View Full Version : What do you say when someone goes "A HYUNDAI?!?"

So im just curious what everyone says when you go to some kind of social gathering like a party or wedding or somethin and then you end up talking to a guy about modding cars and stereos and what not, and then he asks you what kind of car ur modding and then you go "Hyundai Elantra" and he goes "WTF? a hyundAI?"

I usually just go, i love them cars, easy as crap to work on. I dont do too much of the performance and add-ons and all that but i a lot of people on here do. It's like as soon as i say hyundai people are like isnt that thing breakin down or impossible to fix up or whatever. Personally i think the elantra is a real good car reliability-wise. Im not a big hyundai fan myself, bur i think 2 of the cars they DID get right were the elantras and the tibs.

I point out little things about the Elantra that most people won't notice and compare it to their car.

For example:

The window switches are placed at exactly the right spot for most people. The arm rest allows your arm to rest in a natural position and the window switches are right at your finger tip. To have the window go down, you press down..up, you pull it up. Radio buttons and HVAC buttons are placed perfectly for the driver or passenger to use. I could go on and on.

You wouldn't believe how difficult this process can be on some cars, specifically Saabs. On Saabs, you have to do this reach-around method with your RIGHT arm (aka your shifting arm), and if you're lucky enough to find the switches, it's all backwards. You try to open the windows, and the moonroof opens. Then you find the right window switch and you press down, and the window goes up. And the armrest on the Saab's center console is useless. You put your arm down and the whole arm rest keeps sliding all the way back, spilling your drink. And this is a car that costs 2-4x as much as my Korean POS that everyone loves to bag on? Anytime they want to start bashing Hyundai, I can easily defend my position and explain why my car is better than what most people think. And most of them shuts up because they can't defend their car as well as I do with mine.

It's little details like that that makes me truly appreciate the Hyundai Elantra XD. It's one of the most ergonomical cars I've been in.

Thats what im saying that car is incredibly user friendly but still simple. I detail cars at a car detail place and sometime i cant even find the unlock button on foreign cars, but hyundai you know exactly where everything is. I think the elantra is the perfect everyday driver car. You got cupholders, power everything, lots of gadgets (sunglass holder, ash tray, etc), good on gas, and not to mention how easy an elantra is to work on. I mean you open the hood of an elantra and everything is right there in front of you and visible. I have a porsche 928 that ive been restoring and let me tell you, if a mechanical part on that car takes 4-5 peices, the hyundai counterpart will be 1-2. For example the clutch on my 928 was one of the most annoying, difficult things to replace, the thing had like 6 peices and cost a grand.

My fav thing about the elantra is the fact that i can wire up an entire system in it in about 20minutes if i move fast. That trunk is the perfect size and all.

Maybe the best thing is that it costs less than the competition, breaks down less than the competition, has cheaper parts if something goes bust AND it's easy to mod out. Back here Elantra's aren't that popular, in my town there's maybe 5 of them... Most people have WV Golf or something like that... They cost the same, Elantra has more space, it's easier for DIY work, parts cost less, you get a bigger car, nicer car, AND you'll be noticed (well, there still are only 5 of them here).

everyone pretty much said all I had, except one, it is amazingly easy to work on compared to my other car. Dodge avenger v6, i can't even change the spark plugs without taking the IM off. I wish I had an engine shot right now so everyone could see the cluster**** that is my dodge engine bay.

edit: found one. check out this...

it annoys the hell out of me when people talk crap about my car based on the fact its a hyundai, but what can you do? People are just ignorant. I was very weary of getting a hyundai based on reliability and overall looks of the cars but the xd was one that caught my eye. It was silver with black trim and a dark leather interior for $14k out the door... what else could you ask for. I went to nissan and honda before going to hyundai and i couldn't get a bonestock civic or a decent sentra for that price. Never had a breakdown, after 56k miles still runs like new.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd be tempted to respond with a crack about their ignorance, intellect and maybe even their breeding (or inbreeding as the case may be). :)

Rationalizing your choice in automobiles only encourages people like that. Next time say something like "I got this, this, this and this, a good looking, reliable, fun to drive car and even after taxes I had enough for 20 trips to my favorite hooker." "How about you?"

