elantra has a 102.7" wheel base i would say that that is not the same platform. the elantra and the tuscon share the same platform.

I don't think everyone here understands the concept of a unibody car. There isn't a full frame that would determine wheel base, the body is the frame. There's a subframe in the front, and a subframe in the rear. The subframes (as far as I understand) are the same on the elantra and the tiburon. It's just the body is different causing the difference in wheel base.

Wheelbases that are the same to a tenth of an inch seem to suggest to me that two cars are related. That's how I generally tell what GM cars share the same platform. But having a different wheelbase doesn't mean that they don't share the same platform. Kind of like the different wheelbase lengths of Chevy vans and SUVs?

the whole body of the tiburon is different. yes, the engines are the same and some suspension parts fit, but that doesnt mean its on the same platform. i guess its a matter of opinion on how you want to consider something the 'same' platform. being that the XD is over 3" longer, 4 doors, not one body part is similar, different lug pattern, tib exhausts dont fit, tibs have engine choices, tranny choices, etc etc. to me, that does not = same platform. if you want to say its the same because struts/springs fit, the tib has a beta 2 engine and (what we're being told by someone who isn't 100% sure) the subframes are the same then ok. i dont see it as anywhere near the same

We need someone to sacrifice an elantra and a tiburon in the name of science!!! so we can dissect and determine the solution plus.... :worthless

The 4 cyl's are the same with the elantra and tibby.. Just in case theres a noob looking at this thread.

The two platforms are *related* but not *identical*. The rear suspension geometry is the same which is why the Tib GT sway bar is of use to us.

And just to throw this into the mix: The Kia Spectra and Spectra5 are built on a platform derived from the Elantra, so it's a close cousin as well.

I suspect the HD Elantra for 2007 will be anothe evolution off the Spectra and the design will evolve rather than be totally new for at least a few generations. Has anyone checked out the undercarriage of a new HD?

P.S.... it's a n00b question, but a *good* n00b question.

im amazed that no one has flamed for searching, but i agree with evan on this one...

i would say that there are similar parts that can be used, but for the sake of cost, why design non-interchangeable parts? it costs the company less to use similar parts (pedals, rear sway bar, audio, multiguages, etc.) so very similar, not the same.

Like Evan said, unibody cars CAN'T share the same "platform". However, they can share the same parts.

For example: (since this was already brought up a couple of times)

Suspension

Rear Subframe is the same
Front subframe is similar, though not the same (we have to switch the front coilovers around to make them work for our cars). I could be wrong with this, but I think it has something to do with the speed sensor mounting location or brake line bracket, not sure.

And of course, the Engines/Mechanical parts are the same, except for ECU.

The elantra, the tiburon, and the tuscon all share the same chasis. They may stretch and shorten it for that particular car but its all the same. Some parts are interchangable to a degree.

My fiance is fond of the Tiburon, particularly the previous models (presumably pre-XD). Anyone have any experience on how they (and newer ones) would compare to the Elantra? I of course love the Elantra as it is and would probably recommend the version with the same 2.0L Engine.

From my understanding, before the 01 Elantra and 03 Tiburon, the cars were much more similar than they are today. It has been said that up to the '01 Tib (no 2002 models), the Tib was a 2-door version of the pre-XD Elantra.

Adding to something I read above concerning the ECUs: I was pretty-sure the 4cyl tib ECU is the same as the Elantra ECU. There was a discussion about that somewhere on here within the past few months. The 6cyl tib has a different ECU, of course, because it controls the 2.7L Delta (suck) engine, not the 2.0L Beta II.

K, noob question - what's an ECU?

Engine Control Unit AKA Computer that takes the input from the various engine sensors and manages the engine; when do the fuel injectors fire, how much fuel do they inject etc... etc...
