View Full Version : How high do you go to shift?

How high do you go before cringing when you shift gears? I forget what the redline is, like 6 or 6 and a half, but if you're running the car hard, how far do you go before you start cringing and shift? Like, what's the max you'd run it, so to speak?
I cut loose in my Elantra today for the first time (had it 2 weeks now). It did remarkably well, and surprised me. Sounded good when it was revving up pretty high, and I was pleased with the performance.

6 and 3/4 is where the cut off hits on my tach. it could be a bit off though

6 and a half is where it actually is redlining. 6200 is about where the fuel cutoff is in my car. when having fun i take it up as close to there as i can before the cutoff then shift.

So I guess I'm thinking like a grandma if I don't want to run my engine past 4.5/5 at all? That's how I drove it earlier when I kinda "cut loose."

ah. i don't usually hit it that high tho. only when racing or testing otu new mods for the most part.

Yeah, same here. When I drive normally I'll shift at like 3... sometimes a little lower if I'm going on a steady flat-land cruise. But like I said, I was just running the car hard for the first time today and figured I'd keep it relatively low. My Pontiac I just got rid of had an orange zone from 5-6 and red from 6 up. So Id go to 4 max on that... so going to 4 on this car, even though it's a different vehicle, is kinda like... ehh. I'm still too used to the Pontiac I guess.

I ran mine out last night on the way home from work. I shifted at about 6100-6200. I was only able to do that though for 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd because I was coming up on a car. Normally I shift around 2700-2800 rpms.

Normally I shift at 3,500, but when trying to get the max out of my car, I don't shift until 6,000.

Just listen for the sweet music of the fuel cut singing through the magnaflo exhuast! You aren't trying hard enough until you hear WHAAAAAAAAAA.....BRAP-BRAP-BRAP.....WHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! LOL

fuel cutoff, I never hit there, but I go really really close...but now I like to drive more conservative like, so I cruise around 3500 so I am right in the sweet spot for good punches.

There is no point in shifting before 3k. The engine is gutless before that point. I usually shift between 4 and 5 k. 6.2 when I have some open road. It's not economical, but it's a hell of a lot more fun. :)

doubtful. even with racing around friday night, doing pulls on the highway the whole way down to OC and the like i managed 30mpg with 3 people in the car and lots of luggage in the trunk

The exd has a redline of 6600 rpms... I know for a fact that the tach is off by a few rpms and it varies from car to car...
My tach is off, and each gear yields a different fuel cut reading but I know that it is still 6600 rpms...
Also, on the dyno it shows a more accurate max rpm and it is also 6600 rpms. =)
As far as shift points... there is no reason to shift at redline unless you are drag racing the car...
If you are trying to get maximum fuel economy, then shift at or below 2000 rpms in every gear. Doing that, I can get 430 mpt easily.

i usually redline it on a daily basis (getting on the highway) and 6200- 6400 is the sweet spot for shifting...because you are usaully just above the 4k mark...except for that treaded 1st to 2nd where it drops down to like 3500 < i think thats the part that kills us...

i feel ya on that. our second gear isn't close enough to 1st.

if 2nd was close like the others and then we had a 6th gear....our cars would be pretty quick!

Too bad Elantra doesn't have 6 gear trans... Hopefully someone will eventually try and modify it (make a new, custom transmision)

for the longest time there was a 6spd beta tranny...but we never physcially found one...i still wonder about the GT v6...i bet somebody could just make a new plate (to connect the tranny to the engine...because they are obviously different patterns).
the ratios on the gt v6 are pretty nice and would go well with the beta.

they have a 6spd 2.0 over in korea

yeah but nobody has been able to get a hold of one...
dude for 4 hundred bucks...i would definetly be in for one...(although i know it would be more like 1000 with shipping and all)...but still i think this would be well worth it.
i wonder what the 0-60 or 0-100kms would be with that tranny...i would imagine atleast into the low 7's

Easy Acceleration (best economy)
^ to 2nd @ 3,000
^ to 3rd @ 3,000
^ to 4th @ 2,750
^ to 5th @ 2,750
Hard Acceleration (most power)
^ to 2nd @ 6,250
^ to 3rd @ 6,250
^ to 4th, 5th- varies depending on the legal speed and how far I want to exceed it.
My hardest run so far was Leaving a rest area on west I-4 and redline shifting from 1st through 4th gear which got me up to 110MPH and then I had to back off, or run over the 70 mph traffic.

it doesnt even matter if you go passed 6000 or not because thats when the max horsepower is at, so actually if you go passed 6000 its making you slower...

4-5K Normally in 1-2-3 then drop to 5th. 2nd and 3rd are great pullers for merging onto the highway so I usually wind them up a little getting on and off the highway. Even with the fairly aggressive shifting I knock down 30-32mpg weekly. Wife got 34 for a couple of weeks.
economy: 2000-2500.. yes i know its extremely slow
racing: 6000-6200

yeah that's great and all but the cars behind would want to run my *** over. these care are REDICULOUSLY slow at low rpms. it seems like it takes 2000rpms just to get the darn car moving

you are correct but to hit the sweet spot in the rpm range you must go a little further so the next gear will be right where you want it to be... ;) except for that treaded 2nd gear... :(