I say "wanna race?". 9 times out of 10 they shut up. the one time they dont, we race (track approved, of course). if i win, they shut up. if i lose, its not by much and i get compliments.

most of the people i meet are pretty cool about my car. when i first met katie (chick with rsx-s) she used to laugh and say its a family car its not quick. she shut up now since i beat her at the track. the only other people to say **** about my car were big honda guys but those are only the ignorant ones anyway. i mean hardly no one on CC says **** about my car. its only the closed minded ones. they say they may not like the car but they don't diss it. other than that everyone else is impressed with what i've done.

I start spitting out the figures that no-one can beat: warranty, price, quality ratings (now ahead of Toyota and Honda), and the fact that 'everyone has a civic, I don't want to assimilate'.

I saw an Elantra at the track the last time I went and it ran 17's. I dont know what was under the hood and it was lowered.
Are RSX's that slow that they get beat by 17 second cars?

My car is quick and probably the fastest car Ive owned but its no race car. It gets up and goes quite nicely though.

My Elantra isnt souped up or anything, so when some one with a honda trys to talk smack i usually tell him ill be back in a minute and come back with a super charged porsche 928 and completely destroy them.

One of my friends has a dodge srt-4 and hes put a crapload of money into his car for parts. The car is probably worth like 35k. He went to the track with me and said my porsche had nothing on any of these new cars so we raced and he got murdered, i beat him on the 1/4 mile by at least 40ft.

I know of an srt-4 around here you'll have issues with...510whp, runs LOW 11s all day long.

It doesn't bother me at all when people trash talk Hyundai. It just shows me how uninformed they are. Sometimes I try to inform them (#3 in JD Powers IQS, #1 non-luxury brand, etc.)

If someone says their Honduh or whatever is better, I just say, "Good for you. But I'm perfectly happy with my Hyundai, thanks." You gotta understand that if they're a strong advocate for a brand, you're not going to convince them. A lot of car preference is emotional and a rational argument won't get you anywhere, so don't even bother. (Part of my fondness for my Elantra is emotional and I'm the first one to admit it. I just *like* the way the car looks.)

I always get that one stupid a** person that ask me if i cut the springs and the other really stupid question "is that just a muffler on your car?" to which i reply no look at the pipe going all the way forward duh duh.Anyway usually i have some pics of the cam, piston and rob swap me and my friends did and ther other mods on my phone and they still talk some trash. most people laugh and bash me like "You put money into a Hyundai?!" Then they see what it looks like with 5x's less than what the've spent to mod thier cars. I always say what I lack in $ I make up with Time cuz everything is DIY. This car is so easy to mod and you don't see them modded that often so it makes it even more special. And alot of times people don't even know WTF im driving, I got pulled over recently and the cop was like "What year honda civc is this?" and im say "Its a Hyundai!" like i was offended then he gave me a compliment on my car and gave me my ticket.

when people say I have a hyundai I just race em and beat em cause its easy to mod this car and the car is actually fast at take offs just when you get in the higher gears it tends to die off.

cars I've beat VW Jetta GL, Ford Escort with body kit, 00 Eclipse GTV6 automatic, tons of honda ex's

that's the main thing with elantras... it has the low end power stock, but once you get up into 4th and 5th gears (mt) then it dies off.

the last gear on all cars is the "cruiser" gear where it helps with gas mileage... so not much power there anyways... if you really want to get someone from a rolling start and you are in 5th, drop it into 3rd, and floor it as soon as you start to let off the clutch... the car will hiccup for a second, then take off... then you can shift into 4th and still be accelerating. though thats not good for the clutch.

I tell them it cost a few thousand less than their Honda Civic, I got it brand new, it has a much nicer warranty, it probably had more standard features. And if I get that well it's gonna fall apart arguement I just tell them I have 80,000+ miles on it and I've had a small problem with the clutch and that's all.

Oh and for the little punks with the "pimped out" civics I tell them I have 20 more horses under the hood, stock. :D

I love my car and I'm not afraid to show it.
