a friend of mine who lives in the same apartment building as I bought a new accent but he had an accident on mother's day trying to buy his mom a good meal
anyways, he brought his accent to a body shop to fix it and asked hyundai dealer for a rental car
he got a 06 silver Elantra VE sedan
his parking lot is just across mine so I know he's been driving it for 3 days
this morning I went to the parking lot as usual and clicked the unlock button
guess what? my car and the other elantra would blink the turning signals at the same time...
so I pressed it again, and both car opened up!
then I locked the car and pressed it again and see if both cars make that "beep" sound and they do!
I was very frustrated and called the friend and his remote control can lock/unlock my car too... but we couldn't start the engine with each other's key so that was a bit safer....
I read about these things happening in Korea but I never though it would happen to me...
now I gotta call Hyundai and ask them to change my signal
isn't this weird?

Well, there are only so many available frequencies to be used for the signals, so it's bound to happen now-and-again.

lol... called hyundai just now and they don't believe me...
boths of us will have to bring our cars to the dealer at the same time and show them
this is why i will be getting an aftermarket alarm.. at least its a *tiny* bit safer

And Hyundais are only getting more and more popular every year so I'm sure it's going to happen more and more. Although I wonder how many Honda's and other mainstream manufacturers have things like this happen.

My friend and I both had 2002 Elantras from the same dealership. I bought mine 2 weeks prior to his purchase. Thank goodness Cdn's didn't get alarms, but we did find that our detachable face radios were interchangable. Infact that was a good thing since we car pooled a lot and he often forgot his radio. But when he asked the dealer, they said they have 20 different radios head units and we just got the same one coincendently. They were amazed and to have them both from the same dealer too.

the keys from my friends 91 hardbody truck would open up and start his cousins (my other friends) 94ish nissan sentra. now that was cool.

And one day I accidentally put my car key into the lock on the front door of my house and when I turned it the house started
So..I'm like Ok..and decide to take the house for a spin around the block:drive:
...a cop pulls me over and says "OK Buddy...mind telling me where you live?"
I said...."Here"! :D
In all seriousness though, my key to my Astro Van worked in my Father in Laws Astro Van! Mine was a year newer than his too! I only tried because I was curious and when it worked I was like WTF...cool!
One of my moms friends was buying groceries and went out side to her blazer.... or so she thought. She put the groceries in and drove home, on the way home she realized that the belongings inside her blazer wern't hers she went home dropped off the groceries and returned to the store to find her blazer still there, switched vehicles and drove home... she then contacted the dealer,
They said that legally they only have to make so many different keys so it just so happened that the key was a match for a vehicle of the same year and color.

GM was really bad about only making around 3-5 different key cuts for each model of there car. My friend had a Fiero and they only made 2 different key cuts. So if you had a key to one you had a 50% chance of being able to unlock and start another Fiero.

You know, because of this thread, everytime I see an XD parked in a parking lot, I'm going to push my unlock button and see if I ever find one on the same frequency. Same goes for my SF, since I see a lot more of those than I do XDs.

The "drove home with another car" is great!!! hahaha and I heard that the key problems happens a lot with hyundai ... you can unlock other cars but can't start them!

International has an issue with that. From what I understand there were a certain number of keys cut (9 I believe) but if they were every switched out, then all the after market keys were the same.

ok, I just went to my dealer today with the friend with other Elantra.
we foundout that my spare remote and those from any other cars aren't able to open mine
BUT mine can open like 3 different Elantras over there! lol
EVERY single workers at the dealer came out and tested it
one of the mechanics was making a joke saying that I modified the remote control to steal all hyundai cars over there
the weirdest thing is, even though they changed frequency on my car, my remote(not the spare though) STILL opens other cars
so the poor lazy mechanic had to change all other car's frequency, then no others cars would open at all
it was a fun trip there lol

my friend had a 93 mustang LX vert...biggest POS ive seen...well, i was out seeing a movie with another friend, and she left the top down on it, so i take the key to my 89 GT and with a little resistance, it starts...so we hid it on the other side of the building... :D
