Alright, for a while now I Have been talking about going up to three 12" subwoofers. Finally i am building the box for the subs!!!
The initial Mold :

The mold Plus the rings where I wanted them to be:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a119/JohnBlaze94/System%20Build/Moldandrings.jpg
Covered the rings and mold with my felt:

I layed the frist coat of fiberglass over the felt, now i have to fiberglass from the inside to make it strong enough to withstand the pressure.
Our plan is to work on it every wednesday or thursday untill the entire build is complete. At the rate we are working now, we should be done in under a month. But i still have to save up and buy the last amp.
I'll keep the pictures coming weather yall want em or not. Hopefully i will actually remember my digital camera so that i dont have to use my crap camera phone any more.

dude, that is totally cool looking!
I just recently started checkin out fiberglass enclosures and I was curious to see a simple picture process, now I see what's going on. What's the total square footage, looks like the enclosure will be occupying the entire trunk!!
good luck man. keep us posted!

When we are finished with the project, there will be no trunk space left because of all of the amp racks and the extra battery.

Yea, I want to see more pics so please keep them coming. I have two 12s now and just bought a third to add so I'm interested...plus I'm going from an all wood box to fiberglass too.
How much airspace you going to have there?
What kind of subs? (sorry if you posted this already or somewhere else)

Not sure of the exact air space as of yet, lots of math to do what with all of the curves and accounting for the magnet structure and such. Im expecting between 2.8 and 3.5 usable cubic feet.
I'm putting three Alpine typeR 12's in the box, so its gonna pound. (as long as i can keep it powered anyways.)

Looks like it'll be thumping man, nice setup, good work!

if you dont know the cubic feet of the box...but you know the cubic feet the subwoofer needs...should have figured that out previously?? if its too small or too big it wont sound right...
johnblaze94
06-08-2006, 11:26 PM
Subs require .75-1.25 cubic feet each. So i figured that the 2.8-3.5max would be perfect. Yeah, i did figure that out previously.
Anywho, today we glassed the edges inside the box to ensure that everything was well together. We also layed a second layer on the whole inside to ensure that the structure would self support, and thus allow us to remove the ring supports. So now it looks like a real subwoofer box.
I have more crappy pics to post from my phone (forgot my camera again), but no cable to transfer them right now. Soon as i get home i'll post em up!

The box glassed on to with the excess felt removed:

Hard to see, but where the black meets the greenish colored glass, there is a seem to fill in with resin and chop mat:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a119/JohnBlaze94/System%20Build/seamtofill.jpg
After filling the seem all the way around the inside and laying a layer of chop mat and resin inside, we could safely remove the supports:

So today we added a couple more layers to the inside of the box and trimmed out the rings. we are up to about three layers or so on the inside now, so about half way there. Nothing really exciting is hapening with the project at the moment, just lots or repetition. Got some better pics on my friends camera, so i'll post em up tomorrow.

Thats gonna be sick. If you can get 500-600w rms to each of those subs it's going to be insane.
Props.

Alrighty.
After we layed a few more layers inside the box, we tested the rigidity. (thats me on the box)
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a119/JohnBlaze94/System%20Build/IMG_1092.jpg
Then we shaved down some of the edges so that we will get a nise flush fitment. (on a side note, the lowered WS6 in the background is not required for a project like this, but it sure makes trips to the hardware store quicker!)
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a119/JohnBlaze94/System%20Build/IMG_1093.jpg
Finally, we test fitted the one loose sub. I think its gonna look bad *** when we are done!
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a119/JohnBlaze94/System%20Build/IMG_1095.jpg
I ordered the third amp, so it should come in on monday or tuesday, so we are going to test fit the box and hook everything up to see how its gonna sound next week!

the wood rings you used for the build are they prefab like that or do you cut them yourself? and what did you use for material, 3/4" mdf ?
Cant wait to see it once its located! be sure to put up some pics! im droolin over here!
also you make me want to chuch my prefab out the window and start my own project... now if that money tree in the backyard would just start blooming!
johnblaze94

We cut the rings out of 3/4" mdf and routed the top edge so that they would roll nicely into the box.

The Test Fit!!!
Box fits like a glove!

Set the subs in to see how theyd look.

The upside down sub is not going to stay that way, we just wanted to see how it would look.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a119/JohnBlaze94/System%20Build/IMG_1111.jpg
We ended up hooking everything up to test the structure of the box, and man does it pound. For the first time I have to turn the bass down to be comfortable.

NICE! I can't wait to see the final completed project. I love posts where you can follow the mod as it happens over time (kinda like old-school EXD).
uggghh... oh man, i think i just pooped a little...
that is lookin Sick!, cant wait to see it completed!
Any idea how many hours you have into the project so far?
johnblaze94
06-26-2006, 10:41 PM
Lets see. 6 total work days, of those the amount of time varies between 3-6 hours.
I'd say around 30 real work hours so far. (and by work hours im including breaks and screwing around with dried resin in the little cups).
Id say its not too bad for a first attempt.

looking good...but why those particular diretions?? that will not achieve the most bass...having the subs angled back would...are you just going for SPL? and not clarity?
johnblaze94
06-30-2006, 04:50 AM
Thats the easiest way to set them up imo. However, we are already planing on completing that box and the building a second box as well. Like i said, it is a "First attempt." Not "the attempt."

Good point :nosthumbs
That looks to be a very small amount of airspace for those subs in a sealed enclosure. How is the sound, beside's being loud as hell, is it a "good" sounding enclousure or does it have any distortion or muffled sound. I would just think that by having the subs facing different directions with no possible phase changing capabilities, that the waveforms would intersect and cancel out. But that's just me. :D
LOOKS SICK MAN!!!

Sounds good to me. And pretty clean to everyone else. I just need to find a way to keep the trunk lid on the car now. Stopping vibration is one thing, but if i can litterally watch the trunk lid hop off of the car about a quarter of an inch, Dynomat aint gonna cut it.

I've got good news, and i've got bad news.
The Bad News: :(
This is how its gonna look for about another month or two while my buddy moves and settles into his new house. And then I get to rip it out and destroy it. I've also decided to stick with two 12s instead of three, because we can make the overall look of the system much better that way.
The Good News:
After my buddy is all settled in, we begin fabrication on the second box. Oh, and the two 12s aren't going to be the alpine type r's. I've decided that i am going to go all out and get the Alpine Type X's.

I'm sure someone on here would be interested in the box if you offered it in the marketplace. Just make it for a local pickup and make make them finish the rest.
why scrap the project? not happy with the sound? or not happy with the look?

I agree with quicksilverGT - don't destroy the box, sell it off. You need to start from scratch anyway, right?

hey is there any reason why you sticking to alpine? i have hear them type x subs are nice but needs lots of power to make them sound nice. If i was you i go for a set of digital design subs i beleive they are best money can buy and they out perfom alpine in spl anyday of the week

I was also thinking about a pair of 12W6V2's. I could still use two of those three amps then. HMMMM.....
Also, about selling the box, It needs A LOT of finishing work and some of the dimensions are a little off anyways, I wouldn't feel right selling it, but if someone REALLY wanted it and saw it first, I would give it to em pretty cheap.

Thats awesome! Where to you buy the fiberglass and how to you apply it? I am really thinking of building a sub box but not to this caliber. Also I am too wondering about the rings?
