View Full Version : Sedan and 6x9 rattle
Has anyone else experienced any 6x9 rattle in the sedans?
I didnt feel like ripping everything apart and had some minor trouble getting into things so i had a local install shop help me out and the 6x9s they are in good and tight, but im still getting some rattle from back there. Only when the bass is turned up and the jls are really boomin though.. (as well as 6x9s can that is)
Anyone else experience this, or perhaps figure out what exaclty is rattleing? maybe the extra brake light or something like that? or even the rear deck itself? i cant seem to pinpoint it.
if anyone has any ideas let me know, thanks

I've noticed a slight rattle myself...never really bothered though....try some sound deadening material...might help..
yeah, was thinkin about that, but the question is, where do i even put it. Also im not about to buy a full rear kit and cover the whole back dash, sound deadening **** is $$.. well when you buy the nice stuff it is.
Also i guess all in all its not going to matter in the end, cause once i get my subs in ill be crossin over the 6x9s to just high and mid cause the subs will cover the low end.. but for now and when i hit up any trips ill need my trunk space so ill just have the 6x9s kickin so im still interested in fixin it..
maybe ill just put in my sound attenuators and blast it and start REALLY pokin around back there trying to find the source..
if anyone else has any ideas or comments let me know! also if i find anything ill put it in here

take the rear 6 x 9's out. it is almost completely useless to have them in if you have subs. i had a slight rattle in my sedan as well when i had my subs up and my 6x9's in, as soon as i took the 6x9's out and took the faceplate/cover thing off of them i had almost no rattle.
one thing i can recommend, is bass boomers. theyre are little buckets that wrap around your 6x9's to protect them from the subs power. i have a set im not using if you are interested...
also, keep in mind that your trunk is completely sealed off. when your subs push all that bass and air, its going to try and push through the weakest spot in the trunk, which happens to be the 6x9's and their paper cones.
thanks but heres a bit more info:
see i do a good bit of travel here and there, nothing super major but enough that i need an empty trunk i can fill with **** for the trip, so i take the subs out here and there..
a. the 6x9s are rattleing on their own, without the subs installed, they are just so loud and move so much that its making a rattle in the back somewhere.. which is my problem. When the subs are installed ill have the 6x9s crossed over so they make no bass so their cone will barely move
b. personally i am not one for "staging", my car is not a concert and does not and should not sound like one. I will never win any competitions because of this, but i am all about full 360 degree sound. I want my rears to be As loud as my fronts. (hence the fact they are jl and get 111rms each) i have surround sound in my room at home and my living room at home and essentially in my car, im all about being immerssed from every direction. I know, its weird, but its just my preference..
As for those 6x9 covers ive heard Very mixed results from them. Some people i talk to say they help and others say they completely screw up the sound. So that really scares me away from them.. Also i think adding more bass to the 6x9s might cause even more of a rattle cause i think its the bass thats causing it.. So all in all, thanks for the offer but i think id rather just keep them free air, also i like being able to see the big jl magnets from the open trunk. Also ive had these jls in my old car and had no rattle, so its gotta be something in the elantra... ill keep lookin until i find it
About the subs, i understand that the trunk is sealed, but no trunk no matter how well the factory think its sealed is 100%. i have never seen a vehicle with significant push on the rear cones just by subs. Even peeps with a few 15s, then again most people i know run sealed. So maybe with ported theres alot more air moving around in there, not sure exaclty how that copares.. Also i havent seen any elantra systems in person either, so its possible the elantra trunk is way tighter then the other vehicles ive seen.
I may be new to elantras but ive still been installin systems in other cars and friends cars and even lending a small hand at a local shop a time or two. i been doin this shiz all the way back to my 1st car, an 85 caddy coupe hehe. (did amp but no sub, shame 2, it WAS a caddy heh) That was about 5 years ago and my elantra is car lucky number 5.
sorry i rant alot, that was just some personal info thats all, cause im so damn weird about shiz i like to inform.
none the less thanks for the reply though.. so since i hear mixed about the 6x9 covers what did you think about them? i was thinking of getting something like that for the fronts of my car cause i have 5.25 adapted to fit. i dont think i have a perfect seal..

I had the same issue when I installed my audiobahn's. What has worked for me has been weatherstripping, $5 a roll at your local hardware store. I think I've been using like 3/8 inch I think, but I unscrewed the 6x9's and placed the stripping around the opening then put the speakers back on. I also placed small pieces around the clips of the rear deck. I've used it to isolate several vibrations, ie behind my license plate, on the dome light, around the trunk. Just my 2 cents, but has worked well for me. Hope this helps

Check the dome light lens. Mine rattles when I crank up the bass...Talk about annoying.

You are right, no truck is 100% sealed. I will tell you this for sure, I can throw a couple 15s in the trunk of my El with about 2000 watts and destroy whatever is installed in the read deck with all that pressure.

Ill tell you right now im running 1200 w rms in subs alone in a sealed box with 2 12's, i unhooked my 6x9's in the back and left them in for a day or two and you can visually see the bass pushing them up. If i were to have my rear deck speakers on, even with mids only, i would rip those things apart.
anyways, i understand no trunk is completely sealed, but A LOT pressure is going to try and find its way out, wether it be your rear speakers or a couple small slits or holes in your trunk. the rear deck wont receive all the pressure, but it will sureley receive enough (in my case) to disrupt my rear deck speakers which is why i took them out.
on a side note, im not sure if this will fix your problem, but when i removed my rear deck and took out the 6x9's i noticed the grill was not very firmly attatched to the rear deck and i could only screw it down so much and then it wouldnt tighten anymore. so if you are really worried about that rear rattle, check and see if its the grill bouncing up and down. if it is, maybe use some 2 sides foam sticky tape and wrap it around the inner part of the grill.
Thanks guys, i think ill go with 2 things, checkin the rear light for vibrations, then if i still have it ill just weatherstrip the 6x9s down. Thanks, i wouldnt have even thought of that!.. which is rediculous cause ive done that on subs before, but never even thought about it for the rears lol.
and as for the pressure once i posted i felt like a dum@$s casue i started thinking about it and my sable had the entire trunk rebuilt before i bought it and leaked all over the place. and before that i had an eagle and it had a slot for a factory 10 in the center of the rear deck so all the pressure was released right there. Youd think that would help a ton, but the eagle was such a big car that it kinda cancelled out the fact that more sound was comin in lol

I've noticed that sometimes my 6x9's rattle too. However I believe it is the factory speaker cover that is rattling, not the speakers. Ditch the stock covers for something better (and better looking). Also, I have noticed a rattle more frequently that comes from the rear view mirror screw cover (the black cover on the windshield.
