Ok here are the symptoms

Lopey idle - Surges from about 500 - 1000 - 1500 then falls back and surges again. It doesn't stop

fuel in the intake tubing and the air filter is soaked

What I have done: ----

Changed the spark plugs and wires

The car is a 94 cavalier RS 3.1

What would bring gas into the air intake?

Most likely the intake manifold is leaking, causing the wierd idle and over fueling. 3.1's are notorious for that. Basically need to remove the intake manifold and replace the gaskets. On the 3.1/3.4 you also have to remove the valve cover gaskets.

I don't mean to be rude in any way.....but.....shouldn't you have looked maybe on a chevy forum???

Then again....we have some very smart peeps here...

Good choice...and seeing as how this is your home turf...you'll probably get flamed the least....

so basically, i need to replace both valve cover gaskets and the IM gasket. Just to make things clear. Thanks a lot for the quick input

does that cover the 3.1 and the "3100". I know there are some big diffs between those two motors. One is simular to the newer 3.4 that just got replaced. Dunno wtf the other came from....

actually, if you have fuel in your intake tubing, then the fuel pressure regulator is leaking. check by unplugging your vacuum line going to the fpr from the "spider" on the intake manifold and turn on your key, fuel will problay come out of it! im 99% positive!
and yes, gm engine love to leak lower intakes, but it wouldnt cause this issue.
considering im ase certified and i work im a gm(caddy, olds, biuck, gmc, hyundai)dealership

ok, upon earlier advice im already about done taking the manifold off. just have to figure out how to get it totally off. Since im in there, may as well replace the gaskets. If that doesnt work I will try your suggestion. I guess in that case I would need a new fpr. How much do those run?

and mnstrmech wins. as i was building it back up i tested the fpr and it spewed like a fountain into where the vacuum line should have been. so its off to replace that now.
