the center console slides out by pulling it up and back. oh and is 1 piece. I had to put the car into the low gear to get it up and off.

the front tray piece separates by screws on the bottom. at least, in my '04, and it looks the same.

Yes they seperate. Take off the entire piece. Should be 4-6 screws, slide the seats up and back if you can't find them all. For an auto you'll have to take off the shift knob too, don't lose the spring that is in it. And then turn the entire piece over and you'll see the clips/tabs that hold the black upper piece in place.

No you don't. Undo the 6 screws (3 on each side of the console)
Pull the ebrake all the way up.
Slide the console up until you can get your hand in between the shifter and the surround (where you lifted up)
Pull and the clips will come out.
And then the rest of the console will spread a little and will slide right off.!

every elantra has a 2 piece center console from 01-current.
the best thing to do is to go w/ keyan's suggestion and remove it all as 1 piece, then seperate the two for painting, makes it a lot easier that way.
if you had a manual, you could just remove the top piece if you wanted to.

i'm confused as to what is 2 pieces, when we pulled my center console up and out it was 1 piece. is he talking about seperating the gray and black pieces on the center console?

He is talking about the pieces seen in the picture. There is the black upper part which comes apart from the bottom gray (or tan) part.
I remember needing to take off the shift knob, but I guess not.

You don't have to remove the shift knob. I'm about to re-paint my interior. Before and after pics will be up when I'm done.

No biggie guys, I actually have to take the shifter knob off anyway because I am making a custom boot for it. I was just curious if it was possible to take off the black part only without removing the whole console. Its no biggie either way.

The way I normally get my top (black part) piece off is to remove the screws from the sides of the lower piece. Then I can pull that piece down while pulling the top piece up, and they pop apart.
