JVC Kameleon.
Had a few problems since I had to make my own harness (w/ my dads help) and didn't have the schematics for the oem wires. Also my dad thought there was one power cable and a negative but i told him the had to be a bypass. at first he didnt belive me but in the end i turned out right!!!
(sorry the camera is a piece of crap, ill take some w/ my dads later....)

its not touch screen but it has concieled buttons on it. i saw a guy on the 'net selling it for like $130. my gramps got it for his b-day a while ago. its a pretty old headunit actually. if you want one, i did a search on goole for JVC Kameleon and got alot of results new and used.
they also have a new one, kameleon II, it has voice recognition.

dude, I can't help but laugh at Grampa getting an aftermarket head unit for his birthday!! That's awesome. You best be shopping for some subs for the 'ol man, he'll be pimpin'!

aight, so, now, the car is going to be mine in a few days, i want to get an iPod interface. the problem is, the car isn't at my house so i cant just walk outside and pry the dash off, but i need to know what kind of aux input this headunit has. i've been getting mixed info for the internet on the different types of inputs this HU has. would the JVC J-Link adapter work with it? or can i get the KS-PD100 to work with my HU?
thanks

I had one of these units on my old 86 celica!
Its my favorite head unit as far as the visual aspect goes. Sadly it doesnt sound spectacular compared to some of the newer head units but i ran it with a par of sub's for a long time and it sounded good with the crappy 2" speakers that i had in my celica!! it still sounds better than the new sony explode stuff!!!! I would have kept it forever but sadly it crapped out. one day i was crusin down the road and it just cranked the volume to 100 percent and wouldnt move at all.....let me tell you...with a pair of sub's in a tiny little car....that was painfull in a real hurry. had to pull the fuse for it to drive it home!

sonys stuff is actually still pretty good imo. but only when you get to the 400+$ stuff.. and only head units lol i have a sony hu now that is a few years old and still kicks some pretty good ***
im unimpressed with all of their other equipment.. all of their entry level stuff and even some mid-level is just really sub par for the price.. sony has really let me down in the car scene.. oh well :P i like my sony hu alot even thought its a few years old now, but it was an arm and a leg to get the features i wanted! if i had it to do over i woulda went another route, but all in all im still a sony fan for hu's (but only the high end ones).

personaly after having audiobahn 12s for years and installing other audiobahn subs. i would go another route. i mean i like my subs but i had to cram them into .8 cf sealed enclosures to get ANY sq out of them. i mean they were really all over the place. also they were SOOO power hungry. i had a ton of amps that slamed other subs then i bought 2 12 audio excursion series and they wanted 550rms EACH.. i hooked up a 350x2 and they didnt move well at all, i had to hook up a 1400rms monoblock to actually get them to slam! (and i was not ready to spend the 250 on an amp at the time!).
i would get something that sounds a bit better if i could do it over. When i get the cash im getting Bostons.. but im just warning ya if you go audiobahn they will give you the bump.. but over time you will be disapointed with the quality of the sound.. Unless of course you just want the spl.. then there are still other choices.. but be my guest, casue my subs are good n loud :D (thats just not what i want)

sweet, thanks for the advice. as for subs, i want something that has good sound, but then when i wanna crank up the volume, they are gonna PUNCH! thats why i wanna get a Lanzar "VIBE" 2-Channel Amplifier with the little colume control knob.
P.S.- are MTX subs any good?
almost any sub can be made to win awards.. there was a dood with a PYRAMID system that took home a sq award.. how.. maticulous setup. days, weeks of setup and perfection... thats not what anyone wants to do! lol - if you want a good sub that will play well in a prefab box make a few decisions.. all quality, all bump, or a mix. then choose ported or sealed. sealed is a tigher sound and causes subs to hit faster, but it also steals some of the pressure. where with ported you can slam much louder, but for quality you should get a smaller sub that moves quicker, because a larger sub wont give you a much quality and speed (especailly if you listen to metal or rock with drum solos and such).
also remember that the top lines of alot of lower end brands are pretty good. audiobahn has an immortal series that are much louder then their standard line, they also have aluminum subs that have better sq.. but if you want somethign thats more rounded and has awesome volume and sq and is mainstream i really just recommend a type R. i mean you can get them cheap and from anywhere.
if you want to be more of a standout, then you can move to the big boys and look at diamond, bostons, elemental etc. those are just some examples there a TON of sub makers out there.
other then some generalizations and some simple dos and donts no one can really recommend a sub thats exactly what someone else is looking for, everyone hears sound differently and wants / likes different things.. so go around and listen to anything you can in stores and see what you like and work off of that. as for a recommend im not big on mtx or rockford due to bad experiences in the past. If you are looking for some bump with good sound quality and it doens need to be that loud i can recommend a alpine S type or a infinity reference. those are good, but i consider those more of "starter" systems casue they just make you want more.. but if some is enough, then your good. - if you plan on upgrading and all this then just start big and get a type R or something similiar. Also read revies on subs here are some good places to start, also dont foget expensive places like crutchfield and such still have good reviews, so you can read the reviews and compare specs.. then just price shop elsewhere!
here are some good places to start:
www.crutchfield.com
www.millionbuy.com
www.sonicelectronix.com
www.sounddomain.com
sift through and see what reviewers rave about.. when it comes time to buy i think sonic and millionbuy have some of the better prices on the web.
Also dont forget about froogle.com, or even pricegrabber.com for that matter. there all good resources!

JBL subs. Mine rock and I've got a kenwood 960 peak amp (500 RMS). 500 RMS powering 2 12" dual voice coil subs is pretty economical use of power I think. They rock hard.
^ good point!
i think any setup i ever build will be either 1 or 2 dvc subs at 2 or 1ohm respective. after running about 4 diff setups i think monoblocks and dvc is the best way to go with just about anything, im prolly never going back to 2 channel and svc subs.
so thats hands down my recommend for the basics, just make sure you get a good amp and keep track of the wattage the subs need!
